“Lovely hideaway in the jungle”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2014 via mobile

We stayed in the orangutan rooms which were booked through sunatra Eco travel who we booked our tour through. A lovely retreat whilst staying in the jungle. Beautiful rooms with fans and unique outside bathrooms. Very clean and good food. Lovely staff.
No air con but I don't think there is anywhere in bukit lawang- it's the jungle after all.

This isn't the Ritz Carlton. There are no iPod docks, mood lighting or 1,000 thread count sheets. This is lodging on the edge of the Sumatran jungle. And reviews of this property should be based on that fact. There is no TV or Wifi, but the bed is comfortable. Our room was clean, although it got muddy after trekking. The high ceilings and open air bathrooms (cold shower only) made this room seem enormous. I expected very little when I checked in here, but was delighted with what I saw. Make sure you go to the Bat Cave, about 2km away and hire the local guides there. Orangutan trekking is superb, but don't expect much by just hanging around the feeding platform. Again, hire a guide, get into the jungle and dedicate some time to seeing the animals in their natural environment. And bring your own snacks and drinks, there is very limited selection here, and it's pricey. But great place to stay for a few days.

We stayed here for a few days, in the orangutan and butterfly cottages. First room had a tree in the bathroom! cold showers. We heard from another couple about a cockroachplague in their (butterfly)room but didn't see any ourselfves. Beautifull place with many (Thomas leaf?) monkeys. Just across one of the bridges. Special thanks to our guide in the jungle, Anuar! The orangutantrip was amazing, and the nearby batcaves are certanly worth a visit.

We stayed here for three nights on a trip booked through Eco travel. The trip was well organised with great guides and transfers, however the eco lodge was a disappointment. It has a great position and gardens but the rooms and buildings are tired and scruffy. Our room wasn't cleaned during our stay, although there seemed to lots of staff doing very little. Our shower was cold water only and the bathroom was part outside, which was a little bizarre. The breakfast and other food was very poor. I got the impression that the placed lacked decent management. I would have rated this place poor, but it is in the jungle!

We stayed with our 2 teenage daughters in the Orangutan Room. Ample room for all of us. Accommodation is basic but clean.we had our own bathroom but no hot water. We weren't able to get any laundry done - smelly jungle clothes as they wash no washing machines or dryers, but this was only minor and made me appreciate the rest of the place. Even more. Breakfast was basic but adequate. We ate in the restaurant a couple of times and found the food to be as good as anything else we had in Asia.

We loved Bukit Lawang. The people are wonderful, the lifestyle very basic but everyone was friendly, welcoming and happy. Accommodation options are limited in Bukit Lawang; this facility was provided as part of a tour we booked. And overall, we were happy. The room was basic but clean and staff accommodation. The hot water on semi-worked, and the bathroom in our room was interesting to say the least with the occasional gecko making an appearance. Don't expect too much; after all your are fairly deep in the Sumatran jungle. It's an experience, and very different by western standards. Embrace the culture, the experience and make the most of your stay in this wonderful part of Indonesia. Breakfast was provided; it was interesting but again we weren't expecting a massive American breakfast so enjoyed the fresh fruit, juice and toast with tea and condensed milk. We ate at the hotel on the first night, but choose another local restaurant for our second night on the basis that the menu at the Eco Lodge was limited and several things on the menu weren't available on our first night. Would we stay again? Probably not, but only because we like different experiences.

Room Tip: Monkeys in the trees above or chooks on the grass outside may wake you early; get up and explore the...

There are not many choices of hotels in Bukit Lawang. The hotel has a potential, but our opinion is that the management should work more with the staff in training, and especially how to face complaints and problems that guests have.

First I would like to say that the rooms we got in our second night (Orangotang rooms) was excellent. The staff is friendly, but maybe a bit inexperienced.

Our first room was litterally infested by cockroaches After killing them all and having a sort of night sleep, we complained to the hotel reception. When we returned to the room, it had not been cleaned and we still had problems with cockroaches. After saying that we wanted a new room, they finally moved us. The new room was fantastic and clean, we had no problems at all there. Aparently, the first room was infested by cockroaches. So my issue here was that the management did not know how to face my questions and complaint.

The rest of our stay was fine. The food in the hotel, as other guests say, is just ok, but the food in the village is much better. The hotel should work a bit with this issue.

We completely understand that international travel industry is relatively new in Bukit Lawang. The hotel has great potential. It lays litterally by the forest, and it is a great start for the journey in the region.

Room Tip: Choose the orangotang rooms, not the thomas monkey rooms.
