This is a relatively new hotel packed with marble, comfortable rooms, and tremendous views (if you're on the river side of the building). But, like many Chinese hotels outside of the big cities, it lacks the software that makes a decent hotel a very good hotel: ie, it lacks polished service. To be sure, the staff is incredibly helpful, very friendly, and full of effort. But they are left to work with what they were given, which is - quite clearly - very little training. Thus, when I ordered cheesecake from room service, I was delivered - with a smile - a plate with a piece of frozen cheesecake fresh from the freezer. Staff didn't seem to know what was wrong; and I was too hungry to be bothered.
Likewise, the breakfast buffet: it's awful. Yes, it looks good, it looks as if it has all of the things that one expects from a five star breakfast buffet. But just try and bite into any of the pastries - they taste like chalk; or the sausage - they are chewy like ligaments; or the watermelon - I swear it was rotten.
Should these culinary screw-ups keep you from this hotel? Not if you want to stay somewhere much worse, or in Hangzhou (an hour's drive due to traffic conditions). Instead, bring your own food, and enjoy rooms that far exceed what you could ever expect in a hotel in a small Chinese city of this size.
