Black Sand Dive Retreat
Ranked #5 of 15 Specialty Lodging in Bitung
Reviewed July 21, 2010

We stayed at Black Sands for a bit more than a week, which gave us ample of time to dive all the best dive locations in the Lembeh area. We particularly appreciated the easiness of diving, i.e., boats were excellent, short distances, very small groups and knowledgeable dive guides. Also night dives were superb. The resort itself felt very secluded and comfortable. The staff pampered us and the food varied and of good standard. We recommend this place to all divers who appreciate easy diving and the muck diving opportunities in Lembeh.

I spent 10 delightful days with Bruce and Fong at the Black Sand Dive Resort. They go out of their way to make sure that guests are comfortable and well fed. Bruce and the dive guides really do know the many dive sights revealing the wonders of Lembeh. Rooms are spotless and and comfortable. Meals are varied and delicious. Its the extra personalized service that makes Black Sand a special experience, from organizing local tours to picking up things for guests in Bitung. I highly recommend this place.

We were lucky enough to be recommended this dive resort, it was a great find.
Kambahu Bay is right in the middle of Lembeh's best dive sites. The resort has three fast four man boats which take you to most of the drops within 5 minutes. You are then able to return for your surface interval enjoy a hot shower and a coffee how civilized is that! The guides Hengki and Atu were fantastic at finding all the tiny critters we had hoped to see. The brilliant house reef is conveniently sited just off the black sand beach next to the dive school.
Bruce and Fung's years of experience in the Lembeh area really shows with all the thoughtful touches in this quality resort and dive centre. The staff are all keen to provide you with a personalised service.
The well designed retreat is only two years old. The six rooms are all detached and set in very spacious gardens with views over the Lembeh Straight. The rooms are spacious and airy with great walk in wardrobes and the Balinese style bathrooms are amazing.
Bruce has planted many beautiful plants which will provide a stunning garden when they have matured.

New land based dive resort in the Lembeh strait.
Spent 5 days here diving with Henky and Bruce. Came with a difficult wish list of critters i wanted to see, including pearl fish, coral cat sharks and hairy octopus. Came up trumps on everything except the harlequin shrimps- but a good reason to come back. The diving was catered to the individual, and the guides were excellent, not only at finding critters but also at assessing the ability and needs of the guests and protecting the environment. The food was good but not sensational and the accomodation was roomy and well presented with great bathrooms.
The gardens were nicely laid out and given time to bed in will be stunning. The resort area is very large, and the facilities are nicely spaced out. I expected mosquitos to be an issue and was very pleasantly surprised to find very few. Far, far less than on Bunaken island or in manado.
The staff were friendly, as were the local villagers who invited me to play football with them during a local competition.
Had a great stay and will return as soon as possible.
Quite possible the best house reef (or should i say- house SAND) i have dived on, especially at night.
