Located deep inside the jungle of Bukit Lawang’s national park and covered with outgrow trees and forest plantations, the Batcave is one of the best attractions and a good challenge for visitors in Bukit Lawang. The cave was formed million of years ago and contained 3 separated chambers with large, heavy boulders and home to many of Indonesia’s bat species who dominated the place. During the duration of exploring the cave, it is quite difficult to travels alone because there are narrow paths, dark atmosphere, dead-ends, and the cave’s bed is very slippery. Therefore, I highly recommended that visitors should explore the Batcave with a tour guide. It is also worth it to explore thoroughly all the 3 chambers because each has its own level of challenges and you will see fascinating rock arrangement into unique formations as well as exotic insects and bats.

It is nice walk to the cave and you do not need a guide. Bukit Lawang is beautiful place and so is Bat cave. It is quite big, you need a torch and if not scared, discover it on your own. There is a small fee (5000 or 1000, do not remember) and guy at the entrance offered me to accompany me but I said no. I was lucky to meet a friend inside, otherwise I would probably return. There are beautiful rooms with bats and definitely worth visiting.

Then this is a good place as any to see them.
I didn't go because I hate really dark places but my husband went and saw lots of bats.
Before the entrance to the bat caves 2 guys hang around (maybe they're government men, who knows) and tell you you have to pay around 50 000 rupiahs to see the caves with a guide. You don't.
But we did end up paying 10 000 rupiahs... maybe it's for the path upkeep? mmmm ....

It was about a half an hour walk from the village and totally worth it. We explored it without a guide and would recommend doing it that way if you are confident on your feet. We made it through all three chambers and didn't find it was any problem to do it on your own as long as you have a half decent flashlight. The ceiling has caved in in parts allowing for some beautiful contrasts between the cave and the forest.
