Even in Nov month, still had 5 good dives at Tenggol Island lead by the friendly, experienced DM, Robin. Visibility was good except for one dive at Tokong Timur. Visited the same dive site on day two although would have preferred a new site but that may have been due to bad weather conditions. Otherwise found dive sites at Tenggol generally better as compared to those in Perhentian, Redang or Tioman. As they were deeper and better visibility even in the month of Nov. I was told it would be even better n the best time to dive between Mar-Apr.

This was my second trip to Tenggol and the resort has added some new accommodation blocks and common amenities to make the stay more comfortable. I recognised some of the staff and management from my trip 6 yrs ago and the great personal treatment you receive from them still hasn't changed. If you want to leave it all behind on the mainland for a few days of great diving then this is the only place on to be off peninsular Malaysia.

We were there in September 2013 and we are surprise to see whale shark in Tenggol. According to the dive master, the last visit was 2 years ago,

The resort has all the basic facilities to get thru the day. However, power supply is only from night time to the morning. Mobile service is very limited to 1 or 2 bar signal.

Overall, the diving was great and we was so lucky to see the return of the Whale Shark in Tenggol.

Room Tip: Basically, all the rooms are the same.

It was a great 5 dive trips with this resort. The RDM was friendly and gave few good advices and recommendation before dives. 1 thing to note. The electricity is only applicable from 6pm to 10am everyday. Quite cool!

Strip away all the fancy pretentious decor of a 5 star hotel but keep the great customer service of the 5 star hotel and you have Tenggol Island Beach Resort. This place is considered a heaven for divers with pristine clear waters, a white sandy beach and no small children in sight. This resort has all the basic necessities you'll need to have a great dive holiday because all you need as a diver is:

1. A great dive master (Go Robin Go!)
2. Good food (Even better than most 5 star establishments)
3. A bed to sleep in between dives.

Tenggol Island Beach Resort has all of the above checked and more.

This resort even helps with the turtle conservation programme whereby they protect the eggs and keep the newly hatched turtles safe from human and animal predators alike and are released when the coast is clear. I've had the privilege to set free a few newly hatched turtles myself and swam with them into the sea. Great experience!

Many thanks to Robin and Paul for their great hospitality and I'll definitely be back.

Date of stay: 31.5.2013 - 2.6.2013
Stayed with: sister
Purpose of stay: Scuba Diving (5 fun dives)

The resort...well I wouldnt call it a resort, rather a chalet due to the basic amenities provided. The place is really nice and well equipped with the help of nature to sooth the surrounding temperature. As the rest of the reviews had said, this place is strictly for Divers. I would definitely come back but probably not as a mere fun diver, but a divemaster to help the operator run some fun dives. Anyway the pros and cons of the place are as follows:-

the surrounding environment
- the place was cooling notwithstanding the bright sun as the island was mostly shaded with tall and bushy treetops
- the distance between the shore and the was extremely short hence you will be less tired to and fro your rooms
- the island wasnt filled with rocks and stones (in comparison to tulamben in Bali). So walking on the beach with your dive gears on wont be too much of a hassle

the resort/chalet
- all the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. they will address any of your concerns even if that means they have to climb those rocky paths to clear your room off insects.
- the food prepared for guests are above average quality and they never ran out of food anyways. for snacks, you get the usual suspects including Milo, Nescafe, sugar and condensed milk. you will also get bread and the spreads for snacks.
- the staff carried our luggage to the boat upon leaving the island. that was good.

the rooms
- the rooms are well, basic. we stayed those on the upper part of the island so my review may not apply to the rooms behind the common area which were situated on the lower level. basic here means, you get what you need namely:-
a. twin prince sized beds with cheap mattress and thin duvet
b. airconditioner
c. water heater (surprising)
d. a place to hook dry clothing (indoor) and a clothing line to hang wet clothing (outdoor)
e. a working ceiling fan
f. two working ceiling lamps both in the room and toilet respectively
g. functioning toilet and high velocity water faucets
h. mosquito coil

dive center
- the main dive center on the island is Discovery Divers which was managed by En. Zolkefli or Zul for short. the DC was brilliant and they know their stuff too. all trips are accompanied by a qualified instructor together with a divemaster or divemaster-in-training to ensure the dives are safe and smooth.
- there were enough tanks to ensure 40-50 divers can have fun throughout the day and they immediately refill the tanks at the compressor shack after every dive.
- the dive equipments are all above average. you get what you need and paid for. some are of better quality than those DCs in commercial areas such as perhentian or mabul too.
- the boat...can be uncomfortable during dives given the state of waters we were in during our stay. however the boatmen were friendly and really helpful.

- the boat was uncomfortable on choppy waters.
- the tank hole in the boat was too tight. extra effort is needed to get the tank out of the hole.
- there were INSECTS all around (we had a chicada in our room disturbing our sleep and the ants were HUGE). however, its a jungle so i would just like to point this out.
- the electricity is only available between 630pm-840am. its not really a con but hey, i wouldnt wanna put this in the pros.
- the staff didnt have a lighter / match to lit the mosquito coil in our room

so thats about it. i hope other travellers will find my review helpful. if you have not a place to dive in the peninsular malaysia, tenggol is a must visit. Its unspoilt, beautiful and definitely no tourists.

Tenggol island is almost unknown to Malaysians, unless you are a diver. That's a good thing, because that makes Tenggol island preserved and unspoilt by hoards of tourists.

And that is exactly what Tenggol Island Beach Resort is doing. It is catering for divers, and true lovers of nature. Accommodation here is quite basic. There are wooden chalets, each sleeping up to 4 people, and each with its own balcony. The chalets are just metres from the beach. The bathrooms are also basic but with hot water supply. Although the rooms are airconditioned, electricity supply is via a generator and only runs between 6pm to 10am. Between 10am to 6pm, it is assumed that you'll be out scuba diving or lying on the beach.

I brought my children along, and although they enjoyed many hours playing by the beach, the afternoons were quite unbearable for them when they wanted to nap in the rooms without airconditioning or a fan. It was also difficult if they needed to use the toilet during this time as you cant switch on the light in the toilet.

Food is served 3 times a day - breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food is mainly local, chinese style cooking, which was quite tasty. Food was always just enough.....I think they could do with cooking a bit more for the ravenous appetites of scuba divers. Bread, tea and coffee was on free flow at all times, but after awhile, bread gets boring and i found myself wishing for some biscuits to snack on in between meals. Also, you only get a cold drink during meals.

The beach was lovely.........white sands, crystal clear waters. But mainly dead coral. Diving was excellent where there was still a lot of corals, fish and macro marine life. The dive centre seems to cater for more seasoned divers......there wasnt enough dive equipment to go around (there were about 24 divers around including us) as if expecting that everyone would have their own equipment.

There's limited mobile phone service on the island, and 3G is very patchy its more or less non existent. But that's an advantage if you want to get away from it all!

Staff were friendly and helpful.

All in all I'd say Tenggol Island resort is great for the diver, great for the sun worshipper, but not so great for children. If you do decide to take the kids along, I'd suggest bringing the following - lots of snacks, some mats so they can nap on the beach under the trees (which is a lot cooler than the non-airconditioned rooms) and beach toys.
