We stayed for three nights at this lovely hotel set on a hill-top in the middle of the wine district. Opened in 2007, everything about the hotel is of course new and fresh. Our room was spacious and nicely decorated. We slept like babies in a most comfortable double-bed and woke up to spectacular views of the Miolo vineyard estate.
The hotel specializes in wine and spa, hence they offer a first-class spa area overlooking vineyards and the Serra Gaucha mountain tops surrounding the valley. We really enjoyed the spa and treated ourselves to a tonic massage and a relaxing swim in the tempered pool.
When it comes to wine, one of the sommeliers of the hotel gave us a tour of the magnificient newly built bodega that holds approx. 40 000 bottles of wine, of local as well as international origin.
The hotel also has a shop where they offer different products, ranging from cigars to bath robes and tennis balls. Speaking of tennis, the hotel just finished building two nice outdoor clay courts. When we arrived we found out, from an intinary posted in the elevator, that the Sports Director of the hotel offered free tennis lessons. Turned out the guy was really dedicated and after the lesson he took us for a walk around the hotel, showing us the best place from where to witness the sunset!
We ate some great food and enjoyed some nice wine in the restaurant. However, we felt the food could have been a touch better, some of the dishes we had were lovely while others left us indifferent. Also, the hotel are experimenting with some kind of a "mobile breakfast buffet", meaning that you as a guest sit down at your table and the staff run around offering you food from carts. This caused some waiting and we also found the selection to be a bit limited.
I can not say enough about the ambience of the hotel, two giant open fireplaces, sofas and comfortable armchairs, a cosy bar etc etc. Also, the hotel offers free, powerful internet and we could use our laptop everywhere in the hotel without any problem.
Finally, Gramado and Canela are two pittoresque "European-style" small towns located about two hours drive from the hotel. Go there and enjoy a bit of Europe in Brasil. We found some nice shopping and had a lovely fondue-lunch.
