“Avoid if you are used to a quality bed!”
Reviewed October 23, 2010

On arrival we were impressed by the location the local wildlife and the friendliness of the staff. The lodge looked clean and tidy and we were impressed with the hot tub and the swimming pool. My impressions however soon changed on getting into the bed that evening. The matress was of such a poor quality that you could feel every spring. My husband and I turned it over then ended up padding it out with blankets etc but it gave us terrible back ache. We were glad of the hot tub to ease the pain. The following day I spoke to the staff about it, yes they had had lots of complaints and they would let the owner know. You see these lodges are owned privately and let out through the Hoseasons name. They had no spare beds so we had to endure it. I have never felt such relief to leave knowing I would get into my own quality bed. When I spend nearly a Thousand pounds for a weeks holiday I expect hotel quality beds, my student days are long behind me I do not expect to have to slum it on an expensive weeks holiday!

We stayed at number 1.

We have just arrived back from our stay where we stayed for 7 days in Lord lamborne lodge. We had the most amazing view by far the best on site( we stayed at number 6).Our own private hot tub and a spacious accomodation with washing machine free view etc.Our 3 children explored the trees, went bramble picking, gazed at the rabbits(there are millions) and saw a deer on their last night.we felt totally secure and at ease allowing the children to explore the area around them. There is a stone bbq right near the lodge which we enjoyed 2 bbqs before settling down for the night in out hottub. This was by far the hightlight of our stay where we enjoyed the luxury of being in a hot tub morning and night.
The swimming pool was excellent had it to our selves most days-provided arm bands ,floats etc which was a fantastic help as we had forgetten to pack any.
Staff were very friendly and couldnt fault at all.
I would recommend this 100% for a tranquil setting-kids loved it we loved it .
Spent a fortune on entertaining during the day as london is soo expensive but we did visit south end on sea and chelmsford which wasnt soo bad.
The only thing id say is there are only 8 or so lodges here at the moment but they are planning on developing loads more.which i personally think will spoil the over all effect of the quietness here.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a positive review, we apologise in the delay in responding to you. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us back in 2010, it seems your children had an amazing time watching the wildlife around the park whilst you all enjoyed BBQ's and the use of the hot tub with your lodge. We are developing the park and had new lodges put on our site over the summer of 2013 which we have received great feedback from. Thank you once again and we hope you decide to come and stay with us again in the near future.

We got back yesterday from a great stay at Herbage, Yes it is true the place is still a work in progress with only 7 Lodges built but that did not affect us at all. The Lodge was Clean, and well designed. We were in number 7 which as not got a hot tub but I do agree with previous review they are not very private.
The lodge had everything you could need although the pans and some of the utensils were very cheap and almose impossible to use, (eg the head fell of the potato masher). The only other critisism we had was the baclony had 2 sets of steps and neither were blocked in we have a 4 year old and although the weather was lovely she could not play out.
The pool was beautiful our and sooo quiet,Our little one loved it.
The service from Karen and Tina on reception was second to none, friendly, helpful, they could not do enough for you.
We will be booking up again in April as this is a fab place to stay,
Oh and if you want to eat out, try the Anchor just up the road, fab food (a little expensive). and Izumi at maldon Heights for a lovely oriental buffet, (very cheap for what you get).

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a positive review, we apologise in the delay in responding to you. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us back in 2008. We are sorry that you felt the utensils in the lodge were not up to standard, we do encourage all guests to report such problems to reception where we can replenish items. We note that the lodge you stayed in did not have blocked in stairs, we are developing the park and had new lodges put on our site over the summer of 2013 and all of these newer lodges do have a gate to provide safety to small children. Thank you once again for your review and we hope you decide to come and stay with us again in the near future.

Herbage Park is a development of luxury lodges within the grounds of Warren golf Club, near Maldon, Essex. There are currently only 7 lodges built, but I understand that there are plans to increase this to over 45 during the next 12/24 months.

Booking - this is via Hoseasons and was quite a simple process.

Check in/Reception -
As the park is still very small, there is just 1 person on reception but everyone was friendly and helpful. Check in from 4pm and we were shown personally to the lodge.

Lodge -
We booked a Lord Lambourne, 3 bedroom with private hot tub. We were in lodge number 4. Overall the lodge was clean and very well equipped. The lodge did have most things though that you would need such as tv freeview video, dishwasher, washing machine etc (don't forget to pack dishwasher tablets etc if you want to use them). Towels were provided on each of the beds but I was a bit disappointed that there was no maid service, especially as we stayed a full 7 days. I have stayed in executive lodges in center parcs before and had a daily maid service which makes a difference. To be fair, I believe that clean towels would be available via reception if required.

If I had to be critical, I would mention the following; the lodge was far too close to the neighbours and the 'private' hot tub was not very private as there was no screen and you were in full view of everyone. The CCTV promised to be able to watch the local wildlife had not been installed and the bar b que stated in the brochure was non existant. Another disappointment was the view from the front was of the foundations of other lodges due to be built before christmas. The lodge was also in a position that you did not get much sun on the balcony/hot tub area - bad planning!

Many of the other lodges appeared to have small dogs with them. I have nothing against dogs but it did break the peace a little and especially when the owners walked right past your bedroom windown taking them for an early morning walk!

As there are so few lodges, it was generally very quiet apart from the Friday evening when something must have been happening at the golf club and the music echoed and thumped away late into the night keeping us awake - not sure if this was a one off.

Facilities -
The main reception block is also the home of the swimming pool, mini gym and shop. The pool was clean, quiet and relaxing. The gym was just a tiny room with a running machine etc which we did not use. The shop - well this was a bit of a joke as it was just a shelf with a few tins of beans etc - I assume as the development expands that this may expand! There is a local Co-op towards Danbury or if you plan to eat in quite a bit, suggest a trip towards Maldon where there is a large Morrisons.

They are selling membership of the pool/gym to locals for about £28 mthly and we did see a few people whilst we were there that were not staying on site - I can imagine that when all the lodges are built, the swimming pool will become much more hectic and lose the current relaxed atmosphere.

Local attractions -
Local wildlife is good to watch. There are 100's of rabbits on the park! We used as a base to visit various places including coastal towns of Walton on the Naze, Southend, Clacton etc. The promenade in Maldon was also very nice and if you have young children, Marsh Farm is worth a visit.

Summary
Overall, we had a good time. We wanted a little luxury and a lot of relaxation, peace and quiet and we achieved this, although I was a little disappointed with the facilities considering that I had paid £925 for only 7 days.

  • Liked — Space and everything was new.
  • Disliked — Hard beds, too close to other lodges, hot tub not private.
