“A Great Place to rest up for a night or two”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

Overlooking the Etendeka Mountains down into the Stone River Valley our bure/hut/chalet is positioned perfectly to capture the changing colours and textures as the sun goes down. We know there are a variety of animals down there in the valley but the only life we can see is the occasional bird. It doesn't matter. The view is stunning, the gin and tonics have ice and fresh lime and the silence is blissful. We have definitely picked the right place to rest up and an imaginative dinner confirms this view. A set meal, on which we had been consulted when we arrived - just in case we wanted something different - it was good quality, fresh food prepared for each table depending on their arrival time. I was beginning to regret only booking one night but, lets just make the most of it. After a fabulous breakfast, I very nearly changed my mind and asked for another night - but my partner reminded me of our forward schedule so, reluctantly, I left.

Room Tip: I believe that all double rooms are the same

The rooms sit on top of a ridge (and you have to be brought into the lodge by 4x4 from their parking area) and the views defy description.

The rooms are basic, but comfortable. Meals were fine and overall service was very good.

Game viewing in this area is limited, but the scenery tops off the whole experience.

2 Nights here on way thru to Etosha.
Driving a Toyota Hilux and track in was fine.
Loved the atmosphere of the place and accommodation/meals were of a high standard understanding the remoteness of the place. The drive thru the hills to get there is worth the visit alone.
Staff were very attentive and helpful.
Loved the view from the balcony and thru binoculars we could see many many animals on the plains below. Including giraffe and elephants.
The game drive/sundowner drive was very disappointing and we may have been misled as people we met after had gone to a viewpoint, where we stopped middle of the track with no views for the drinks. Very few animals and not worth the effort for the high cost compared to other places we stayed.

Overall well worth a couple of nights. More to enjoy the views than maybe do the extra drives etc. We saw the Desert Elephants along the road on the way to Etosha and so many Rhinos in Etosha we lost count.

Paths to the rooms are really not suited for anyone with mobility issues. Paths very uneven and rickety steps to the rooms.

We arrived just after dusk and the guard thought for a moment before allowing us to proceed up the steep, rocky hill to the lodge. Several cars were parked outside the gate, but we assured him that our Subaru Forester could make the climb. 300 nervous meters later we arrived in the parking lot and were welcomed by the lodge's friendly staff. We were quickly led to our room and told that although the dinner hour was reaching its end, we should take our time, unpack, and come eat when we were ready. We were led to our room and could tell under the nearly full moon that we were in for a spectacular view in the morning. What an understatement! The next morning, we found ourselves overlooking a green canyon stretching endlessly into the distance, framed on both sides by flat-topped mountains. In the distance we spotted half a dozen mountain zebras. "I heard hyenas last night", announced my teenage daughter.

Grootberg Lodge is, we think, the only lodge that is fully-owned by a conservancy, Namibia's innovative concept that allows the indigenous tribes to share in the tourism industry, with help and training from the WWF and other partners. The staff are clearly personally invested in the satisfaction of the guests and do everything they can to ensure our needs are met. It was too cold to partake in the small infinity pool that overlooks the breathtaking canyon, but the rooms were spotless, stylishly decorated, roomy and comfortable. We were told the solar heaters might mean cold water in the morning, but the hot water never ran out.

The food was some of the best I've had in Namibia (we've lived here two years). They asked us how we'd like our steaks done, and when it was ready, not only was it cooked as we ordered, but this is the first and only time in Namibia they didn't ask who ordered which steak - they knew exactly where each one went, and there was no awkward asking about orders or switching of plates after the wait staff left.

The only negative comment could be that the excursions they offered - elephant or rhino tracking, game drives and other options - were a bit more expensive than some of the other places we've been, and can add up for a family of four. But then again, given the location, the product you're getting at Grootberg is ultimately a bit nicer than your average Namibian game drive.

Wi-fi is available in the main building, and you have to charge your phones and electronics at reception.

Room Tip: All the rooms provide an equally spectacular view and are a close walk to the main building.

after you've recovered from negotiating the awful driveway it is pleasure all the way! The staff are all extremely helpful and so friendly, the food is great, the location is brilliant, the views are spectacular - so relaxing we didn't move all day. Massages have just been added to the menu and it was excellent - great value! We didn't do any game drives, so can't comment on those. But considering the long distances one needs to travel in Namibia on dirt roads this is a great stopover north, before Etosha.

The way I was received by Agnes until my farewell by the manager the next morning was just Great. Great welcome, great accommodation, great food, great view from my room, delicious dinner; in short this is some of the best experiences Namibia can offer its own people and indeed visitors.

Ask for accommodation 1-8 since you will have the sun until late ( in the winter time ) and I believe best view.

Go to Grootberg you will never regret it …. Simply the best

Room Tip: Ask for room 1-8.. best view and sun until late in the wintertime

We spent two nights in Grootberg and as everyone else, we were also amazed by the view. It is unbelievable to wake up with this view!
Because of the lions in the neighbourhood, we could not go on a hiking tour, and therefore we decided to spend a day at the pool. All other activities were rather expensive compared to activities offered by other lodges. Maybe because of the location?
Nevertheless, we really enjoyed our stay here. Very good dinner! Also a big thanks to Sean, the manager, for helping us find a new spare tyre! If everyone was that helpful...
