Imagine to awake in a kingsize bed from where you enjoy a 180° view over the Baliem Valley, still covered with the morning blanket of clouds ... While you are still snoozing, the first rays of sun appear chasing the clouds from the valley, revealing an awesome panorama at the food end of your bed!
After a visit to the lovely, natural stone shower of your spacious, wooden room-hut, you are ready for the walk over the resorts naturally integrated stairways and paths: heading towards the impressive, open-air lounge for a delicious breakfast (with pancakes!!!). The lounge is not only impressive because of its splendid view over the valley, but as much because of its abundant decoration with art objects: bisj-poles, shields, masks, drums, weapons ... What a collection!
During the day you have many superb walking options around the hotel, all offering splendid nature views. Or you can simply enjoy the amazing view from your own balcony, laying on a deckchair under the grass-tatched roof of your Honai-style room... Or from behind the orchid-filled canoes on the balcony deck of the lounge. This is pure natural luxury !!!
By the way: the hotel does not only offer the possibility of charging the human batteries, it also offers a 24h electricity supply to charge camera batteries ... which is pretty amazing considering its location !!!
And after a day of absorbing all this beauty: grab a candlelight cocktail at the Stoneage Bar !!!
We loved this hotel in its exceptional setting: this is the top in Papua ... not to be missed!
We were even glad that we missed our plane, allowing us one extra night here!!!

The Baliem Valley is isolated...and that is the reason to go. The sun rises over the mist; you walk through it in splendour. You can take hiking tours through the mountains, or just hop a local bus from Wamena into some of the small villages. But most memorable, even if staged, was the Dani war dance and pig feast arranged by the knowledgeable manager at this resort. The rooms are very large with a deck that looks over the valley, water is hot, and the bed is comfortable. The food could use a little improvement.

Whatever you read on this resort is true. Positive and Negative. Positive is the excellent location, wonderful view over the valley, original set up of the bungalows, friendly staff. Also true is that the resort is in need of refurbishment and repair. Food served is indeed basic. No alcohol in the bar, if you want a drink, bring a bottle of your own. Everything in the Baliem Valley must be flown in by air, obviously that means everything is more expensive than elsewhere in Indonesia. So whether you will like your stay depends entirely on how you cope with all these things. Do not expect the luxury of an african lodge. Access by car is bumpy there is no real road just a track. There is only light from 17h to 22h with a generator, although work is being done to connect the lodge with an electricity central near Wamena, so that could be changed in the near future. We liked our stay because it is part of the Baliem experience.

One of THE most spectacular settings you can wish for, overlooking the remote Baliem Valley. The location is superb, but terrible to get to!
There is a fantastic collection of tribal art (a museum almost worth the trip on its own) and an ambience not dissimilar to African game lodges. The whole thing was conceived by a German industrialist more than two decades ago and it feels as if he hasn't been there in the last decade to check out how it's going. Everything seems a little run down and seedy. Although the hotel has a licence to serve alcohol (the whole valley is essentially 'dry'), there's none available. Meals are very basic - the best were the breakfasts. The generator runs only from 17:00 to 22:00 and apart from this there is no electricity. The bathrooms are very dark and in the mornings you have to shave or whatever by candlelight. Don't come expecting any modern convenience and treat it as an adventure - enjoy the spectacular setting! And try to forget the rough ride up the so-called 'road' to the resort!!! It might have been possible - if we could only have had a cold beer!

Room Tip: Most have fantastic views but realise that the walk to the higher rooms can be tough for the elderly...

We just returned from a trip to Papua and had a wonderful time. The people were very sweet. The Baliem Valley Resort is in a beautiful setting -- however it is very isolated and since it had rained while we were there the road was very difficult to get up and down. If you haven't hired a guide or driver you will have to have someone with 4wheel drive to get you up and down the mountain. To some extent the facility was in dis-repair --don't lean on the railings at all. Beware-- in 2009 all alchohol was baned in the area and even thou the resort indicated they have a full bar they have nothing-- there is no alchohol in the area. I would certainly recommend a visit to the area but would not recommend Baliem Valley Resort if you want to be close to town. I am sure when it was built it was really nice but seems to have fallen on hard times do to lack of business. The people working there were very nice and made us feel welcome. We were the only 4 people staying there for the entire week.

I have been living more than 12 years in Asia, 4 years in Indonesia and my
colleague 6 years and we have never felt so rip-off !
Your property, the Baliem Valey Resort is just a joke. When we arrive at
the airport the driver was at the gas station so we have to wait 20 minutes
then we drive to this dead place where no staff was waiting for us. What
kind of service are you providing to customer when you are charging such a
high amount of prices ? No staff around, kitchen hygiene is not existing,
maintenance is very poor, no facilities, no beverage for sale such as
mineral water and soft drinks, no a la carte menu for extra meals when we
hungry, nothing at all...
Ika your representative has not been to the resort since May 2010 and we are
in July 2010 but I believe that yourself have absolutely no idea of what is
happening in this place as you have not been in Papua for several months.
I understand now better why you are asking for full deposit in advance on a
bank account in Germany !
This entire experience was just a rip-off which should be shared to the
industry people.

We just returned from a wonderful visit to Papua and stayed at the Baliem Valley Resort. The property is on a lovely mountain with panoramic views and patio from each room. The setting was lovely. Please be aware that the resort is very isolated and once in the resort, there was nothing around it. To get into the town, or go anywhere at all, we had to book a driver and the charge was $90 a day to take us somewhere. The hotel wants guests to book tours through them so if you are using just the hotel, they will not be cooperative in helping you with transportation. For example, since we did not book a tour with them, they would not take us to the airport and we had to hire a driver and pay $50 to get to the airport. In additon to being isolated, the meals were not very good. Breakfast was eggs and toast every morning and dinners (charges extra) were not very good at all and over priced. There was a fried banana snack with coffee or tea in the afternoon and this was very tastey. The hotel has a generator operating from 5-10 PM, but flashlights are needed since it is so dark there. We read about the jacuzzi and pool, but it was not open (where was it) in August 2008. All in all, due to the isolation, outrageoius charge to go anywhere, I would not stay here again.

  • Liked — surrounding beauty of area
  • Disliked — isolation, lack of transport provided to go anywhere, few ammenities, food not good,
