It was about a half an hour walk from the village and totally worth it. We explored it without a guide and would recommend doing it that way if you are confident on your feet. We made it through all three chambers and didn't find it was any problem to do it on your own as long as you have a half decent flashlight. The ceiling has caved in in parts allowing for some beautiful contrasts between the cave and the forest.

A nice walk through the plantation along the river from the town (some pretty little local huts) then up a hill to the bat cave. They charge 5000RP entry but also heavily try to make you take a guide (you don't need one).
The cave itself has a large main chamber then at the back of the main chamber on the right hand side is a small crawl space that leads to another bat filled cave (this is the one they say is hard to find so take a guide...It's not though!).
Take care as its quite slippery underfoot in the cave and take a good torch as once round the corner there is no natural light.

The walk to/from the cave and visiting the cave might kill a morning or afternoon in BL.
I did that in the morning then the Orangutang feeding in the afternoon session.

Not the easiest place to get into as you can see from my photos, but well worth the climb as it is beautiful inside and we saw bats!

I love the bat cave - its like being Indiana Jones' sidekick Lovely walk from the village, quite an interesting entrance way and stunning caverns that seem to go on and on Make sure you have good footwear and a headtorch Kids will love scrambling over the boulders and the bats are just beautiful We also saw some amazing creatures like tiny colourless lobsters and cave spiders. Take one of the guides from Bukit Lawang or if youre brave do it yourself
