My parents (both 64 year old) and I have just toured Bukit Lawang, Gunung Sibayak and Lake Toba with Expedition Jungle. I would like to thank Clare for her timely reply to my questions and her planning for our trip such that we had the trekking we wanted that was also suitable for my elderly parents. I asked many questions but she replied each of them clearly and in a friendly way, especially regarding my budget. I also like to thank her team for our trekking in bat cave (it was tough for us but it was so so much fun overcome the challenge with the help of the guide Selamat) and the wonderful BBQ they prepared. Erwin also was a wonderful guide who brought us around for both trekking and market tour and cultural immersion. He was very friendly so don't be shy to talk. The driver also kept the car clean all the time and drive very steadily. It was a wonderful trip for me and a memorable one. Thanks

We signed up with Expedition jungle to do a 5 day, 4 night orangutan and elephant tour. Clare was really responsive and very helpful in all aspects of booking this trip.
We wanted to avoid any hassle associated with organising these tours once we arrived - as we were on honeymoon, and for that we paid a much higher price than organising independently, BUT we also got Yetno, a wonderful local guide, and a unique 5 days in Sumatra.
High points were of course seeing Orangutans at such close range, really amazing to see, seeing the Sumatran elephants, and staying somewhere beautiful and off the beaten track in Tangkahan. Other highlights were the journey by jeep that took us through local villages, stopping to see a traditional wedding, and learning so much about local life in Sumatra from Yetno. The food was also fantastic, our riverside jungle dinner included fresh fish, and several other very local dishes which we absolutely loved trying. Yetno also made sure we got to try local snacks along the way - which really made our day.
Challenging points were - sleeping in the jungle meant sleeping on rocks, something we would have liked some more warning about and we would have bought something to sleep on other than our rolled up t-shirts! Toilets, when not using a spot behind a tree in the jungle, were more often than not Indonesian, hole in the ground toilets (fine, but also helpful to have been forewarned).
One thing to note is that we felt this could have been a shorter tour, perhaps making the night in the jungle optional, and/or moving on to Tangkahan earlier.

We contacted Clare initially in October of last year to arrange a 2 night stay in Bukit Lawang and from the first instance her service was attentive and professional - nothing was too much trouble. She answered the numerous questions we had quickly and the cost was very reasonable.

We were met at Medan airport by our guide and driver and without any delay on the road to our hotel - the Jungle Inn (separate review to follow). The drivers supplied both ways were very good and never once did I feel unsafe, something which I have experienced in the past.

Once two very helpful young men carried our heavy cases along the 20 minutes track to the hotel, we settled down to explore the village and the local area.

The following morning our guide arrived promptly and we began our trek up the hill to see the beautiful Orang-utans, which were stunning and after that a trip to the bat cave, which was also good.

The evening was spent in the Jungle inn, where the locals engaged to friendly banter.

In the morning the guide and driver took us back to Medan, where we said our goodbyes.

Clare gave us what we asked for, as we did not want to go deeper into the jungle and she tailored our needs to make it a truly enjoyable experience. Thanks again for all yours help.

We booked the 9 day wild orangutan and tiger trek by e mail with Clare. She is very informative and replied quickly. Our guide Edy picked us up from the airport and took us to Bukit Lawang to stay in our nice accommodation. On the1st day we trekked to the orangutan feeding platform and saw 4 orangutans, we then did a practice trek through the jungle back to Bukit Lawang. The afternoon was spent in the village where we also bought some rivers shoes.

Edy met us the next day to begin out jungle trek. The trekking is either in the jungle, some can be quite hilly, or in the river. The walking can be hard and you get hot and sticky but it completely manageable if you have decent fitness. We met our 3 assistant guides, Agus, Dani and Sugi who always welcomed us into camp with tea and biscuits.

Camp is a highlight of the trip. The guides are very interactive and entertain with card games and singing. The food is excellent and you can try some jungle food. Camp is always by a river so you can wash and feel refreshed in the evening. The sleeping tent is very basic but comely adequate.

The longer trip allows you deep not the jungle. We saw wild orangutans, gibbons, hornbills, leaf monkeys and monitor lizards. We never saw another tourist after camp 1. The deep jungle is denser and louder and you get to experience a lot more than on a shorter trip.

On the final day we tubes back to Bukit Lawang and had dinner and beer with our new friends, the guides.

This trip is highly recommended, we definitely hope to be back!

Don't look any further. Go with these guys. They are the best. Clare Rambe is awesome. Could ask her any question, allways quick response. Very responsable guide(Kinul, you are the best). Only company that provides lifevests for rafting ( and boy, did we need them). Very good new destination in Besitang.
