“Sani Top Chalet Capitalise on the view, but poor accommodation and not worth staying over!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2011

We stayed at Sani Top Chalet in December 2010 the day after Christmas, the view is the only thing spectacular about Sani Top Chalet.
For R1100 per night for a Chalet, at the very least one would expect a clean bed with fresh bed linen.
I was so disgusted at the state of our bed, that I had to go to the manager on duty to get fresh linen and changed the linen myself.
The room had a bad gas leak, we had to sleep with all the windows open.
IF you intend staying at Sani Top Chalet, let it only be for the view and NOT for the total experience of nice accommodation worth R1100!!
The food is not great either...
Maybe we got there on a bad day, but the experience was spoilt, as it cost us a great deal to get there...
I would rather recommend staying at the backpackers down the road, at least you know what you getting for your R80.00
:(

The accommodation at Sani Top is quite simply a rip off. Four of us shared a small, cold room for equivalent of 50GBP each - two of us on cramped and extremely squeaky metal bunkbeds - the kind I imagine you get in prison. The result was a horrible night's sleep. I felt a bit imposed on that the owner requested me to collect supplies from his house in the nearest town in South Africa, with no thanks or apologies for inconvenience whatsoever. We arranged to be collected by the Sani Top backie at the border as our car was not 4wd - also a complete rip off and extremely uncomfortable ride (in the back, sat on a tyre in the driving rain next to crates of supplies). As the other reviewers attest - the view from Sani Top is breathtaking - and worth a visit if you're in the area, and the food is also nice and plentiful (included in room price), but I left feeling a bit ripped off by the experience and wishing I had spent that precious holiday time elsewhere.

Don't expect anything from the Sani Top Chalet and you will have a great stay. The mission statement is simply that this is the highest pub in Africa, and that is what you get - drink and simple food and simple but ample accommodation to match. The friendly and helpful locals really contrast with the bad-manners of the "pub-minded" guests. But what a view and the drive up/down is extraordinary. This is easy in a decent 4x4, so don't be fooled by reviews of the drive by inexperienced or nervous drivers. If it snows or there is ice, that is a different story, whatever road you are on.

Our stay was in winter, so at that altitude it was very cold. The howling wind ripping through our chalet during the night meant that the combination of the blazing log and gas fires was still woefully short of the mark. But sufficient blankets, serious cuddling and you know the possible rest, made for a more memorable night.

This experience was a rare treat for reasons that are really impossible to explain. Make sure you photograph yourself in front of the "Welcome to Lesotho" daubing on the wall of the Lesotho border post, priceless...

We stayed up here for one night in the backpackers, it was a little bit creepy because we were the only ones in the building and the walk next door to the bathrooms was a challenging one because of the cold. There is nothing really up here but the views are amazing, I think a pony ride or a hike would be lovely if you brave enough to stand the cold. The morning we woke up it was -7'c. The staff were great and the food was amazing specially the dinner!!! Sani pass is a bit nerve-wracking but definitely glad we made the adventure up there. Would have liked to explore Lesotho a bit more - next time!!!

We stayed there in June (winter), and there was no water. The rooms are equipped with a fire place, but that was not enough to heat the rooms. The view was awesome, though. If you want to do some skiing, you need to bring your own stuff. Only at Afriski (Oxbow area) you can hire all the equipment. Afriski is about 3.5 hours from Sani Pass.
All in all, if you go there during wintertime, please be prepared for some 'camping'. And don't be afraid of some mice and rats.

Stayed here on a week-long tour of Lesotho - it seems that many who come do so from up the Sani Pass from ZA and so stay only for lunch or maybe for the night. For us it was a nice break in the journey from Mokhotlong to Katse. We had not planned on doing the Sani Pass but when we realised what a big deal it was, and that we ideally needed more fuel, we went down to Underberg and back in an afternoon - WHAT an experience. The hotel - well, they are expanding a little at the moment, so some building work is going on, the positioning on the cliff is pretty bleak and it is as they say, the Highest PUB in Africa (not boutique hotel etc) so it's a little scruffy round the edges, but in a good way - and the host, Roger, was great. The atmosphere in the bar before the evening meal (it's served at one set time, family style) was very friendly and chatty and there are lots of pictures and news clippings around with the history of the Pass. Food was quite basic but home-cooked, generous and good. There's electricity most of the time, but again, you have to remember where you are. We stayed in a rondavel which was very nice and cosy with a decent enough bathroom and a log stove that seemed to be a bit feeble. This place gets four stars because although it is in no way "manicured" it is friendly, clean, welcoming and good value, and is set in some of the most extraordinarily beautiful scenery you will ever see.

Thanks Gisela - this was an amazing place to stay! Contact our very organized and brilliant tour organizer: (--) for any trips in SA! This place was litteraly placed above the clouds - so eventhough the clouds came in the afternoon it just added to the charm of staying in such a natural spot of beauty! The staff was as friendly as can be, the food very well prepared and plenty, the atmosphere relaxed and cosy, evenings with guitar and locals singing infront of the fireplace, nice trekking, horseriding and quadbiking trips. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
