“Close to the Jungle”
Reviewed August 14, 2012

Bare bones accommodations, right on the river. Much more rustic than other nearby places. No towels. No sink. No flush toilet. No toilet paper. No hot water. One small thin blanket. However, it’s right on the river, it’s a 5 minute walk to Gunung Leuser National Park, the staff is extremely friendly and the food is very good. There are electric outlets in the room for charging your electronics (when the electricity is on). If you’re in Bukit Lawang for the jungle trek (and why else would you be here?) staying at Indra is as close to camping out in the jungle as you can get without actually sleeping outside. We paid about $10/night.

Indra is run by Obiwan and his friends and various family members which gives it a very laid back friendly feel. The Inn is a stones throw to the river and a 2 minute walk to the Gunung Leuser National Park where the twice daily orangutan feedings take place. We stayed in the top floor room which was clean and comfortable.

While at Indra we went on an overnight jungle trek which was lead by Dedi and his uncle both of whom are close with Obiwan (Dedi actually lives next door I believe). The trek was awesome and I have to say Dedi and his uncle know the trails like the back of their hand. While we overheard other tourists complain that they spent too much time bunched together with other groups, we barely ran into anyone and it felt much like a private jungle tour. Overall we saw 12 Orangutans and trekked for 6 hours or so after leaving the feeding plaltform. We had lunch at a waterfall and were fed very well throughout the trip. Top notch.

Room Tip: On the weekends, the locals come to Bukit Lawang to kick back. If your there on a weekend in the sum...

Stayed here for 2 nights and enjoyed my stay. About 10 minutes walk from the drop off point in Bukit Lawang. The room is basic, but bed is comfortable with mosquito net and it cools down nicely in the evening so I had a very good sleep, even without a fan. You also get a balcony with bench and hammock while watching everybody tube by on the river. Very nice.

Did not book a tour with Obiwan itself since its a bit pricier then a normal price. Did hear positive stories about him though, so if you are willing to spend a bit more, I am sure it is a good tour. My cheaper tour was very nice as well though, spotted about 10 Orang-oetangs.

People here are friendly and the food is excellent and well priced, the peanut sauce reminded me of the taste in the Netherlands :) So very good :) Can recommend to stay here.

In a village now filled with accommodation owned by Western or Medan based businessmen; Indra Valley is a rarity given that Obi and his family are from Bukit Lawang originally. This gives you an up close view of how passionate Obi and his team are about the forest and the wildlife living there.

Added to this Indra Valley location is stunning right on the river across from the National Park, waking up to a rushing river on your doorstep is just one of the highlights! The accommodation is basic but extremely comfortable and perhaps one of the best nights sleep of our six month trip. The menu is extensive and well priced so you won't go hungry!

As for the trek, we went in hunt of Orang-utans and the guides didn't disappoint, with seven spotted in one day we were fortunate in comparison to others, this down to the guides talents I'm pretty sure... If you have the time, don't discount the rafting downstream with the 'Captain' which gives you a startling insight into the change from jungle to palm fields outside of Bukit Lawang...

Overall, if you're thinking about a stay in Bukit Lawang let Obi's team make the trip easy from start to finish.

Out of all the places we stayed on our trip, which included five islands and probably a dozen hotels, the Indra Valley Inn was the best we stayed in. We loved the room upstairs and the general feel of the downstairs restaurant bar area was fantastic. The evening meal was wonderful, despite the power going out due to a storm. Obiwan checks on the guests regularly to make sure everything is okay. After an afternoon of trekking in 35 degree heat, the whitewater river flowing past the back of the Inn was excellent to cool off in. Ask Obiwan to teach you how to "river surf". The locals will probably hassle you to try it if they catch you watching. A great experience. We are planning a second Indo trip and will definately be back at Indra Valley again, this time for a much longer stay. Thanks to all at Indra Valley.

I stayed at the Indra Valley for 3 nights. I was very satisfied with the room and overall vibe of the accommodation. Another attraction is that the Indra Valley is Indonesian- owned which contributes directly to the economic well-being of local people. The accommodation and meals were also reasonably priced.

I visited the bat-cave with a guide from the Indra Valley. I highly recommend this as a secondary activity.

The full- day trek which I also did, I found quite hard- going at times. There are lots of very steep climbs and descents. This is maybe to be expected but be aware! We did have fairly frequent breaks though which helped. At the end of the trek we did the tubing back to the inn which was a great deal of fun.

The only minor criticism (If I have one) is that the trek was quite expensive at 500,000 Rupees. I think there may be more competitive rates (ie. cheaper) out there for a day trek.

Room Tip: The double room I stayed in had a hammock on the verandah (good for a snooze after a long day trekki...
