Review of Zimmer Tower

Zimmer Tower
Ranked #2 of 19 things to do in Lier
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed December 30, 2013

As a kid I visited this museum in the 70's. It almost hasn't changed since then. Sometimes nostalgia feels fine, even for young people to see how museums used to be. But here I have the feeling that they missed it. It is so 20th century. It will be hard to attract a young crowd if they don't change anything.

This is really very well worth a brief visit even if you have no specific interest in clocks, just to see Zimmer's amazing 93 dial astronomical clock in the museum (and some less ambitious models), as well as the inner workings of the lovely 13 dial centenary clock on the tower itself and the astronomic studio inside (quick research here: www.famousbelgians.net/zimmer.htm). We are not clock lovers as such but still spent about an hour there: looking, admiring and listening to the helpful recorded descriptions [various languages]. I haven't quite mastered the purpose of each dial but understood the broad gist. One, in the little museum, takes i think about 19,000 years to complete its cycle - one of the slowest moving mechanics in the world.

Moreover, this exceptional attraction is in a most attractive small Flemish town [contrasting the box-like Flemish houses we passed en route], with free parking 5-10 minutes from the centre, a lovely small park, interesting streets & housing, an impressive town hall square and the worthwhile-to-visit Begijnhof [quarter with small houses and a large church, formerly inhabited by lay RC women]. Only spotted one chocolate shop though!

If you love clocks this is THE place for you. Amazingly simple mechanics, which are on view, working an amazingly intricate clock. The tower was reconstructed to house this wonderful clock built by Mr Zimmer a native of Lier. There are recordings on each level explaining the workings etc in English if you wish. Mr Zimmers workshop is also included in the museum and is a faithful copy as we visited with a friend who knew Mr Zimmer and had visited the workshop years ago! Well worth a visit.

I'm born here, so while visiting my hometown you have to see this "tower". All the different watches that were made long time ago and still run correctly are a piece of ART from the watchmaker louis zimmer, also born in Lier.

Lier is a little hidden gem and well worth a detour. There are many well preserved old building along cobbled streets including the Zimmer Tower plus many independent shops, cafes and restaurants.
