Description: We stayed at Chateau Philomel, Lillers. The owner recommended this restaurant. About 20 mins drive away. We have been twice. A beautiful retaurant. Gastronomique.

The restaurant is very special. It offers menus priced from EUR 22 to 48 and higher. We had the menu at EUR 32 and the one at EUR 48. The latter menu was superb. They offered some good wines in half bottles.
Breakfast in the restaurant was also superb, - far better than the usual French breakfast. Indeed, I cannot remember such a good breakfast in France 50 years of visiting the country.

The hotel has some characteristics that some people will find not ideal. For example, it is separate from the restaurant (one must go outside to go from one to the other) and the staircase is steep and narrow (and there is no lift). But, if these characteristics are acceptable then the hotel is entirely satisfactory, good value-for-money, and it is perfect if the restaurant is important for you.

There are only five hotel rooms. Ours was immaculate, functional, high quality and reflects the good taste of the owner.
The restaurant was superb. Again tastefully decorated, comfortable, with good service, an excellent wine list with reasonable prices, and the best food we had on our ten day visit to France.
We recommend it highly and unreservedly, and will go there again on our next visit to the area.

Driving in the dark through small towns, we were a bit anxious about what we'd find. Hidden off a small street was "Le Buffet," an elegant dining room with some of the best French food we've ever had. And the wine list was amazing. Truly a gourmet kitchen.

We made such a effort to honour our booking, despite hurricanes and ferry delays, I am sorry we did, our room was suitable for a single traveller basic and VERY small.

We had emailed for a Special Dinner bed and Breakfast deal 175 euros, we asked the waiter twice which was the special menu and then asked if we were to have free cocktails, which were brought to us, there was a young waitress obviously not bothered about guests , who virtually ignored us. The lobster ravioli in a fish soup ( very similar to the ones in a jar at the supermarket ) was OK , but not special, the fish to follow was again just OK my husband ordered chicken and a small chicken was served without any sauces most uninteresting , we waited 39 minutes from the time our plates were cleared until the appearance of the dessert, no choice just a trio of frozen samples
the best part of the meal was the mushroom veloute amuse bouche . Breakfast was the usual breads , with half a waffle but no coffee available to serve yourself so limited to one cup, I went to the kitchen to ask for another cup.
We discussed the folly of returning to this restaurant but worse was to follow , the chef produced a bill of 300 euros and would not honour the special Dinner bed and break fast rate 175 euros .We are over 70 and would never have chosen this restaurant had they not offered a Special Deal , my lack of enthusiasm for the food and overall experience was formed before the final insult.....my advice Stay at the splendid Le Sapiniere in Wisques or the lovely La Sebastion close to St Omer , the chef at le buffet could do with a lesson from the patron of this establishment in how to treat guests.
Le buffet de la Gare is now part of the Logis de France group no doubt to boost his business trade but that is what it is now a commercial travellers hotel with food,

Every time we pull up in front of Le Buffet I puzzle over why this wonderful restaurant sits in a railway station car park at the butt end of one of the least exciting towns in the region. I'd never have just spotted it as I passed by, but thanks to the Logis De France saucepan ratings I first booked in some years back and we've been returning every time we're in the area.

Hotel rooms, which we always use in order to make the most of the wine list, are simple and functional, spotless and adequately equipped (and cheap) - but the food is the star here, and has been from the start.

The surroundings are a bit blingy but the service is smooth and sophisticated and it doesn't matter whether you pick the most basic menu or the most complicated degustation - we're never have a less than marvellous mouthful.

The wine list is a bit high end but you can find delicious choices at a reasonable price. Overall the food is very competitively priced, with intricate dishes making the most of what's in season and high quality ingredients throughout. Menus feature on the hotel website.

On our latest visit we treated friends who have experience of some of the biggest names on the British restaurant scene - they were amazed by the quality and class to be found in such an unexpected setting.

Chef patron Thierry Wident has a real talent and an obvious passon for food - I don't know why he chose to set up here or why he hasn't yet moved on to something bigger or fancier, but I am very happy that he hasn't and will continue returning for as look as he's working his magic.

One tip, though - don't book the breakfast if you're staying. Not that it doesn't look delicious, but you won't be hungry the morning after...
