I always feel some trepidation when booking a bed and breakfast as some are simply too cloying, but those anxieties quickly faded when we met the hosts of Domus Silva. This Bed and Breakfast deserves all of its excellent ratings.
When we arrived we were greeted by Carlo (Suzy was shopping for breakfast foods). Months before I had enquired about possibly hiring a birdwatching guide. Carlo explained that he was unable to find a guide, but he had printed maps of some excellent sites to watch birds. He also lent us a bird encyclopedia and he had gone through and marked all the birds of the area. This took an effort that was well beyond the call of duty. (Happy ending to this story: we went to one of the sites Carlo recommended, by chance hooked up with a local birdwatcher, and saw several new birds including a target bird for us: a blue throat in full breeding plumage!).
The room was spacious and on the ground floor, a welcome change after a week and a half of climbing stairs and small rooms that is characteristic of European cities. It was exceptionally clean.
Suzy was also delightful and her breakfasts were excellent. The first day we commented on the cheeses she had selected and she made a special effort to go to a local convent and get us their cheese for the next morning. Yummy!
Our only regret was that we didn't have more time to spend in Flanders. If you are in the area, treat yourself to a stay at Domus Silva.
