“Kasawari Lembeh Resort- 5star dive resort”
Reviewed October 13, 2010

If you want to go to possibly the finest 5star dive resort (at reasonable rates), and see the rarest of the rare underwater critters, try Kasawari-Lembeh Resort. The dive guides are incredible with what they find. Guests get a large cottage with a great bathroom. The western & Asian style food is excellent. The entire resort staff are extremely conscientious and super friendly. It's like being at home with friends.. I will come back here again soon.

For super Scuba diving, this is a premium resort: the dive masters, lodging and facilities are the best I have encountered in 40 years of around the world diving. The ocean creatures are small, and the muck diving is super, wonderful macro photographic opportunities
Next month I plan to return there for my tenth visit and stay there for 3 weeks

I spent a weekend at Kasawari Lembeh Resort with my man and 2 friends.
The resort with its gardens, infinity pool and 10 cottages is beautiful and the staff is very friendly and speaks good English.

From the restaurant and garden you have a nice seaview and the resort is placed very close to a lot of dive sites...you simply walk from the dock to the boat, sail for a while (sometimes only 2-5 minutes) and jump in the water straight from the boat. The downside of the location is that it's very close to town/private houses which means that loud music, animals, cars etc. can sometimes disturb the peace.

The cottages are well equipped with indoor + outdoor showers, towels, nice beds, tv and dvd player, porch, a/c, fruit basket, shampoo, lotion etc...all you can dream of really!
The restaurant has an impressive menu and you're asked to choose up to 3 course lunch and dinner! Some of the food was delicious, others nothing special.

The reason for going to Lembeh was diving, and the diving was great: not because of beautiful corals or walls but due to very strange, beautiful and interesting marine life!

On just 4 dives we saw 2 x octopus, 2 x seahorse, several cuttlefish, some stuff that I haven't even found in marine life books etc etc. The dive guides from Kasawari were friendly and very good at spotting things - and the rental equipment + diving facilities was superb! However as pretty new divers without dive computers and used to some guide attention we felt a bit on our own. Also some of the dives felt a bit stressful as 5-6 divers + 2 guides went in as one big group which meant that there was some confusion regarding where you were going and who was trying to attract your attention (it may be that it's just the way muck diving is compared to wall diving)...

I recommend the Kasawari because of friendly staff, beautiful well-equipped cottages and interesting dive sites!

Kasawari is in general a very nice place. That was my very first trip to Lember straits but now I can compare it to KBR and hopefully soon will also add a comparison review of Lembeh Resort. Those three are considered "the best and the most expensive hotels of the straits". Kasawari is actually the most expensive, correct me if I'm wrong

Positives
The villas are wonderful, spacious, new and comfortable. I specifically liked the open air shower and the terrace with a sofa on it. There is no beach that you can access from the hotel, but c'mon why would you want a beach there? If you want to sunbath you can do that in the area around the pool. Yes, there is a pool nice enough to swim in, it's quite big and clean comparing to the one at KBR, the latter didn't look very appealing.
As to the dive guides, some of them are good, others are just ok, but the senior dive guide Ali is absolutely fantastic not only as a guide but also as a great assistant for your UW photography. Make sure you dive with him or Kasawari just isn't worth the money :)
The other positive thing about Kasawari is it's dive boats, they are much more convenient than those other resorts have. They provide much more room for each diver, you can enter the water by giant step, not rolling back as you'd have to do diving from KBR boats, you're protected from wind on your way back etc. And you can get back on board in full gear which would be very hard to do with KBR boats. And this does matter if you dive sites like California Dreaming or Angel's Window where the sea can be a bit rough.

Negatives
I didn't like the food there. Sometimes when they had more guests it was buffet style and the selection and quality of food wasn't I think good enough. When there were only two of us at the resort, they did it a-la-carte, the portions were small then and food sometimes was below average. I did feel hungry sometimes. Hope this has changed since the time I was there.
The other thing I didn't enjoy was a neighbouring village which was situated right outside the Kasawari fence, so you actually could watch it's life sitting in the open air restaurant. I wouldn't have been bothered with that, hadn't the locals have a habit of listening to Indonesian pop music as early as at 5 a.m. (I think that was at 5 a.m., could be a bit later but I still was in bed when they turned on their stereos). And man, that was loud indeed! Those people, the local fishermen have those huge 2 meter tall floor standing speakers in front of their houses :) Unfortunately I think the only solution would be to relocate the whole village which the resort management isn't likely able to do.

And well, they have no bar and don't seem to have drinks other than local beer so bring your favourite liquors with you.

Anyway, if you can tolerate average food (but I really do hope this aspect has been improved cause I'm planning to be back to Kasawari in September and I love to be fed well) and loud Indonesian pop-music for a week, then Kasawari is definitely the place to be. The cottages are very nice, diving is managed well and Ali is a wonderful guide, so you WILL enjoy it. Remember, we come to Lembeh straits for diving.
