We had a great evening at the Gasthuishoeve but that was only because we were with a group of very good friends.
The staff is very friendly but the atmosphere in the restaurant is very unpleasant. It became colder as the evening was progressing and there was a musty smell.
The menu was not innovative and it took a while to decide what to pick as there was nothing that got me excited. Everything just sounded so outdated. I decided on the Ostend Sole: the fish was cooked with too much butter and too greasy, I ate maybe half of it. The accompanying fries were not tasteful at all; hard to believe they were freshly made. My partner had the Steak Hoevegras. The steak was completely covered by a big pile of little fries. And, he got another bowl of those little fries on the side! Even 6 people would not have been able to eat all those fries! So they all went to waste! One in our party had the Vispannetje. I noticed that he only took a few bites from it. The rest went to waste. Somebody else took the pasta with asparagus and salmon; she finished maybe 1 third of it and the rest went to waste. Portions are ridiculoulsy huge and since the food is not appetizing, most of it goes to waste. What I enjoyed most, was the salad that accompanied the fish: it was fresh and the dressing tasty. Besides our large group, there were very little people dining that evening. Unless they get a new cook, fresh up the place and overhaul the whole menu, I will not return and I will certainly not recommand to go there.
