Manoir de la Branche
Reviewed August 13, 2012

I stayed with my wife and children (11 & 8) and booked 2 rooms one night. This hotel is in the calm and pretty small village. It takes about 30min. by car from Le Mont Saint-Michel. This cute small and traditional hotel was built in 15th century. The rooms are clean, well furnished and confortable. The garden maintained by hotel owner is very beautiful. There are many flowers and fruits. And Hotel owners (husband and his wife) are very kind and friendly. They speak English.
We could spent beautiful and relaxed time there in a rich natural environment.

It was a delightful experience; I especially enjoyed learning some history about the manor from the friendly people that own it. The owners were very hospitable, welcoming us to the house as old friends would. They offered us apple cider welcoming drinks and a hearty French breakfast the next day. The rooms were very spacious and richly furnished. It feels like you have stepped into a time machine. The location is also very good considering you are but about 40km from the Mont-saint-Michel and only 15 km from the historic town of Fougeres. There is no restaurant at the Manoir, but the owners helped us find a nice place in the nearby town. They even called in advance to make sure there was a table to accommodate us.

Highly recommend it to travelers visiting Brittany and/or Normandy to get a good taste of the regions architecture and its peoples hospitality.

Highly recommended. This was an amazing experience and was the perfect touch on my romantic road trip through France. It was a great way to surprise my wife. This Chateau is exactly 600 years old (built 1412). The building has so much history, with huge wooden cross beams supporting each floor, stone spiral stair case, and big open rooms. The room was fantastic. The building's style and stature makes worthy of being called a castle. We sat outside and drank wine to watch the sun set. The place has a very homey feel as well, with a lovely couple being the owner/inn keepers. They took great care in making us feel comfortable and directing us to some local restaurants and sites. Definitely the highlight of our tour through the French countryside. This would be a must for history buffs, couples on a romantic tour through Europe, or just anyone seeking a true touch of the French countryside.

We arrived late from a long US flight from Orlando to Paris- via car rented in Rennes. RoseMarie and Joel helped us find a restaurant- since many were closed due to a holiday. The room was tastefully furnished and decorated with interesting paintings and pieces. One delight was the very modern bathroom- we loved the warm showers. The view of the flowering gardens and fields was worth the stay. The hosts gave very helpful advice on local attractions, restaurants, and provided maps that even simple mined Americans could follow. The breakfasts were works of art- all kinds of breads and jams, fresh fruits, juice, and hot drinks. Each morning we rewarded with small nosegays from the garden made by the creative Rose Marie. I really enjoyed talking gardening with Rose Marie and Joel knew all about the World war II history of the area. You will enjoy your stay in this manor house. We highly recommend the Manoir de la Branche- not just for the rooms, or the breakfast, but to get to meet such kind and helpful host.

Room Tip: I think any room would be great.

It was one of the highlights of our trip. Not just another impersonal luxury hotel but a place with a soul. Fabulous, beautifully restored manor house and tastefully furnished rooms with the atmosphere that makes you dream about the times long gone. Manoir de la branche lets you enjoy its historical charm in a great comfort. What makes this amazing place perfect are the hosts - such nice people. They told us plenty of interesting stories about the manor and surroundings, gave us great advices what to visit and where to eat; to cut a long story short they made us feel the most welcome. Breakfast was lovely also. Thanks once again! We hope to come back as soon as possible.

We were accepted at late notice from a failed booking 8 miles across country, hot and bothered and incredibly behind schedule, we were given the most reassuring and calming welcome ever, and as it happens, this is how our hosts receive all their guests. We were shown to our enormous room, (Chambre des Hirondelles) and then immediately press-ganged into joining a welcoming of all guests ( something of a tradition) whereby aperitifs are served whilst everyone sits around the table in the main dining room and discusses their day. 5 minutes quickly became an hour and our evening dining reservation was in jeopardy. Our hosts kindly phoned ahead to the restaurant (twice) rescheduling 20:00 to eventually 21:30. The bathroom en-suite for our room had a slightly impracticable shower over a roll top bath which I managed to flood very easily, not all my fault. We were greeted home at around 01.00 next day.
French breakfast can all too easily be very ordinary, this was just the opposite, just the most amazing ever, everything home baked fresh and the very highest standards and choices, I can still picture it, more flowers on the table than you see at the better endowed florists. Another occasion.
Saint-Brice-en-Cogles is 9 miles from Fougeres and 20 miles from Mont St Michel and could be described as slightly in the middle of nowhere, rest assured, Ma and Pa as we nicknamed them are doing their absolute utmost to place Manoir de la Branche firmly on the map. It could be said that the Manoir lacks facilities, after all there is no restaurant, no swimming pool, no tennis and no woodland walks but for a one night stopover I doubt this can be beaten.

RoseMarie and Joel were perfect hosts, very welcoming and full of helpful advice on local attractions and restaurants. Our room was huge with a wonderfully comfortable king sized bed. The stone manor had been lovingly restored, and they were rightfully proud of its history. The gardens were lovely and it was very quiet, but close to town for shops and restaurants. RoseMarie's breakfasts were a wonder, with lots of home made treats. Every morning she could be seen wandering around her garden picking fresh flowers for the table. What a delight. It was a perfect place from which to explore the local attractions. We stayed three nights and were genuinely sad to leave. We hope to return in the not too distant future.
