“Cocoa Island - This place is incredible!”
Reviewed May 11, 2011

Cocoa Island lived up to all our dreams and more - everything about this place is amazing, even all the rave reviews on here couldn't have prepared us for how blown away we were going to be!

I had spent months researching all the islands, we wanted a small, beautiful island that had a private feel to it, that was discreetly luxurious with fantastic snorkeling...Cocoa exceeded our expectations on all of these requirements and more...

we arrived early in the morning at 8am, the speedboat was there waiting for us and it was just us and another couple going to Cocoa so we were on the boat and away within 10 mins of landing!

I was so excited as we arrived at Cocoa 40mins or so later, it was the stereotypical picture perfect paradise island, absolutely pristine and the sky a perfect blue with the sun high in the sky.
We were welcomed by Felix the resorts GM, given a chilled young coconut and an introduction to the island and its facilities, we then stopped by the dive school en route to our villa to pick up our snorkel gear.

Our Villa - we stayed in one of the over-water Dhoni Villas - it was extremely stylish, comfortable and luxurious in a classy and rustic way, nothing flashy/ott at all, bed was amazingly comfortable, soft quality linen - even the robes provided were gorgeous!
we had a lavazza coffee machine, as much bottled water as we wanted plus a different array of unusual tropical fruit daily.
The villa had its own private deck over the water, we spent so much time just lounging there in the afternoon and it was a great start to the day, having a coffee while watching the stingrays, baby sharks and fish swimming around below.
The steps of the villa lead down straight into the lagoon, and we discovered that the snorkeling straight ahead to the coral reef drop off incredible - the best time to go is first thing (we were going at 6.30am)
it was like being in a huge aquarium, we swam saw large turtles, a huge eagle ray, a moray eel plus on our last day 2 large white tip reef sharks! the drop off was a truly amazing place to see a huge array of underwater life...this was probably the best snorkeling i have experienced and I had very high expectations having snorkeled in the red sea, maldives and thai islands....

the island overall is stunning...it almost looks photo-shopped and unreal its so visually perfect

we really felt like we were the only ones on the island the entire time we were there, even though there were other couples there, we never saw anyone else when snorkeling and felt we had the beaches/pool area to ourselves...cocoa really manages to give you that secluded/private feel

we spent a lot of time chilling by the pool in the day, the pool area staff were so attentive and would bring chilled bottles of water within seconds of us settling on a lounge, they also brought refreshing aroma chilled face clothes and chilled fruit...all the little touches that just add to making everything as comfortable as possible

the food at cocoa is sublime - again we have very high expectations re food, but everything we had was fantastic and fresh - breakfast was full of fresh tropical fruits, home made breads/pastries, ultra-healthy cereals and home made yogurts and fruit compotes, plus the cooked menu offered everything from indulgent eggs benedict to traditional maldivan breakfasts or organic porridge...

although there is only the one restaurant, the menu is so varied that we never got bored and there was still many things i wanted to try...you could be uber-healthy and almost detox on the light, japanese influenced coco shambala menu, order something simple like pizza/burgers/paninis or go all out with the more gastro menu...

I loved sitting in the bar for drinks as the sunset, the cocktails were great!

one of the things that i was amazed at on cocoa was the absence of mosquitos - something that I was fully prepared for having being bitten badly everywhere I go, plus I read a lot of warnings on here re mossies and so came armed with the strongest deet repellent and anti-histimines... they simply were none on the island at all!
we later found out that the island actively 'fogs' at key times of day to get rid of any, and also ensure the sand/beaches are kept immaculately clean...this was a massive bonus for me who usually really suffers with mossies!

The spa at Cocoa was wonderful, we both had the signature massage which was one pf the best I have had, again I am very particular re my massages but the therapists at Cocoa are excellent.

We spent quite a bit of time in the hydrotherapy pools too...it was really nice to have the hydro pools there as a relaxing way to end the day after being out snorkeling and in the heat

One of the main concerns that I had before our trip was the weather, as I knew from the forums that the weather in the Maldives was so unpredictable even in the so-say dry season and we were staying at the start of the wet season...all my fears soon disappeared as we had day after day of perfect blue skies, fluffy white clouds and very intense heat...every day! we had a 2 days where it did go a bit overcast and rained very quickly...then then clouds past over and it was glorious sun again! so we will without doubt return at this time of year.

One of the factors that makes Cocoa Island so special is the attentiveness of the staff, everyone from the waiters, to the pool attendants, to the GM Felix was so genuine and cared that we were totally happy during our stay, everyone was so friendly and we were really overwhelmed by this level of service - a real credit to Felix, who is so very knowledgeable and hands-on, he took the time to speak with us most days and answer any of our questions on the island/snorkeling etc...you really don't come across this level of service very often!

so, to summarize, we really did have the most amazing experience at Cocoa Island and were truly sad to leave, everything about the island was elegant, classy and romantic. This holiday was totally worth the money and we are already planning to return next year, we are not even interested in trying another island now we have experienced such perfection at Cocoa!

We stayed at Cocoa Island for seven nights as part of our honeymoon. I researched so many resorts in the Maldives and this one just seemed perfect - the small number of water villas, huge lagoon, great reviews and restrained luxury. It was a combination which proved to exceed all our expectations.

We arrived at night time and were met straight away by two reps - one from Atoll Paradise and one from Cocoa. They led us straight away to our waiting boat which we had all to ourselves for the 40 minute journey to Cocoa. The sea was so flat and we travelled at 40 knots which was exhilarating through the dark. We arrived at Cocoa and the first impression was it was so quiet.

We were so excited about waking up the next morning and seeing the island in daylight. That morning we awoke early and watched the sunrise which was magical - a definite must at some point during your stay. There was not one person out that morning and we had the whole island to ourselves.

Our accommodation was the Dhoni Loft Suite which we loved. We had room 829 which was the second last villa on the jetty (right hand side) and thought this had a nicer outlook than villas further down the jetty. The view was of mostly open sea with dive boats anchored some distance away. I found the villa incredibly stylish - it was so light and bright and those views! It was spotlessly cleaned twice a day.

The pool area was stunning - there is quite a bit of vegetation around and sun beds are discreetly placed so you can have some privacy. Even though the hotel was full you could always get a sunbed and the pool wasn't crowded. A couple of times we managed to get the double sunbeds under the palm matting umbrellas and these were bliss!

We ate at the restaurant for every breakfast and dinner and around half of our lunches. The setting is gorgeous and we loved sitting outside with our feat in the sand. Breakfast was a feast which an extensive menu selection as well as a buffet with fresh fruit and pastries.

We normally enjoyed drinks in the bar before dinner - the cocktails were the best! The restaurant area was lit with lanterns every night and looked magical. The menu was varied and there were a few theme nights while we were there. I food was so good I was planning my lunch and dinner at breakfast. Room service is also fantastic.

During our stay we both visited the spa a few times and had great experiences. We also tried the yoga but found by the time it finished we missed the sunset.

We went on two trips - one the private island hopping. This is expensive but we thought really good value for money. We left in the morning and the first stop was the local island opposite Cocoa. The streets are so colourful and it was well worth a visit. Beware of the souvenir shop they take you to - the prices are outrageous. Next up we went to Rihiveli Island which is a budget island but very beautiful. They took us on a little speedboat over the lagoon to a tiny islet with half a dozen palm trees- heaven. The lagoon here seems to go all the way to the horizon. One the way back to Cocoa we stopped in the middle of nowhere for the snorkelling portion. I was scared stiff to jump in but it really was amazing.

The other trip we took was the sunset fishing - a little disappointing i only caught the tinniest fish imaginable. Most people caught something.

Lastly the staff were really fantastic. A credit to Cocoa and also the GM Felix.

I filled out a guest feedback survey when leaving and Felix emailed to advise the couple of suggestions made we being implemented which is nice to know. My husband was ok but I was terrified of snorkelling especially at the drop off and suggested a group snorkel everyday with one of the dive team to ease people into it. The last day i finally spent around 45 minutes at the drop off and didn't want to get out. There were so many fish and we also swam with a turtle. Next time I am back I won't make the same mistake - just do it!

Just a note for budgeting purposes - our bill at the end was more than half of what the accommodation was. We did not feel at all like things were overpriced - the spa, restaurant and bar charged the same as a top notch place in Australia so I don't know why people complain about this.

We will definitely be back at Cocoa again in the future and also try other Como properties. It's a holiday that will stay with us for a long time.

Thanks to the team at Cocoa

This is a spectacular location; the rooms are all surrounded by a shallow blue lagoon where you'll see fish, turtles and tiny reef sharks, and waking up to the view over the ocean is bliss. Try to get a loft villa, as these have a large deck and an outdoor shower with steps out to the sea, and are in a less rocky part of the lagoon. The island itself is tiny, and there's never any need to walk far; if we hadn't used the gym then we might have got fat.

The food is fantastic and we ended up having a different curry every night; make sure you try plenty of the local fish, and in particular the lobster.

What really stands out about Cocoa Island is the friendliness of the staff: they all genuinely want to make your stay perfect.

Room Tip: One of the low numbered villas - more private

We picked Cocoa Island for our honeymoon destination based on the fantastic reviews on TripAdvisor and we were not disappointed! As others have mentioned, they exceed your expectations in everything they do. The snorkeling on the house reefs is brilliant, the staff are there to meet your every need with a smile, the food is fantastic, as are the rooms, and the massage I had in the Como Shambala spa was the best I've ever had. The island itself is so picturesque that photos just cannot do it justice. I could go on and on about how much we loved Cocoa Island :) I would highly recommend it and we plan on returning as soon as we can!

We had the most amazing time at your beautiful island - we were there for our honeymoon in April. The experience exceeded our expectations in every way - from the great staff, to the snorkelling and the food which was to die for. The yoga every evening was a highlight too - we left feeling refreshed and ready to face our busy lives again. Keep up the good work.

Room Tip: The bigger villas most definitely worth it.
