“Delightful, peaceful, friendly, ocean hideaway”
Reviewed April 30, 2014 via mobile

We are celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary and chose Alma as our first stop. The property is one of the most picturesque spots we have seen. The architectural design is vibrant and very attractive. A lot of thought went into the design of layout and the rooms. The room we had (villa 2) was absolutely delightful. While laying in bed you have a full view of waves breaking on the beach. Not the typical ocean front view from your bed. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Freddy is a lot of fun, full of character and a desire to make it right and the best. We had one of the best massages ever, a deep tissue for 90 minutes. Barry, one of the owners is most pleasant and dedicated to making this a fantastic and relaxing vacation. Be sure and introduce yourself to the mystery guest Charlie.

This was me an my husband's third stop in Costa Rica. We overall found this resort to be delightful. It was small and not filled at the time that we were there. The rooms are beautiful with bright colors, enormous windows everywhere with natural light and the shower was delightful. The mattresses were average in quality. Our room was ocean front which I highly recommend. This style of room puts you steps away from the beach and has a lovely patio for your enjoyment. The beach was clean, black sand, and we walked about an hour in each direction only seeing a few people each way. The grounds were well kept and the rooms were alway immaculate. The concierge was helpful. We wanted to go on an offshore fishing excursion and they called several companies to get us the best price for both the excursion and cab which I appreciated. The restaurant ambiance was quite nice. It is a beachfront palapa. The food quality was hit or miss. About half of the things that we ate were excellent with the other half being below average in quality (namely the oriental food options). The drink quality varied from bartender to bartender with some of the drinks being wonderful and some being undrinkable. The service was always excellent. Overall we enjoyed our time here very much. We highly recommend this resort and would love to stay here again in the future.

If you like a beach vacation it would be difficult to imagine a better setting. A 30-second stroll from your room through the immaculately maintained garden and you are right there, beneath the palm trees which fringe a broad swathe of volcanic sand, miles long, and beyond it a surfboarder’s paradise thundering on to the beach. And for those looking for a laidback stay loads of hammocks strung from the palms.

Our deluxe suite was not particularly luxurious but it was very large with the beach side wall-to-wall glass, perfect for watching surfers or horseback riders doing their stuff as you lie in bed watching. Or you could lie in your large personal plunge pool instead. The hotel is characterised by spectacular paintings and wall treatments, and the room has these in abundance, but the basic description is simple, comfortable, and clean. In that light we found it expensive for what it was.

This was our third hotel on this visit to Costa Rica and at each we have been really impressed by the quality and variety of the food. Lots of fish, whether marinaded or cooked; tender beef from a farm down the road; and vegetables and fruit out of the hotel garden. At this place it was there in abundance all served with a sincere smile and lively chit chat.

In fact that was a distinguishing factor about our stay. Every member of staff we bumped into in our three days, whether front desk attendant, room maid, waiter, or gardener, seemed happy to be doing what they were doing and wanting to make us feel welcome. That of course is hugely important to guests, and we were sad to leave despite the room rate being out of whack.

Room Tip: Go for beachfront for the view

The Alma del Pacifico at Esterillos Este is a beautiful boutique hotel set right on the beach. We have been to this hotel many times and the staff always treat us like family. The hotel restaurant is great and serves food grown on site. There are two large swimming pools and a jacuzzi as well as a spa which offers great treatments. This is the perfect place to while away lazy days or grab a surf outfront.

Room Tip: Enjoy your food and drinks by the pool!

Spectacular! This hotel has everything! Beautiful rooms, great food at their beachside restaurant to be enjoyed while viewing amazing sunsets. The surrounding plants & flowers show off the beauty of being in Costa Rica.

What a surprisingly beautiful beachside stop we experienced on our way back from Manuel Antonio. We had a delicious lunch and stayed for the amazing sunset while swinging on the hammocks. Just off the highway, this unassuming delight was the perfect stop on our way back from Manuel Antonio. The rooms looked so inviting as well. We look forward to booking one on our next visit.

Alma is on an upward trajectory in terms of upkeep. We visited there last year (2/13) and were saddened by the paint splashes on paving stones, other colored walls, etc., missing tiles on walkways and inferior quality food.
This February, my husband and I visited again for 2 nights. It seems some of the splashes have been wiped away, saw fewer missing tiles, and found the food a bit better. That strikes me as a major area for continued improvement. There is no reason that I can think of for a resort of such beauty not to offer delicious meals. The wait staff tries hard but lacks training in good serving skills.
We hope for better times for Alma!
