“fantasy captured in glass”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2013

we spent a morning at the mazzega murano glass factory. after watching a local artist demonstrate how the glass is blown, we were treated to a trip through the gallery. i have never seen such a diverse collection of glass to choose from! we found beautiful, inexpensvie presents, but also purchased a piece of art to ship home. we felt that our time in venice will be right there on the wall for us to smile at every time we see it! marco was quite charming, and what a salesman!! it was worth every penny we spent to hear about the artists, and this time honored tradition amongst families.

“Interesting and beautiful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2012

Our Hotel arranged a trip to this factory and it was both interesting and beautiful.

The trip was a free one; we were taken to the factory by water taxi - an experience everyone should have anyway! We were met by a guide who spoke perfect English who then took us around the factory. As it was August, most of the factory was on holiday, but there was a man who showed us how he made vases and glass horses while our guide explained about the processes and the kilns. Apparently, next week they start firing up the rest of the kilns so they have a week to heat up before everyone comes back to work in September because the intense heat needed would cause the kilns to shatter with thermal shock if they were heated too quickly.

From the factory he took us to their showrooms - nine rooms filled with the most amazing examples of glasswork. He told us that the chandeliers and mirrors at Versailles were made by Venetian masters and that the glassworks were originally placed on the island of Murano hundreds of years ago to protect Venice from possible fires.

After we had been around the showrooms for as long as we wanted he took us down to the shop and told us that we were free to browse or to go into the town and that the free water taxi home would be at the waterside at 12 noon. There was no pressure to buy from the shop at all and the whole experience was relaxed and fun.

I would recommend the trip to this factory for the staff alone, they were extremely helpful and didn't hassle us a bit. The prices in the shop were comparable with most places we looked.
