“Small breakfast but excellent location!”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

Location, location, location!! The Hotel and restaurant is just a few steps from the beach, great landscaping and good deck on the pool. We enjoyed a lot on the bar with the great staff and good food. The rooms are clean and comfortable, all with a balcony. For that high price, I would expect better breakfast, we only get fruits, coffee and toasts. The dog of the Hotel Roxy is lovely!!

Room Tip: Upstairs, with balcony, pool view!

The price is great, staff were awesome and friendly and I loved the food. Great Beach! Best rum punch I've ever had, and I recommend the curry chicken. We want to go back again soon. A great place to relax and unwind for a few days or weeks. Some serious tranquility was had by all. Only one critique: Breakfast doesn't start at 7 as stated on the website, def more like 8:30 which was annoying because I had to wait hungry each morning. Also the free breakfast doesn't include any protein (great fresh fruit, toast, coffee, tea, juice, marmelade) but yogurt or eggs (even hardboiled-super simple) would have been nice in addition. You can order real breakfast which was delicious but costs extra. The beach is great for awesome morning jogs/yoga/exercise, which is why I wanted protein with breakfast. I just ended up eating the complimentary breakfast and then ordering a second breakfast of gallo pinto. Another small peeve was the bar music, which was mostly pretty insipid American music and I personally prefer Latin music or reggae (you, know, for ambiance!) Seriously though, the beach was awesome. Low waves, no rocks, warm water, great beach combing, very soft black volcanic sand. Also there was a fair amount of wildlife to be seen: green parrots, geckos, iguana, crabs, squirrels, fish jumping in the surf, cute well cared-for beach dogs (not your usual skinny strays), osprey, sandpipers, frogs, pelicans, and more. 9/10 would recommend!

We stayed in Jaco when we should have come down here. We parked here to explore the beach because we heard there were surf board rentals here. There aren't really, but the bartender Marco helped arrange for a local guy to deliver a surf board for $20 in an hour or two. After we went surfing we used their showers, and before that they gave us change to pay the surfboard guy even though we didn't buy anything.

The grounds are beautiful and well maintained, and now that I see the tripadvisor special rate I'm kicking myself for not staying here. Oh well, next time.

This is a really great place, and I already came back to Pelicanos for the second time. Just one minute from your hotel room to the Pacific (at least when there is high tide). And you can have a kilometer of beach on your own... Simple but clean and nice rooms, great and reasonably priced food and extraordinarily friendly and nice staff - which applies to all of the employees.
So why only 4 credits: the manager is extremely strange, breakfast is poor and the reservation process did not work out by internet/ mail: we never received any reply to our emails.

After 18 months of working 12 hours a day, I was toasted. I needed a place to go to recover my strength and perspective. Fortunately for me I live in Costa Rica, a few hours away from a small hotel called the Pelican on the Pacific Coast. In the past I would have characterized the Pelican as more of a bare bones, surfer hotel, That was before Debbie, the current owner transformed it..totally.. How can I say what sets it apart? The tastefully remodeled rooms? The delicious food? The attention to detail? If I had to choose one word to describe it, it would be "heart". Many hotels are well managed, but few have heart. For sure nature played its part, providing a wondrous natural ambiance; white sands, soothing surf, beautiful tropical flora and fauna, What more can I say.

Room Tip: I like being near the pool.

We were 4 women who stopped here for a breath...the beach was great, hardly anybody else on the beach! Great! Rooms were basic, with air conditionning. No fridge, but there is a restaurant and bar. Pool was out of service. Staff was Very friendly, merci Marco d'etre si gentil et avoir un grand sourire! Great rate, low season, of course. Breakfast was included, fruit and toast with coffee.

We were only going to spend one night at this peaceful place, but needed to rest so decided to spend one more night. We stayed in one of the private homes beside the hotel. Wonderfully equipped with everything we needed, private, and so comfortable. And about 50 feet from the beach so we could hear the waves and smell the salt air. The beach has no people on it and is very clean. Great to walk on, not steep like some of the beaches in Costa Rica. We truly enjoyed this place! The staff was friendly and helpful and the restaurant was good. Can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: We loved the private home beside the hotel!
