“Gorgeous understated resort”
Reviewed December 9, 2010

We stayed here in May of this year, and it was lovely. Attentive staff, gorgeous surroundings and brilliant selection of food.
The accommodation was simple, but lovely, with coral huts and having only 40 huts on the island meant you virtually had your own private beach area in front of your hut.
We heard they're planning to redevelop the island and add water huts etc. which would be a disappointment, and lose the charm of the island, but economics probably win over.
The house reef was a boat ride away from the island (free) but lovely, good selection of coral and marine life (turtles, rays etc. too), unfortunately all the coral right next to the island has died, but it leaves gorgeous sands, and a protected area for baby reef sharks and rays to swim about in the water.

We spent one week during Novembre 2010 on the Island. This is a quite small island with 40 bungalows. Despites not many activities at night and expensives excursions (if not in all inclusive), the island is a paradise. Each bungalows has its own beach and terrasse. My trees and vegatations give shade which is perfect with high temperature. Rooms are cleaned several times during the day, the food is excellent and the staff extremely friendly.
If you are looking for the quitness it's perfect. If you like parting this is not a good place to stay! make your choice !

We have just returned from 2 weeks on Gasfinolhu and are still congratulating ourselves for having found this fabulous place.
The island is small but still manages to seem deserted at times. The food variety, quality, and quantity was magnificent.
The service was friendly and staff were wonderful we must mention the fabulous 3 bar boys and the waiters.. The watersports section was all you could wish for and the dive school, Ocean Pro was excellent thanks to Tom Barbara and Sameer.
The island experience was like a very large family holiday made up of many nationalities having a good time together, a big thank you to the party of Russians who kept us all entertained.
It is now difficult to find a real Maldive island if you are not into water bungalows and want to see the wildlife. (thanks Thomson's) So a big plea to the owners update the bungalows but keep the integrity of Gas .....we dont all want a Meeru!!
Recommend you go before they change it, hopefully they will not!

Just back from two glorious weeks on Gas. Description accurate to most reviews, rooms tired, food & staff fantastic. During our time we stayed in room 36, on the west side of the island which was windy, although we were grateful for this as second week in room 1 where it was almost too hot to spend time out in the sun.

Snorkelling around the island itself is not the best as it is too shallow although worth spending time around the groynes- we found moray eels and lobsters hiding out in these as well as lion fish under the wooden jetty. However, there was a boat trip out twice a day, to the house reef on the west of the island, or if it was too rough to outside of the atoll on the east side if the island. The boat trips were great, the east side provided opportunity to swim with mantas, reef sharks and turtles with sting rays and moray eels also present. The house reef had some decent coral and a wide variety of fish, my favourites included the unicorn fish and oriental sweetlips amongst others.

Must also give a mention to "George" the heron who my wife took a shine to. Very friendly and loved having his photo taken!

Sunset cruise was good as was trip to local island. Latter provided opportunity to buy souvenirs much cheaper than the shop on the island.

As Gas was over booked we volunteered to spend two days on Meeru - a complete but lovely contrast as we stayed in a JWV. Beautiful accommodation and Meeru had loads of facilities, tennis, golf and swimming pools amongst them but Gas has a charm and friendliness that Meeru couldn't match. Snorkelling was decent around Meeru and the JWV provided a night time viewing opportunity with both sting ray and sharks passing by your feet standing on the steps down to the water.

To sum up, Gas is a small friendly island with minimal facilities but great charm and friendliness. Food & service was excellent.

Only downside we heard about, which didn't affect us, but did a couple of others, was that they suffered bites from bed bugs.

Gasfinolhu is a lovely little island with only 40 bungalows, a restaurant and bar. All rooms and meal plans are the same (beach bungalow, all inclusive) which makes for a very homey atmosphere where you feel as if you are a guest at someone's house.
Bungalows, as has been said, are tired. The bedroom is actually quite ok whereas the bathroom is in rather poor condition. The renovations planned for next year are needed but time will tell if there go overboard (water bungalows, several different room categories etc. as is the case with their bigger sister Meeru).
All inclusive (which we rarely take) exceeded our expectations. Food quality and variety were excellent. My one complaint would be that there wasn't much Maldivian fare and the curries were extremely mild. Desserts on the other hand were fabulous. With the all inclusive you can have beer (Carlsberg or Tiger) and red, white or rosé wine as well as basic cocktails with gin, vodka etc. The red and white were both good whereas the rosé was too sweet for my taste. Overall the AI was excellent.
The island is very natural and extremely small. Almost every bungalow has some beach in front and ours even had a hammock. Unfortunately the water is extremely shallow (even at high tide) so swimming is virtually impossible. The resort organizes snorkel trips daily which are good but that doesn't help you to cool off during the rest of the day.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Gasfinolhu and would consider returning - as long as the changes being made next year do not take away from its Maldivian charm.

The rooms need tottaly renewere. The island was separated in two parts. One side is the resort and the other side where we can´t go is where the employes live. The resort is very quiet very good for a relaxing holidays. The resort only have 40 rooms for that reason there are not many people, so we have privacy. The colours of the sea are wonderfull with many wild live. We recommend not to loose the snoorkeling and in our opinion the execursion to Male it´s a loose of time. To expensive and the guide to bad. The guide take us to a bar for drink a juice (7.50 USD) e loose a lot off time in that bar and in the end of the execursion we stay in the port more or less one hour. In that day we expect to arrive in the hotel for lanche but when we arrived the restaurante was close because the boat must go to the airport take a customer. We think that this excursion can be better.
The spa is excelent. The thai woman have a gold hands. Don´t lose a massage. We did two.
The restaurant is good. the food have to much spice and papper, we feel the influence of India cuisine.
An excelent place. We´d loved.

Spent 2 weeks here and the island is superb. We picked the island because it was untouched compared to other islands. We did not want a pool or watervillas, the island is simple and so relaxing. Yes the bungalows do need updating but we knew this before we went and they are fine, you won't spend much time in there anyway!. Staff are fantastic, friendly but not overbearing. The food is superb, different and varied and far to much! breakfast has everything you could need, cereal, pastries, hot food and curry. The sand is white and the water is turquise. snorkling is twice a day and brilliant, saw dolphins and a mantaray. Just go before they ruin it!!
