We visited when a fantastic self portrait exhibition was the major attraction, but this stunning musem is almost an art work in itself. As a wonderful contrast to the Statens Museum for Kunst, this museum's lighting was more muted and the rooms and their outside views showed off the artworks to stunning effect. The food and views from the restaurant also made a wonderful day trip from the city of Copenhagen. There is an easy train ride along the coast but a ten/fifteen minute walk from the station, so those who have difficulty in walking should beware as there was no sign of a taxi around the station when we arrived.

It takes some time to get there, as it is outside Copenhagen, but this is one of the best museums of modern art I have seen, as the surroundings are also one big art museum - for sculptures in the garden all the way down to the beach. Beware that it will take all day, but it is worth it.

the art gallery is well out of Copenhagen and worth a visit is you have the Copenhagen Card, which gets you in for free and gets you there by rail or bus.
The exhibition was a reather self indugent exhibition of self portraits and left us feeling somewhat disturbed! However the garden and sculptures helped to lift the mood and the views out to sea were wonderful.

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is about a 35 minute train ride from Copenhagen but it is well worth the trip. You can purchase discounted train fares and admission price from major stations - I paid 180 Danish krone for both the return trip and admission to the Museum. When I visited the Museum they had a special exhibition of self portraits by major artists it was really interesting. What was on display was a number of well known artist's painting of themselves, a photographic display of what they look like (which in my view was kinder than the artists view of themselves and also films depicting some of the major artists. I watched a documentary on David Hockney which covered his more recent work in Yorkshire and a biography of Freda Khola - both were really good. The location of the museum is quite spectacular - it is near the sea and there is a great sculpture garden that you can walk through. All in all it was a great experience.

We had spent several days in Copenhagen before so we looked for an alternative outside the city for a cruise port stop. This museum is worthy of a day of a trip. It is set beautifully overlooking water. The exhibits included fine modern art and Danish painters, an exploration of architectural trends in Scandinavia that helped us understand the social welfare system and moving pen and ink drawings of WW2. Our friends who we traveled with were in the museum with us and saw equally impressive art that we never got to.

One problem we had was that the trains back to Copenhagen stopped running due to an accident on the track. We had to improvise to get back which involved taking a bus to a different train station a taxi back to the ship all among people who spoke very little English but it worked.
