“Really nice pub, but something missing...”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

I was originally introduced to the Red Lion via a business lunch and over the limited time there, I was initially quite impressed.

Amazed by the quirky perspex covered well inside the bar (you can walk on it), I decided to return a few days later with my wife and kids. As before, the pub itself is really well presented but not busy. There is no childrens menu as such, but you can ask for a reduced portion of any particular meal.

Anyway, the food came and went without hiccup. Pleasant tasting but the portion size could have been a lot bigger. Meals at the Red Lion are not particularly cheap. A locally sourced steak costing £13 and it only comes with a small portion of chips, three onion rings and a pot of peas. (This is the only steak on the menu, and forget about mixed grills - None present)

Service is prompt, but i have mixed feelings about this. I found the girls that serve neither welcoming or rude. They're there to do a job i suppose, but there's a lot to be said for making a customer feel welcome. Efforts to turf us out as soon as i'd settled the bill didn't really go down well and a nice goodbye as you leave and a thank you for your custom would be a nice touch. As we left, one of the girls came through with a handful of cutlery and we had to move out of the way as it was obvious that she wasn't going to stop for anyone. Basic manners for paying customers methinks.

As i've mentioned before, the menu is not exhaustive. The starters are limited to soup of the day and several tourines filled with pulled pork (foul and tasteless), mushrooms etc. Grossly over priced at £4.95 each.

As i say £100+ for a family of four, two of which are under 7 years old is pretty exessive. Personally i'd go to another local (won't mention the name) that serves bigger portions and has a wacky warehouse at half the cost.

I'd pay premium prices, but not for this food.

I will leave the last words to my 6 year old daughter who, within 30 minutes of returning home asked "Daddy can i have a packet of crisps please, i'm hungry"

“Great Ale”
Reviewed November 16, 2012

The pub is attached to a micro brewery and the beer that is brewed on site is really very good. The pub itself is very pleasant and serves good pub grub. If you like real ale this is the place for you
