“Pleasant surprise”
Reviewed December 10, 2012

I had heard of Etxebarri and seen it featured on a TV show, but still did not know what expect on my visit. I was not disappointed. The food was a mix of somewhat common (although not commonly prepared) and exotic/unique. They have a great ability to make it seem almost "home cooked" yet far from home cooked. I find it hard to explain. The meal was one of the best I've ever had. What this chef does with smoke is truly remarkable. If you enjoy beef steak of any kind Etxebarri is a must. I can't imagine a better filet anywhere. A beautiful restaurant in a beautiful village.

“Food is good, but totally overpriced”
Reviewed December 3, 2012

The food is ok, but absolutley overpriced. I know literally dozens of restaurants in the Basque Country where one can eat equally as good -or even better- at a fraction of the price. I do not understand how it can be considered one of the top 50 restaurants in the world when it may be debatable if it is in the top 50 Basque restuarants.

The "txuleta" (steak) is good, but nothing special. The "besugo" (sea bream) below average. The price: stratospheric.

I have been there twice in the past 5 years and both times I left somehow dissapointed.

But if you are rich and do not mind, go! The place where it is located is beautiful, right next to impressive Anboto, the mythological Basque mountain.

“Not worth the trip”
Reviewed October 31, 2012

As usual we got lost; the driving instructions were not good and acurate. Despite the delay; they let us eat and we had their tasting menu. While the dishers were good; the last two dishes, fish and meat were extremely disappointing. Fish was probably frozen and we could not even cut the meat. After all the the excellent reviews; we were very disappointed. We ate in 2 one star and two 3 star michelin restaurants in Bilbao and St. Sabastian all were outstanding. So don't bother to travel to this place.

“Definitely not worth the trip. Service was poor and not well trained.”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

Food was fresh and well cooked but it took 3 :30 hours. Waiters didn't know there wine list or any details about the tasting menu. Even after asking for help pairing a wine with the tasting menu.
This is definitely not worth the long trip to get there or to find it.

“Wonderful birthday lunch!”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

It wasn't easy to get a reservation and we got quite lost trying to find the restaurant, but it was well worth going the extra mile to dine here. It was my birthday lunch and it was absolutely fantastic, from the bread through the dessert. The subtle grilling flavor in each dish is impossible to describe. Gastronomy is always an integral part of our vacations and this did not disappoint!
