“Unbelievable, if you can get there!”
Reviewed October 24, 2010

A truly unbelievable location for the price! For about $100/night we had a private 2 story hut on the beach! The other guests were on the other side of the resort which is big enough that you never had to cross paths. The lodging was a hut (i.e. shutters only, no AC, thatched roof, etc) including a bathroom that was outside but walled to make it private. No hot water but not an issue in the hot, humid climate. In the night, you slept under bug net which was a little uncomfortable but the sound of ocean waves beating on the beach outside more than made up for it. On the beach, you had thousands of tiny crabs that would scatter and burrow into the sand as you walked towards them [Please note that the waters are not “crystal clear” and the beach does not contain “pink and white” sands - think brown sand and regular ocean waters]. It was also not unusual to cross paths with horses and cows (non-threatening) on the property which actually made the experience all that much more unique. The central lodge was a large open dwelling where you could lounge on sofas and chairs. This was also where meals were served. Breakfast was included in the rate but dinners were not which added ~$50/night but worth it as the meals were amazing. Also, there are no alternative dining options and no other location in the near vicinity. The one recommendation I would make to anyone planning on going is to either have the resort pick you up (extra charge – unknown price) at the hotel or rent a 4x4 with GPS as locating the resort was an adventure that will be remembered for a lifetime. The roads are dirt roads that are unmarked and treacherous. There are no bridges so rivers need to be forded (i.e. driven through) which we were unprepared to do mentally or vehiculary especially in the dark of night. We rented a small Chevy Spark ($100/week) thinking it was a great deal unaware of the state of the roads in Nicaragua. Due to our vehicle state and road conditions we averaged about 5 MPH in traveling the ~10 miles you need to cover once you get off the main paved road. If you do decide to drive yourself, the trick to getting across the rivers, in addition to getting a bigger vehicle, is to drive straight through them at a good speed and stay to the middle of the road as they are only 2-3 feet deep. The one time (our first crossing) we did get stuck, the locals were very friendly (e.g. refused our payment) and helped us get out even though we spoke very limited Spanish. I hope we can make it back before word spreads and our private beach resort is private no more. A remarkable trip/adventure that will be remembered for a lifetime!

We went in November 2008 to Punta Teonoste in Nicaragua! The road was terrible so the taxidriver we hired had to stop half way.. So we maked a phone call at the reception of the hotel and they where picking us up without any problem and didn't had to pay for it.
When we entered the hotel it was so beautiful and the staff was very friendly..everything is so natural overthere..no television no internet it was great. So if you like nature and like to relax this is the place to be in Nicaragua. The food is expensive (like european prices) but oo so nice..i traveld to whole Nicaragua and never had a good meal like Punta Teonoste had..The bungalow is also very beautiful with an shower in the open air the only problem is at night there are a lot of mosquitos but that;s the thing if you sleep in a nature hotel at the beach. When we where there in November we where the only family in the hotel so we had 2km beach for us! So i recommend this place for people who love nature and relax and are not afraid of animals..When we are going back to Nicaragua i'm sure we will stay a few days in Punta Teonoste!

Once we arrive... we fall in love with the place, we stay in the Cardamomo villa and the atmosphere was perfect for a romantic and relaxing stay, the beach was just meters away our bungalow, we enjoy the sunset in the hammock.... uh it couldnt be better.! the staff is friendly and the attention was really nice, we felt so welcome....
Oh an the food..! so delicious we enjoy fresh fish dish from the french chef... and the best nicaraguan breakfast, with a delicous gallopinto, omelete and fresh season fruit....

No doubt this is an unforgettable experience... a Nicaraguan Paradise....!

I enjoyed an incredible two night stay at this amazing chic hotel right on the beach. I have stayed at very good beachfront hotels before but this one definitely left me with great memories and am sure to come back. The whole combination of arts and design comes together very nicely with the natural habitat. At the hotel you feel free to do whatever you want, whether it is to have a cocktail by the pool or in a hammock of your villa or enjoy among many recreation activities. I am also proud to say that I learned to surf at Punta Teonoste, it was definitely a great experience. The beach is very peaceful and it has white sand which is rare to find in beaches in Nicaragua. The villas are also spectacular as you can take a shower in a private outdoor bathroom linked to the villas. Another important thing to mention is the exceptional service by the staff and the first class cuisine offered in the restaurant. At night the hotel shines beautifully and bamboo torches set a cozy feeling as you can sit in the lounge area and enjoy a nice time with friends. Hope to come back soon and definitely for a longer stay.

My girlfriend and I stayed 3 nights at this beautiful unique place. Before our arrival we were somehow skeptic, because of some bad commets on Tripadvisor. However, this changed as sooon as we arrived. The place is magnificent! Service is te best! The food at the restuarant is pricey, but deliciuos, and worth each cent. The clubhouse presents a gorgeus stunning architecture. The villa is charming, and confortable. This is an ecofriendly resort, so there is no AA. The beach is the most beautiful we visited in Nicaragua. Definetly, a good bet!

A 3 hour drive from San Juan Del Sur on treacherous dirt roads leaves the traveler hopeful for the oasis that Punta Teonoste claims to be. Instead, the approach through the single-manned security station leads to an eerily quiet, white-washed compound of sorts. Remaining optimistic despite the intensely "odd vibe," we entered only to be welcomed by half-dozen staff members, none of whom spoke a word of English. There were no other guests booked at the hotel for the 3 nights we were there, and the reason for the dearth in co-dwellers became soon apparent. Our private villa had several disgusting-looking stains on the bed coverings, no hot water, and a broken cabinet door that blocked the main walkway. We peeked at the food menu for the on-site restaurant (literally the only option after being trapped in the compound and a 1+ hour remote drive to the nearest small town). The prices were insanely expensive, and the selection was very limited, and did we mention the fact that there are NO other options for meals at all. We quickly realized that this was not somewhere we wanted to stay at all, and especially not for the precious $200 we had planned for the "splurge" at the end of our hostel-focused vacation. Having been at this establishment for less than an hour, without using any services, we decided (based on the aforementioned issues and a general icky scary 'somethin's just not right' vibe) that it was time to leave. The owner, who was apparently onsite but unavailable for an unknown reason given the lack of other guests, gave us a very difficult time (through his innocent and unassuming Nicaraguan, limited English-speaking assistant, not more than 21 years of age). First insisted that we pay full price for the night, next he negotiated that we pay 1/2 price. We sat in 1 hour of awkward silence, watching the poor assistant answer mysterious phone calls, and make several brief trips to a closed room behind the reception desk, we were told that we would not be charged, but that the transportation they had arranged for us to get back to Granada was now, 1 hour later, surprisingly not available. Options: stay at dirty shady deserted establishment, pay for the night AND pay the hotel for transportation out of there, or arrange for and pay a private taxi. A reader who has come this far in the story will not be surprised that we chose the latter of the three. Because the hotel is so far away from the nearest city (Rivas), we waited for yet another awkward 2 hours for the cabbie to arrive. A wasted day and a really bad vibe. We recovered with a coupl'a Tona's and some comida typico in Granada.
