First, what's good about this place: it's set on a gorgeous, fine sand beach that is totally private. The waves are perfect for body surfing and boogie boarding. There doesn't seem to be an undertow to worry about. They have a turtle protection program, so we got to see baby Olive Ridleys being released into the ocean. The food is excellent, gourmet French meals prepared by a delightful Parisian chef. But it was quite expensive, keep reading.

OK, here's what's bad: as other reviewers have said, it's a bit of a ghost town: for our three night stay, we were the only ones there for two of the nights. It's great for privacy, etc., but does create a strange atmosphere to have more staff than guests. Also, both the food and accommodations are overpriced. As a family of 5, we were spending $330 a night for bed and breakfast. Not so much for a luxury resort in the States, but a lot for Nicaragua. We had just come from a couple of different eco-lodges in the rest of Nicaragua where we were paying a quarter of that for comparable accommodations (but no private beach). So the contrast was striking. And despite the efforts of the owners and staff, there are too many problems for this to have true luxury status: no hot water, ineffective mosquito netting, poor pathways to the beach, rooms not cleaned every day, etc. We took advantage of the horse rental that was included in the price, but the horses were half asleep and wouldn't budge except to go home. And although the French food is excellent, we were shocked that lunches were $25 per person, unless you ordered off the kids menu (which we did). So, in short, although we had a great stay here, there were problems, and we wouldn't be able to recommend it fully unless the prices came down dramatically.

Dear Traveler,
Thank you for taking your time to write a report about our resort.
As you could check during your trip to Nicaragua, our country is still a destination off the beaten path. This means that we are still working hard to place our country on the touristic map. I must honestly admit that at Punta Teonoste, we are making enormous marketing efforts for guests to get to know us. One of the real “disadvantages” is being located about 3 hours away from Managua, where our guests must hire or rent a private 4x4 (dirt road) transfer to be able to reach our resort. This not only increases costs for them, but also makes it less accessible to reach us by anyone. On the other side, we hope our visitors take advantage of such a beautiful and great place, and enjoy such a gem, far away from crowded beaches. We believe this to be a real luxury, which people should come and discover, before it gets crowded like any other great beach so close to developed civilization.
Our French restaurant specializes in meals prepared with mainly fresh and first class imported products for the preparations. We must bring ourselves most of the products from Managua, since there are no large local communities near where we can get our supplies. We are glad you enjoyed our children’s menu. However, we do believe it is a pity you didn’t give a try to our gourmet French experience.
Best regards,
PUNTA TEONOSTE Administration

We were SHOCKED by the cost of breakfast at this place! One very small bowl of granola with a few pieces of bread, 2 cups of coffee and one bloody mary cost $30 US!! We were the only patrons in this large restaurant and when we got the check we realized why. Plus the place is like a ghost town; there were no guests staying there that we could see and the palapas are definitely in need of re-thatching. Looks like the place has fallen on hard times. The beach is stunningly beautiful, and we were the only ones on it...

$100 a night for each person . . . the beach is gorgeous and the open air lobby is neat. Beyond that, it's not worth $40 each. Rooms might have been nice in the 1980s, but no updates since them. Bugs and hornets galore - not just because it's a tropical environment but because the rooms aren't used very frequently. The locks were rusted and difficult to close; had anyone else been there we might have been worried about our stuff. But we could have dealt with all of that if the restaurant had been acceptable. Instead, my boyfriend called it "a travesty." Overpriced (3 times what you'd pay elsewhere) and out of a can . . . you read reviews about the French culinary genius in the kitchen but I had a crepe (cheapest thing on the menu at $8) with canned mushrooms. My boyfriend got cubed ham. Both were barely edible, covered in a pound of cream sauce. I get better food at my grandmother's nursing home!

Punta Teonoste is magical. Far away from Managua's messy and stressful urbanization, a resort to enjoy with friends or partner or both!!!. After a wonderful dinner with chef brought from heaven (she will make sure herself that you are pleased with the food, which is very refined), we had drinks watching full moon around the pool, slept hearing the waves and had a variety of activities in the morning: the horse riding to explore the area is fantastic. Also try massages and temascal, everything is done at to steps from the sea. Tropical drinks are awesome, try drinking pina colada sitting in one of the beds close to the pool watching the sunset. Also, freeing turtles from their preservation reserve made the experience even more memorable, it's a place to feel nature in it's best sources. Staff is very friendly and proactive, something very rare in Nicaragua!
Best holidays ever.

A truly unbelievable location for the price! For about $100/night we had a private 2 story hut on the beach! The other guests were on the other side of the resort which is big enough that you never had to cross paths. The lodging was a hut (i.e. shutters only, no AC, thatched roof, etc) including a bathroom that was outside but walled to make it private. No hot water but not an issue in the hot, humid climate. In the night, you slept under bug net which was a little uncomfortable but the sound of ocean waves beating on the beach outside more than made up for it. On the beach, you had thousands of tiny crabs that would scatter and burrow into the sand as you walked towards them [Please note that the waters are not “crystal clear” and the beach does not contain “pink and white” sands - think brown sand and regular ocean waters]. It was also not unusual to cross paths with horses and cows (non-threatening) on the property which actually made the experience all that much more unique. The central lodge was a large open dwelling where you could lounge on sofas and chairs. This was also where meals were served. Breakfast was included in the rate but dinners were not which added ~$50/night but worth it as the meals were amazing. Also, there are no alternative dining options and no other location in the near vicinity. The one recommendation I would make to anyone planning on going is to either have the resort pick you up (extra charge – unknown price) at the hotel or rent a 4x4 with GPS as locating the resort was an adventure that will be remembered for a lifetime. The roads are dirt roads that are unmarked and treacherous. There are no bridges so rivers need to be forded (i.e. driven through) which we were unprepared to do mentally or vehiculary especially in the dark of night. We rented a small Chevy Spark ($100/week) thinking it was a great deal unaware of the state of the roads in Nicaragua. Due to our vehicle state and road conditions we averaged about 5 MPH in traveling the ~10 miles you need to cover once you get off the main paved road. If you do decide to drive yourself, the trick to getting across the rivers, in addition to getting a bigger vehicle, is to drive straight through them at a good speed and stay to the middle of the road as they are only 2-3 feet deep. The one time (our first crossing) we did get stuck, the locals were very friendly (e.g. refused our payment) and helped us get out even though we spoke very limited Spanish. I hope we can make it back before word spreads and our private beach resort is private no more. A remarkable trip/adventure that will be remembered for a lifetime!

We went in November 2008 to Punta Teonoste in Nicaragua! The road was terrible so the taxidriver we hired had to stop half way.. So we maked a phone call at the reception of the hotel and they where picking us up without any problem and didn't had to pay for it.
When we entered the hotel it was so beautiful and the staff was very friendly..everything is so natural overthere..no television no internet it was great. So if you like nature and like to relax this is the place to be in Nicaragua. The food is expensive (like european prices) but oo so nice..i traveld to whole Nicaragua and never had a good meal like Punta Teonoste had..The bungalow is also very beautiful with an shower in the open air the only problem is at night there are a lot of mosquitos but that;s the thing if you sleep in a nature hotel at the beach. When we where there in November we where the only family in the hotel so we had 2km beach for us! So i recommend this place for people who love nature and relax and are not afraid of animals..When we are going back to Nicaragua i'm sure we will stay a few days in Punta Teonoste!
