We visited in July, and contrary to warnings, monsoon is a good time to visit--- was cooler. The caves are about 2 hours from Aurangabad, and they are VERY worth the drive. We arrived about 10h and went to the view point higher, across the river. Then we walked down to the caves--- a gorgeous walk and view. We saw all of the caves-- and that took about 4+ hours, even at a good clip. Definitely plan the entire day here--- really worth it to learn about the paintings and sculptures. Plan a lunch, for ex boxed lunch from your hotel, as there isn't much to buy on site other than snacks/drinks at the car park. I've heard of people combining Ajanta+Ellora caves in one day, but it would NOT do justice to either location. One day in each site is really the best.

multiple buddhist caves carved out of a single rock dating back around 2000 years, the ajanta caves have been rightly given the title of a world heritage site. intricately-carved cave along with luscious greenery provide the perfect location to spend a day with your loved ones. The sheer complexity of each and every cave and the elegant beauty of the paintings mesmerize you. Caves 1,2,4,17,17,19,26 are must-see. The things i didnt like were...

1) A senseless amenity fee was charged for the stalls that have been put up. WHAT RUBBISH!
2)The stalls near the caves sell you souvenirs which are very priced much higher than the market price. So BARGAINING IS A MUST. i got duped even after bargaining heavily.
3)The food they serve at the small restaurants nearby sucks. GET YOUR OWN FOOD.

overall, an amazing experience :)

Located 2 hours outside Aurangabad, these cave temples, carved out by Buddhist monks, is well worth the journey. Located in a cliff face at a bend in the river, they are almost completely hidden until well inside the entrance. We are usually of mixed-emotions about hiring a guide, but, here, he proved quite useful, as the paintings inside the caves are extremely detailed. His ability to point out the fine details increased our enjoyment. At cave 8 cross the river to climb up a series of stairs to get unimpeded views. Although it was a very warm day, I was glad I made the effort.
