“Modern hotel in beatiful bay near Palermo”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

The hotel is totally renovated as a modern hotel. The sea view is amazing- so ask a sea view room. But you can enjoy this view fromthe yard, the pool area and when strolling along the way down to the sea front line. It is located in Santa Flavia about 11 miles east to Palermo. It is popular hotel for higher level tourists groups. Being far from city center of Palermo is compensated by the tranquility and wonderful view of the bay. Enjoy this view early in the morning and in sunset while the village lights are shining and adding a pictureous stunning view of the bay. It is better to get with a rental car if you want to be independent and visit the big city center or external restaurants. The only disadvantage I found is dervied of its being populated with groups. You must come earlier to the restaurant before some of food items will vanish without sufficient replacement.

Room Tip: Sea view is an advantage. It is recomended to go down all the way to the sea front and enjoy additio...

Stayed for a week in May and have to say I wouldn't stay again.

The facilities are okay. The pool area and rooms are quite nice but it's just too noisy and our holiday was ruined because of this.

It appears that the hotel place corporate or large groups ahead of other guests as during our week long stay there were three events taking place, either weddings or corporate functions. On all nights this occurred the music and fireworks were going until about 1.30am, and as our room faced the pool area (where the functions were held) it meant that we could hear everything and couldn't sleep until it had finished. We even tried earplugs one night but these didn't work.

The hotel isn't in a fantastic location being on a busy main road with hardly any pavements. The towns of Santa Flavia and Porticello are within walking distance but it's not a pleasant walk and watch out for the rotting dead dog in one of the bushes! It would be nice perhaps if the hotel contributed to a clean-up of the area as they are the largest hotel in the area and it would improve the overall appearance.

Breakfasts were hit and miss but standard fare I suppose. It was dissapointing that there was no fruit juice available (only squash) and the pastries were a tad on the stale side. I wouldn't recommend the dinners as they are very bland and poor value. It is worth heading into the local villages for a much better and cheaper dinner

Room Tip: If they are having any functions during your stay I would ask for a room away from the pool area, al...

There is a lot that is good about this hotel but also a few significant failings. It is modern, clean and stylish. On first impressions it is beautifully located with stunning views across the grounds and bay. Unfortunately the reality is that the surrounding area is really rather squalid on closer examination. I know there was a refuse strike at the time but even cleaning that away would not change the basic working town nature of the area. There is no esplanade or coastal path so no really opportunity for a stroll as walking out would involve walking on local roads with some of the most manic drivers in Europe!
Back to the positives. Our room was comfortable, reasonably sized and well furnished in an elegant modern style. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom functional with a good rainfall shower. We found the breakfast to be of reasonable quality. I didn't like the scrambled eggs but there were also frankfurters, cold meats, cheese, four types of croissants, cakes, yoghurt, apples etc. I can't comment about the dinners as we ate out every evening. The excellent l'Ancorra was only 50 metres away and offered very good, reasonably priced meals. The Baia Fenice was only a little further in the opposite direction. The food was less good but the view was excellent.
For people who want a hotel based sunshine and pool holiday this would be an excellent hotel. The grounds are beautiful, with two excellent pools and good quality sun beds and parasols. It is also a good base for car based exploration of this part of the island (If you are brave enough to take to the roads. Driving standards are very scary at times!). Even getting to Etna and Taormina only took about two and a half hours. People without a car might be disappointed if they like to explore the local area.

The hotel is clean, the facilities are ok, but this place prioritises its corporate guests above anyone else. Most nights they have music blaring, I'm not exaggerating, till post 1am. The first night it was 2am Chinese wedding fireworks and I'm told tonight's Russian 'big group' will have music by the pool till 130am. Not relaxing at all.

The hotel itself is fantastic. The rooms are clean and modern, the pool areas are great and the views over the sea and santa flavia are hard to beat. As long as you stay in the hotel things are good. The prices at the bar leave a little to be desired (I thought 8euro for a Malibu and coke was a bit steep and 4euro for a local beer isn't great) and the Buffett at the restaurant is a little hit or miss. In saying that there is usually something for everyone and the waiters, whilst speaking no English whatsoever, are friendly and attentive. The poor breakfast is the main downfall of anything the hotel has to offer.

As for stepping out of the hotel there is little on offer. The hotel is in a really poor location. It is only a short walk to the train station but parts of it are along a busy road with no pavement. The parts that have pavement are strewn with rubbish (including a dead dog which we had to walk past everyday). We found santa flavia and porticello had little to offer. The area down to the left of the hotel is a little better with a few nice restaurants. Overall disappointed with sicily. Found everywhere we visited to be dirty and run down.

Thankfully the hotel was perfect for spending some relaxing time by the poolside.

The night time entertainment was poor and there was no real nightlife to speak of anywhere convenient to the hotel.

If you are looking for a relaxing retreat where you want to spend most of your time chilling out by a pool the I would recommend this hotel. If not then the location is awful and I would not recommend the hotel.

One thing I think the hotel could have done would be to have there own shuttle bus or courtesy car to bring people to and from the train station. Given the dangerous and dirty road that has to be negotiated! They do offer to arrange a taxi but he charges 10euro for literally a two minute drive which I thought was a bit steep!

Overall hotel itself was great. Pity about the location!

This hotel is modern, clean and friendly and If you like us will hire a car it's a very good choice of hotels. But please be aware, there is a €7 per day car parking charge which was never mentioned to us earlier. This was not the hotels fault, it was the travel agents.
The buffet dinners are not quite what we expected of such a nice hotel. Poor choice and a bit bland. Not the lush mamma Mia pizza and pasta I thought it would be. There are 2 restaurants close by which is ok for a lunchtime pizza, but about 1km away (or less) are more and much better restaurants.
If you decide to go into Palermo for the day, take the train!! Train station is only a few minutes from the hotel. But be aware, check train table with the reception as bank holidays are different over there.

The receptionists were very helpful. The rooms were spotless. The shower could do with a spot of mastic maintenance but that was all.
We had a lovely time.

This modern, clean and comfortable hotel has stunning views from most rooms and the two pools. But we found meal times to be a problem and we were starting to feel trapped – until we met Enzo!

Having booked a deal on TravelZoo we upgraded to a sea view in a ‘villa’ next to the sea and it was very comfortable. It was made up of two small adjoining rooms with one set up as a sofa and so we had two bathrooms and fridges. You could hear the sea rather than the piped music that played on-going by the pools which was a blessing. But it is a very steep walk to and from reception, especially with luggage.

The staff are friendly and professional, but service is an issue due as there doesn’t appear to be many of them. They are lacking concierge support at reception and a porter service. The hotel is really set up for conferences and there was one on for a couple of days during our stay and at this point the staff were really stretched.

The pools are lovely but very cold and the excellent gym was too hot for us to use.

The main restaurant is a cavernous room with no views at all. Breakfast is a depressing affair with a buffet selection of cakes, pastries, biscuits and breads (sometimes stale) all spread out to suggest choice. For the hot option there was a dish of scrambled egg but its quality depended on how long it had been sat out for and sometimes frankfurters or bacon. We learnt to ask for a fried egg early on and on the last day we also asked for bacon – we received a number of envious looks!

The only thing I looked forward to at breakfast was the Americano coffee from the coffee machine and it was much better than the jugs of coffee. Towards the end of our week the restaurant covered up the Americano button with a label ?? ,but I managed to peel it back each morning – top right button!

The hotel food is outsourced and the restaurant refused to deliver room service to our ‘villa’ due to the distance/incline (fantastic upgrade!). Fortunately the reception staff talked them into this but the tray charge was 15 Euros and the coffee was cold.

The hotel is cut off and a car would be useful, we were quoted 140 Euros for 2 days which seemed expensive to us. Fortunately we found Enzo who is a local taxi driver and rather than paying for a hire car we paid him to take us around. He has very limited English but does speak French and so with a little Franglaise and a lot of gesturing we got by. We had a day trip to Palermo to see the sites and spent another day in Cefalu.

There is a restaurant over the busy road and it is ok but nothing special, nb pizza is only available in the evening. The road has been mentioned in other reviews, please don’t under estimate how dangerous it is walking along this fast road, with parked cards and no pavement.

Enzo also took us out in the evenings to local restaurants and by the time we had included his 20 Euros fare the meal was about the same price as the hotel restaurant but the food and ambiance was SO much better. He also took us to a supermarket to stock up on drinks and snacks.

We recommend dinner in Porticello at Al Faro Verde which is a fish restaurant. If you go on Sunday evening they have a local market which gives you something to potter around.

We also enjoyed a couple of restaurants in Bagheria. Don Ciccio offers traditional Sicilian fayre and the pizza at La Frattoria di Totuccio is perfect. Also in Bagheria after the main meal Enzo took us to il Bacio Bar which is an AMAZING Italian Dessert/ Gelato store.

Day in Palermo
You can get a map from reception and look up the information before you go.
1. Cathedral of Monreale
2. Catacombes
3. Dropped off at the Palazzo dei Normanni & Capella Palatina and then we walked to the Cathedral and then past the Quatro Canti and the Fontana Pretoria to meet Enzo at the Plazza Marina (mobile was useful here)
4. Lunch at Mondello
5. Santuario di Santa Rosalia
6. Supermarket !

We enjoyed the day but there is so much to see in Palermo and we are not suggesting this is as the optimum plan and please note that Enzo does not speak enough English to act as a guide. There is no way we would have managed all this in a day if we had used our own hire car because of the traffic, parking and one way systems.
Our highlights were the Capella Palatina, Monreale Cathederal and the Santuario di Santa Rosalia.

Cefalu is very picturesque and well worth a trip - make sure you eat at one of the restaurants on most northerly street, the Via Ortolani di Bordonaro, as they have terraces built over the crashing waves.

Enzo is an elderly gentleman and you can often find him outside the front hotel gate in his mid-blue Astra +39 33982 92073

NB try to organise your transfer to the hotel ahead of time as we have heard and read of a number of problems with there being no taxis available at the airport or train station.
