“I felt priviledged to know and visit this gem.”
Reviewed January 17, 2012

My wife and I stayed at Koala Bungalows for three nights. We enjoyed the hikes around the volcano crater lake and nearby streams. I am a birder and there were great birds here including Black-throated Magpie Jay and Elegant Euphonia. The climate (in March) seemed ideal, highs in the upper 70's to 80 and lows in the 60's. The lake was clean and fresh not salty, great for swimming and kayaking as it is nearly always smooth surfaced.

We bought food from the local market as the restaurants, which there are many open-air ones around the lake, were almost all closed after 5:00PM. It seems that this is a lunch/day trip destination from Tepic so the restaurants mostly only do lunch. Other than that inconvenience this was a wonderful place to unwind and enjoy. We especially liked hearing people (the customers!) singing at the restaurants.

At the south end of the lake is a small park with a rocky cliff and rope swings that my boys enjoyed.

“What a beautiful and peaceful lake, it's well worth a visit!”
Reviewed November 16, 2011

We stayed at Koala Bungalows, a budget hotel at the lakes edge. (On the left on arrival to the lake) Our bungalow (700 pesos per night) had a view of the well tended gardens and lake and we ate at koala's charming restaurant "La Mojarra de Samao" run by Christian, the owner's son. The owners and staff were very friendly and helpful and we had a great time exploring the lake with rental kayaks and mountain bikes. We saw a great diversity of wildlife especially birds and, taking Christian's advice, made a trip to "Charco Verde" and the nearby waterfalls at "El Real de Acuitapilco" .. An unforgettable experience!

“hidden paradise”
Reviewed March 5, 2009

what a beautifull place! it takes aprox 2 hours on the toll road from guadalajara then you follow the signs. You make your way through the small town and get to an observation post for the lake- you make your way down the paved road (15 minutes) and you arrive to one of mexicos paradise. Santa Maria Del Oro's latest hotel boutique that opened close to 1 year is simply amazing. Its an all inclusive boutique hotel that reservations and payment is made in guadalajara. you can see their website at wwwhotellagoescondido.com
its the perfect place to take some books and sit back and enjoy by the pool. You can also rent 4 wheel quad motorcycles and also a speed boat / bicycles. I enjoyed the complimentary tour around the lake on a new open deck house/type boat.
You can walk around the lake and eat at one of many restaurants and ask where you can buy those wonderfull ice creams made with traditional ancient machine.
The food is mostly sea food, i did not order any meats, just fresh shrimp.
if your next vacation is in puerto vallarta, i recomend flying into guadalajara and renting a car then staying 2 or 3 nights in santa maria del oro and then make your way to puerto vallarta/nuevo vallarta. I really enjoyed traveling through Santa Maria Del Oro

“Lake in a Volcano”
Reviewed May 14, 2008

It's 2 hours from Guadalajara, it's a lake aprox. 3km large which is in the crater of an old volcano, there are a lot of restaurants and a beutiful hotel, where you can rest and practice water sports.
Its not expensive an it's worth it.
