Beautiful place but poor service and average food

Review of Coco Bodu Hithi
2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed May 18, 2011
Pros and cons for this resort:

Pros: Beautiful beach and villas which were kept clean and tidy twice a day.

Cons:
- Service is poor at the main Air restaurant. E.g. we were given the bill half way through our buffet meal without asking for it! Waiters look miserable in this restaurant. In the end we decided never to eat there again and ate at the Tsuki (Japanese) and Aqua restaurants which have a completely different class of service, but you have to pay more for and practically beg to get a reservation for! Tip: If reception tell you they are fuly booked, just go to the restaurant itself and check direct since they can fit you into a later slot.
Aqua has the best food and service with waiters which have been trained properly for etiquette.
- Dress code in a buffet restaurant. Ignore this since nobody sticks to it anyway.
- Warning there is a feeling of 2nd class citizen if not staying in the 'Club' villas.

My wife and I have just returned from a week at Coco Palm Bodu Hithi for our honeymoon and it was everything we could have hoped for and more. This is a world class hotel and we received a world class experience.

Like may other reviewers on this website I would highly recommend contacting Jim Forrest at Maldives Direct. Jim provides a very personal service and knows the Maldivian resorts like no other travel agent I've come across. No other agent could match their prices either.

We booked 7 nights on a half board basis and wanted to experience both types of accommodation - the beach villa and the water villas. At Jim's recommendation we booked 5 nights in a beach villa and 2 nights in an Escape Water Villa (free upgrade from 'standard' water villa).

The experience began with a personal greeting at Male airport from a Coco Palm representative. We were presented with cold towels and cold bottled water which was very welcome in the heat. We were then taken straight to our speedboat for the 40 minute transfer to the island. Upon arrival, the resort manager Mario was there to welcome us. So far so good.

Check-in was also handled very swiftly and we were then taken to our island villa and our luggage arrived soon after. We were in villa 324 which is definitely on the best side of the island. Jim at Maldives Direct requested a villa between numbers 324 and 333 in our booking and so were very pleased to find we had one of the best located villas. The Island Villas really are stunning. The private pool and courtyard offers total privacy with lush vegetation and plenty of shade on the decked area. The bed is huge and is very comfy. The massive round bathtub in the middle of the room is also a very cool touch. The beach is beautiful and has some amazing coral reefs and loads of fish. The snorkelling is fantastic and the equipment hire is free.

After our 5th night we checked out of the Island Villa and found out that we'd been upgraded to the Club Coco Villas for our last 2 nights. Again the accommodation is truly superb with a large private infinity pool on the deck, steps down to the tropical reef, day bed and sun lounges.

To be honest I preferred the Island Villa to the water villa experience. The island villas offer total privacy in their courtyards whereas you feel quite exposed in the water villas even though you rarely see anybody swimming past your villa. If you're thinking of just booking one type of accommodation I would definitely recommend the Island Villas. However it was a good experience to sample both.

The food and service at Bodu Hithi are fantastic. We had lunch at the Latitude bar (very cool, great chillout music playing throughout the day) and then our half board basis provided dinner at the Air buffet with a $120 meal credit if we wished to eat elsewhere. A fantastic choice of food is available here. One gripe we had was that water is chargeable ($10 for a litre bottle of Evian) whereas at breakfast water is free. We definitely think that water should be free with every meal considering how hot the temperatures can get.

As part of our honeymoon package we also received a free meal at the Aqua restaurant. Again, exemplary food and service with our own personalised menu. We also had the beach BBQ which was very expensive and we were rather overfaced with the amount of food. They should have the price ($150 each) and half the amount of food served in our opinion.

On our last night we tried the Tsuki Japanese restaurant. It was 'ok', nothing more. The menu selection is pretty poor with no noodle dishes on offer. Plenty of sushi to choose from and it was of a high standard it has to be said. There is very little ambience however. It's tucked away above the Stars restaurant and definitely seems like an after-thought by the resort designers. Our meal with drinks came to $145 so with our $120 meal credit this came to just $25 which was fine by us.

Other treats were a free sunset cruise around the island with sparkling wine, canapes and chocolates. This was a very nice touch indeed. Jobyn, our waiter, did a superb job here. There was also a beach bonfire with live band and an open air cinema under the stars with free popcorn and waitress service. Amazing experiences all round.

Overall we had an incredible honeymoon with memories that will last a lifetime. We would definitely recommend Coco Palm Bodu Hithi. Everything is geared towards honeymooners and they certainly know how to do it right.

I spent a week with my husband at this hotel and it was the best resort I’ve ever been. The hotel is amazing, the staff it's very helpful, kind and polite, definitely worth the money and especially because they made us an upgrade for the Club Villas with a private pool and a butler (Asim). Our stay was perfect! They think about every detail especially our butler. The Villa is awesome and of course very clean. There is nothing better than wake up and jump to the sea and do snorkelling... We had dinner at all the restaurants they were very good especially “Aqua”. I can say that they made us feel unique (the resort was full and we didn’t notice). I highly recommend this hotel it has an excellent price/quality.

I Loved this hotel. Before going here I literally reviewed every single resort in the Maldives and went for this one. It was as great as we hoped. Absolutely loved it. So relaxing and felt a miles away from home, work, reality. We split our stay between two rooms: The Island rooms and the Water rooms. I could nto pick my favourite out of the two of these styles. When I entered the Island room I was blown away. It was stunning. It was huge and we loved our own pool. The Water bungalow was amazing being so close to the reef was fantastic. The food here was great also.
The only thing I have to say is that it was expensive. Which is to be expected in the Maldives though, esp for a hotel of this luxury. Go - you wont regret it.

Room tip: all rooms have to be amazing, it is stunning

Well where do I start, from arrival at the airport to our departure we were treated like royalty.

This hotel is one of the finest in the world, offering world class hospitality, with modern room set in an idyllic location in the indian ocean,

We booked a Club Coco Palm Water Villa, which is the best villas available on the island, After we landed we were met at the airport by our butler, who escorted us to the hotel speedboat for our transfer to Bodu Hithi. Once on the comfortable speed boat we were given cold towels and bottled water to refresh ourselves. The transfer took about 40 minutes. Upon arrival we were met by Mario the hotel General Manager and staff with more cold towels and lovely genuine welcome. We were whisked away on a buggy to the club section of the island where we were greeted by Mark, the Club manager and staff with Champagne. What an amazing arrival, we felt like royalty. Mark escorted us to our villa, where Mash-hood our amazing Butler gave us a foot massage before being shown around our villa.

The villa was fantastic, clean modern with everything you could thing of including a bottle of Champagne on ice!! The villa was huge, with a large lounge area with flat screen TV, Sound System, Nespresso Machine and a large mini bar!! The bedroom has Super Kingsize 4 poster bed with incredible views over the Indian Ocean. The bathroom has a double bath, 2 sinks, toilet, bidet, rainwater shower and an outdoor shower, The onto our Private deck where we had a stunning view, private infinity pool. sun loungers, day bed and table and chairs, theres even steps down into the Indian Ocean.

Later Mash-hood gave us a tour of the island via buggy!! Very nice and what a beautiful island. There are 4 restaurants to choose from. Air the main Buffet restaurant, Aqua, an A la Carte restaurant build over the ocean, Tsuki the Japanese restaurant and Stars the exclusive club restaurant. We ate in all restaurant but not Tsuki. All restaurants had amazing food but Stars was our favourite. The food was beautifully presented with mouth watering flavours, the staff could not do enough to help! The fillet steak was to die for!

There is also 2 bars, Latitude, the main bar by the infinity pool and Stars bar in the club. Both were excellent but again Stars bar was just that bit more special and exclusive, Joseph the bar man was particularly helpful and polite.

Overall we had an amazing experience, Champagne breakfast, sunset cruise, amazing massages in the Coco Spa, Sunset cocktails, all of which made for an brilliant Honeymoon

I feel I need to thank all the staff at Coco Palm Bodhu Hithi for making our Honeymoon so very very special. Especially, Mash-Hood, Joseph, Imran, Dudley, Wajeeh, Nishan and all the others that helped create paradise! Thank you all of you!

Mario - You have an amazing Team, Thank you

We stayed at this place after our wedding on Sept 2010. We had an amazing time from the moment we arrived. We stayed at one of the club coco villas, nice and big with an amazing view of the sea from the bed. The island had just the right amount of people. It's small, so it's easy to get about and very quiet. Ideal for a romantic getaway.

The food was top quality and in abundance. The staff were friendly and courteous. We are considering going here again for a holiday.
