“Best place to stay for Mountain Bikers in Afan”
Reviewed December 13, 2011

Stayed for a long weekend of mountain bike riding with group of 8 friends. It is the perfect set-up: great facilities, comfortable rooms, excellent food and really friendly service. As an added bonus there is no need to drive to the trail centres as they are only 10 mins ride away. By far the best place to stay I have found for a weekend trip to the Afan Valley.

Arrived and everything was as others had advised, massive secure bike storage, bike washing facilities, room fresh and appropriate, good condition considering used by mtbers, food was fresh, good quality and value. The Apple Crumble and custard which I had nearly every evening was absolutley fantastic and highly recommend it, just what my body needed!
As others have said only one small soap and no shower gel, lucky my wife remembered to pack some for me!.

Don't miss the great drop offs on Whites Level, looks a little scary but the landing although small is relatively safe.

I'm reviewing after my second weekend stay at the lodge in the last two years. I booked on both occasions for a mountain bike group of around ten guys. The lodge is perfectly situated between the two trail centres and a simple zip down the garden and early morning challenge of riding down the steps and over the bridge starts you on the old railway line that connects the two centres.

I liken the lodge to that of a ski in/ski out chalet you would find in the alps given it's easy link to each centre. The rooms are simple and effective, nothing you don't need and everything you do which includes plastic gear boxes for dirty biking shoes, camelbaks etc. Excellent showers and plentiful hot water help soothe away the aches of the days riding and comfy beds help with the well earned sleep.

The restaurant and bar area are comfy and spot on for post ride relaxation and refreshment and a laugh with friends. The food is of good quality, good portions and all freshly prepared and good value in my opinion. The included breakfasts are perfect for setting you up for a long day in the saddle.

My only complaint is that Richard and Louise don't have a Coed-y-Brenin Lodge!

Room Tip: Room 3 is set up with a wet room so sadly doesn't have a bath to soak in after a ride, I did mis...

Accommodation is clean and basic, and was great base for mountain biking on the superb local trails. Staff were excellent - very helpful, and even got up specially at 6am on a Sunday to unlock the secure bike storage for an early-morning sortie. Food in the bar and restaurant was good and reasonable value. Atmosphere was excellent and friendly. This probably isn't the best place for a romantic interlude, and has more of the feel of a ski-lodge where most of the guests are there to make the most of the outdoors rather than hang around the hotel all day. Plenty of hot water and good showers were much appreciated after a day's hiking or biking.

Richard and Louise are exceptionally friendly and have done a great job refurbishing/renovating this hotel. We stayed here for two nights in the most prestigious room (#1 - The Richard Burton room). We then headed off to Brechfa and were so impressed with the lodge that we decided to extend our holiday and stay another night on our way back.
This means that we can compare the quality of the different rooms.
The rooms are well furnished, and the only difference between the Richard Burton room and a normal room is the memorabilia and a couch.
Beds are very cosy and there are ample places to store clothes. Perhaps there could be some more hangers and hooks - especially in the bathroom, but when I mentioned this to Richard he said it was already on their snag list.
The lodge is very mtn biker friendly and they supply tubs in the rooms for muddy kit. The power shower is AMAZING, especially after a hard day's biking! Disappointing that there was only a tiny bar of soap and no shower gel though. The lock up facilities for bikes are good and they are in the process of installing a drying room. Facilities for washing kit would be great too. There is also a guard on nightwatch for extra peace of mind.
The restaurant is good and the food is very tasty, but it could be open later for dinner (last orders 8.30pm) and earlier on w/e for breakfast (opens at 8am).
The bar area is very sociable, but the pool table is in an awkward place - especially if there are groups of people sitting on the couches as they have to constantly move. We will definately be back (again!) - I can't recommend this place enough.

Room Tip: Try to get a room upstairs - beautiful view and not as noisy.

friendly welcome. lovely clean room. nice facilities. we also had our tea there which was really tasty and a couple of beers. the whole stay was great value and the best bit was breakfast which was super tasty and filling, an excellent set up for biking and sightseeing in south wales. the Afan trails run right past the lodge what more could you want for a mountain bike holiday...tip for bikers is to set of from there rather than paying to park your car at Afan...would go back in a second.

Looking at the picture we thought we were going to be in the middle of nowhere with peace and tranquility, unfortunately the view was of the back of the hotel, the front of the hotel was on a road and our room was also in the front of the hotel. Although not the M25 the road still had regular traffic and we could here them clearly. We had a twin room which was very basic, I wanted to read and my friend didn't and there were no table lamps so it meant leaving the big lights on, so I did not read.
However, the staff were very welcoming and friendly and as the weather was appauling we had a very enjoyable evening in the bar with food and drink watching the football.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel
