My wife and I have just returned from a week at Coco Palm Bodu Hithi for our honeymoon and it was everything we could have hoped for and more. This is a world class hotel and we received a world class experience.
Like may other reviewers on this website I would highly recommend contacting Jim Forrest at Maldives Direct. Jim provides a very personal service and knows the Maldivian resorts like no other travel agent I've come across. No other agent could match their prices either.
We booked 7 nights on a half board basis and wanted to experience both types of accommodation - the beach villa and the water villas. At Jim's recommendation we booked 5 nights in a beach villa and 2 nights in an Escape Water Villa (free upgrade from 'standard' water villa).
The experience began with a personal greeting at Male airport from a Coco Palm representative. We were presented with cold towels and cold bottled water which was very welcome in the heat. We were then taken straight to our speedboat for the 40 minute transfer to the island. Upon arrival, the resort manager Mario was there to welcome us. So far so good.
Check-in was also handled very swiftly and we were then taken to our island villa and our luggage arrived soon after. We were in villa 324 which is definitely on the best side of the island. Jim at Maldives Direct requested a villa between numbers 324 and 333 in our booking and so were very pleased to find we had one of the best located villas. The Island Villas really are stunning. The private pool and courtyard offers total privacy with lush vegetation and plenty of shade on the decked area. The bed is huge and is very comfy. The massive round bathtub in the middle of the room is also a very cool touch. The beach is beautiful and has some amazing coral reefs and loads of fish. The snorkelling is fantastic and the equipment hire is free.
After our 5th night we checked out of the Island Villa and found out that we'd been upgraded to the Club Coco Villas for our last 2 nights. Again the accommodation is truly superb with a large private infinity pool on the deck, steps down to the tropical reef, day bed and sun lounges.
To be honest I preferred the Island Villa to the water villa experience. The island villas offer total privacy in their courtyards whereas you feel quite exposed in the water villas even though you rarely see anybody swimming past your villa. If you're thinking of just booking one type of accommodation I would definitely recommend the Island Villas. However it was a good experience to sample both.
The food and service at Bodu Hithi are fantastic. We had lunch at the Latitude bar (very cool, great chillout music playing throughout the day) and then our half board basis provided dinner at the Air buffet with a $120 meal credit if we wished to eat elsewhere. A fantastic choice of food is available here. One gripe we had was that water is chargeable ($10 for a litre bottle of Evian) whereas at breakfast water is free. We definitely think that water should be free with every meal considering how hot the temperatures can get.
As part of our honeymoon package we also received a free meal at the Aqua restaurant. Again, exemplary food and service with our own personalised menu. We also had the beach BBQ which was very expensive and we were rather overfaced with the amount of food. They should have the price ($150 each) and half the amount of food served in our opinion.
On our last night we tried the Tsuki Japanese restaurant. It was 'ok', nothing more. The menu selection is pretty poor with no noodle dishes on offer. Plenty of sushi to choose from and it was of a high standard it has to be said. There is very little ambience however. It's tucked away above the Stars restaurant and definitely seems like an after-thought by the resort designers. Our meal with drinks came to $145 so with our $120 meal credit this came to just $25 which was fine by us.
Other treats were a free sunset cruise around the island with sparkling wine, canapes and chocolates. This was a very nice touch indeed. Jobyn, our waiter, did a superb job here. There was also a beach bonfire with live band and an open air cinema under the stars with free popcorn and waitress service. Amazing experiences all round.
Overall we had an incredible honeymoon with memories that will last a lifetime. We would definitely recommend Coco Palm Bodu Hithi. Everything is geared towards honeymooners and they certainly know how to do it right.
