“Bad experience”
Reviewed June 27, 2013

We had a very bad experience. Upon our arrival we found out that the Golf and Beach Club near the cabins had been closed. We were supposed to walk about 1-1/2 km to the only restaurant near the reception area for our three meals. The girl who was at the reception made everything possible trying to obtain a golf cart so we could use but she had no success. We decided to leave.

My wife, daughter and daughter's friend stayed 8 nights @ the condos, the development about 300m from shore - http://bit.ly/10vaEyh (google maps link), three three-story condo buildings w/ a pool in-between. I think there's a bit of confusion here because there are the condos, the villas (near shore to the north of the Playa Colorados beach) and various VRBO etc private rentals.

I booked before reading reviews and would have done so had I read the negative reviews here. I'm glad I booked, glad I went. The facilities were good, everything that was promised, service was good, and the manager, Marcel Diaz, was very diligent about making sure we were treated right.

Our condo had everything we needed, good cooking facilities, good AC (it's *hot* there), working washer/dryer in the condo, bbq on the porch, everything attended to as we needed. Marcel went the extra mile for us --- my wife is a fantastic chef, but all provided cutlery was dull. I asked for a sharpening stone, and instead of providing one they took the knives, sharpened them and had them back in 1 hour. We needed a second key, they didn't have one so they changed the lock to one where they did have a spare. We had near daily cleaning service (mondays off, Easter holiday Good Friday off), great given the fast accumulation of sand and dust.

If you want a place to put surfboards etc securely, ask for a 2nd or 3rd floor condo. We had lots of toys and tossing them on the porch securely was grand.

I'd only fault the place for not being right on the shore, location is right on the golf course, nicely quiet and mellow, pool is excellent. The area doesn't have much shopping but you can get everything you need in Tola, 25 minutes away. There *aren't* many resources if you don't have a car, no convenient place to eat, etc. The area is gated so we felt very safe w/ two 16 yr old girls able to wander to the beach etc on their own. There is a 'beach club' space about a kilometer away at the south end of Playa Colorado with a pool and shaded verandah, nice place to hang. Internet was $20 for 15 days/2gb (used up in 3-5 days w/ two 16 yr olds). Water $3/5g jug of distilled drinking water. Otherwise pretty much everything included. They do a careful inventory on arrival and departure, charged us $5 for one broken wine glass, that was fair enough.

The surf is *really* good, consistent, and if the wind is too much, bring kiting gear and head over to Lago Nicaragua. We kited out of Lamar Lake Resort in perfect conditions, a very friendly but rather sad place that needs someone to start a kite school at. Kiting in the Pacific here would be dodgy, wind usually directly offshore or at least side offshore so dodgy unless you hire a boat support or are very very solid and not going it alone. For surf resources, there's a great shop, NSR, that rents gear (we brought our own, paid > $325 round trip for board luggage charges), arranges whatever you need (don't know how prices are).

My advice to you is to go, book, but also in case some of these negative reviews are legit, get in touch beforehand and make sure they know you are a discerning customer. I used skype to call Augusto Montealegre, had a good conversation, told him I had concerns about these negative reviews, wanted to walk away with a good review to write, and he promised me that all would be as promised, that we would be pleased, or they would give us our money back. They delivered as promised, and I'd go back.

Room Tip: If you want a place to put surfboards etc securely, ask for a 2nd or 3rd floor condo. We had lots of...

This place was absolutely amazing for vacationing! The condo we stayed in was nice, the front office rents out surf boards, boogie boards, fins, etc for reasonable prices, and the potential exploring seemed endless. There of course is a gulf course and a gorgeous beach but there are miles of cliffs and hiking to explore as well, which was my favorite part. It's pretty far out there and the hot shower possibilities were hit or miss, but this was such an amazing place to stay, it hardly mattered. Also the free wifi wasn't very good so don't rely on it for much.

The best ever over the Americas if you are thinking about spa, relax, surfing, enjoy beach and sun and golf. This is not an hotel and that is because you will be dissapointed if you are looking for finest service. There are not a deluxe restaurant, no a fitness center, but you will have internet. I think is the best in central america and caribean for relax. Come with your family. Come with your car o rent a car. Bing your basic meals in order to cook it or eat in the average restaurants. If you think in the best experience for relaxing come here. If you think in the best service go to a 5 star hotel (Granada or San Juan del Sur).

This place, hard to access is not what you want to see of Nicaragua.
They own the whole beach and it's all big condos American style.
You barely see Nica life around. Great beach, sure, but I do not recommend it. Do not go unless you absolutely want to surf Colorado.

We rented a GOLF CONDO and had a very similar experience to another reviewer- “worst service ever - rude administration- scam specialists”

It is important to note that the Golf Condos are a seperatly owned (Augusto Montelegre) and operated from the rest of the Hacienda Iguana Resort. Hacienda Iguana has beautiful homes and condos that are ocean front and professionally managed. Rent these, not golf condos!

During our stay we also met other travelers who were experiencing the same problems (w/ the Golf Condos) as Ana C. wrote in her review- washer and dryer promised and not provided, internet promised and not provided. We were promised a battery backup, which was not provided.

Our experience was summed up at check out; we were charged for items they said we broke, or were missing. They also attempted to refuse to return our security deposit! After literally three hours of a check out process I did get the secuity deposit (minus the absurd charges for missing or broken items).

During our stay we learned that the Golf Condos are known to be scammers. We were told that some of the golf condo units are owned independently, but the management will not inform the owners when their unit is rented and pocket the money. Please keep in mind this is hearsay, but from my experience wouldn't surprise me.

My wife and I stayed here for the entire month of March at Villas Iguana and are already making plans to go back next year. We made numerous connections with other renters onsite and everyone there was having a great time! I agree with Roslyn S from Nicaraguas reveiw. The property manager/unit you have make a HUGE difference in the quality of your stay. We also had Seth and Lindsey as our property managers and could not have been happier! Any small issue we had was taken care of right away by Seth. One has to remember this area is a littlle bit remote and you must purchase supplies or food in Managua or Rivas before arriving. We "supplied up" in Managua at the La Colonia which we highly recommend and went into Rivas once in a month for more, as you can purchase lobster, fish, fruits and vegetables locally and the vendors will deliver to your unit! Seth supplied us with the appropriate phone numbers. Don't count on the local "restuarant" and "sports bar" for food - see other reviews. The electricity also goes off now and again, along with the internet, but this is Nicaragua and one just needs to go with the flow. As far as surfing goes, I never found the surf "crowded" as per one reviewer, but this was March. One day at Pangas there were 15 people surfing, and they were spread out. Jack, who lives there and also owns a condo, commented that was quite busy for Pangas. Colorados was about the same, maybe 20 surfing, but spread out even more, so I never had an issue with a crowded lineup at Iguanas. This beach area at Iguana is also a great place for a walk, as at low tide, you can easily walk the 1.5 miles of beach. In closing, I highly recommend this area, as it is just a great place to live that healthy Nica lifestyle!
