“Absolutely wonderful!”
Reviewed June 12, 2014

Kalmatia Sangam is an oasis of peace in the hills. Once there after the long drive from Delhi, one can immediately begin to relax and unwind – welcomed by cool moist face towels and chilled rhododendron juice. The beautiful and comfortable rooms, which are exceptionally clean, are only spaces to retreat into during the dark hours and rains. Other than that, the lovely surroundings and the many places to sit and walk around under the pines and cedars within the estate keep the visitors entertained. The meals are good enough to look forward to and add a dash of excitement and adventure. Those of us, who have grown up on the staple diet of jeera aloo-peeli daal-anda bhurji of hill holidays of yore, can’t still quite accept that one can get full-on Lebanese and Italian meals at such hill resorts these days. And with delicious desserts to boot! The staff is very friendly and courteous. And Narendra and Imogen make it feel a bit like visiting good friends in the hills -- which doesn’t help because then you either don’t want to come away or are planning the next visit by the time you are having your second breakfast there. The spa is the cherry on the cake as Imogen’s expert massage and advice loosens up many a tight muscle and problematic lifestyle practices.

We visited with our elderly father and the people there were amazingly helpful and attentive to his needs. You can check with the management for rooms with easier access if you are travelling with older people. This was out second visit, and we intend to go back many more times.

For those who want to explore the nearby areas, there is Jageshwar, Bageshwar, Kausani, Almora, Binsar, some shopping to do, some village walks to be taken, some temples to be visited. Whichever way you are looking at it, a visit to Kalmatia is going to be a great break from your city life.

Room Tip: If you are travelling solo, ask for Patridge or Pheasant - These duplex rooms are a delight to stay...

If any resort in Uttarakhand..can boast about it being eco friendly...and how efficiently the designers of this place have blended themselves in with nature...it would be Kalmatia Sangam...

The main entrance gives you a feel.....as to hope everythings going to be ok.. since the owners of the property have for some reason put their companies name..which is a Pharma Company at the gate.

But nothing prepares you for..the exceptional location of this unique resort...May is not the ideal time for Himalayan Views..but on DAY ONE we were greeted...by the such awe inspiring views..right from the resto...our rooms...everywhere in the resort..

And then nice afternoon snacks..with Kandisa playin in the background...really tastefully and complete venue.

and an added bonus of a rainbow...the peace n tranquil..really touches you.

Mr Narendra and his team have done such an excellent job...of keeping it perfectly maintained..and you will almost always be in a state of conflict...whether to go about doing touristy things...or...not do anything..and enjoy life the kalmatia way..

You can skip all other sunset points...Kalmatia has an excellent nature trail..and village walk...you will experience it...as part of it.

Some things to note -
1.) Its on the outskirts of Almora...please avoid Almora market at costs..its exceptionally bad..
2.) The food at Kalmatia is truly freshly prepared....and very much like a home stay...so dont expect a grand meal...enjoy the simplicity of the meals there. You will not want anything else. The staff is courteous enough...to take specific menu demands also...if told in advance. (we eat food without onion n garlic..and they did an exceptional job at that...our food was actually better then the regular menu.)
3.) The place is truly out there in the trees and the mountains..families with kids..please ensure..your kids are always around adults.

Room Tip: The Cat 2 cottages are the best. If you happen to travel in Sept - Dec..pick the Himalyan Magpie...h...

If Amir Khusro had been to Kalmatia Sangam, he may have changed his view on Kashmir being the only place that is Heaven on Earth :)

The resort is nestled in the middle of untouched forest, and has breath taking views of Himalayas. Each hut has its own sit-out area and/or balcony which makes for great viewing of the spectacular sunrise over the mountains. If you are not able to get up that early, just waking up to a glorious view of the mountain range is also quite the experience.

In terms of activities, there are plenty of treks that you can take from the resort, ranging from a short 30 minutes one around the resort, to day long ones where the resort can arrange for a ride back in the evening if you are too tired to walk back up :). The place is managed by Mr Roy, who came to visit the area, fell in love with it and never left. As a result, he is quite knowledgable about the place and the treks and activities that you can engage in during your stay. There is also a Sunset Point a short 30-45 minutes away. Most people watch the sunset from the temple at the top of the hill, but I'd recommend finding a ledge next to the road below, where the sunset is just as pretty but you also get a view of the valley below and with a lot fewer people around.

The food at the resort is also really good. Lunch was mostly out, but we always had breakfast and dinner at the resort and really enjoyed the quiche and souffles on the nights they served continental food. The homestyle lamb was the highlight for the Indian food. The breakfast spread is elaborate and sumptuous, and they keep rotating the cuisine so we got to try everything from idli and dosa to chola bhaturas and scones with locally sourced organic jam. Since the resort has only a few huts, you do have to inform them a little in advance if you plan to dine with them. There is also a small menu for snacks during the day, but I'd suggest you stick to the paneer pakoras or masala peanuts. The chef is more than willing to accept other requests as long as you give them a few hours notice.

While we went there for the views and tranquility, what makes the place truly special is the warmth and hospitality of the staff. The couple who built and ran the place until recently, have personally trained the staff, who are all locals. Some of them have been with the resort since it was being constructed and they take real pride in the place and it shows in their warmth and in how well they take care of the guests. My dad broke his leg on one of the treks that we took, but everyone at the resort took really good care of him until he was good enough to travel back to Delhi. They constantly asked how he was doing and two of them even carried him up in a chair when we was not able to walk. They took care of him as if he was a family member.

We made the trip in late April, but we hear the views are even more spectacular in September and October. Will certainly be back for more. Truly memorable experience.

Room Tip: We stayed in Eagle's Nest, Himalayan Magpie and Pheasant - and we liked the first two a lot more...

Loved the place from the second we stepped in ! Stayed in the Himalayan Magpie cottage for three nights and couldn't have enough of it. The resort is around 2.5 hours drive from Nainital though its totally worth the hilly drive. Location is excellent and one can get a view of the majestic himalayas if the weather permits! Each cottage is beautifully made and is very spacious, we even had a lovely mezzanine kinda set up with a bed on top ...loved it... The sit out area outside is a warm place to view awesome birds, mountains and sip the cuppa coffee !
Food cooked is excellent and though a set menu but a good variety . Even the picnic lunches packed were fun.
Narendra and Imogen do a wonderful job of place and people management ... from suggesting things to do to general discussions regarding uttarakhand was very helpful. We visited the Kasar Devi temple for viewing the sunset and was a memorable experience... the suggestions for day trips given by Narendra were also super.
One more thing that should not be missed is the massage ! excellentttt !!!
Would certainly go back to Almora to stay @ Kalmatia

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent and have a charm of their own! Personally loveddd the Himalayan Magpie and s...

Wonderful, Awesome, Fantastic, OMG, Peaceful, Magnificent, ......and what not??? Kalmatia Sangam.....such a different name and so is the experience. Lucky to stay their in the end of April 2014, and after Munnar in kerala, this is my next favourite destination.

Peace of mind, serenity...and the view of Himalaya's .....its mesmerizing. Its like living in lap of nature, would love to visit this place again n again. I can spend day after day...sitting their and doing nothing.

A great place for "Bird Watching".....thanks a lot for introducing me to another delight of life!

To talk about people.....staff is always welcoming and hospitality is impeccable. Food is awesome and they take in your choice while preparing menu! Breakfast to dinner, everything is in place.....the taste of Kebabs are still fresh!!! Special words of wisdom available with Mr. Narendra (The Manager of Property) and spa is wonderful.

About rooms....I stayed at The Partridge....and its a unique cottage. View from balcony is exotic.... I recommend all the rooms except minvet which is on the other side! Rooms are tastefully done, well furnished and duly taken care. The place itself is so indulged with nature that its hard to differentiate.

Kalmatia is perfect blend of nature! The organic products supplied in cosmetics (bathing) are wonderful and rejuvenate body and mind.

Nature walk in the morning and encounters with birds of so much varieties....the colour, the sweet chirping! Ahhh what else you would ask for in life. Its a must visit place for every nature lover....... Thanks Kalmatia!

Room Tip: All Himalayan facing rooms....The Owl, The Pheasant, The Partridge, The Himalayn Magpie, The Eagle...

It took us a long time to find a holiday destination far from the maddening crowd and close to nature where you also get pampered.....We found it in Kalmatia Sangam. The credit goes to my daughters who did all the planning with Imogen & Narendra.
Nature at its best. We saw more species of birds here, than in the Binsar Wild Life Park ! A grandstand view of a marauding Leopard in the village thrown in for free !! A tranquil 'Nature Walk' within the property for those who shy away from ardous treks. The pine trees sighing in the wind. I could go on and on !
We took 3 treks including one at Binsar ranging from 3-7 hours each. The guides Anand and Yogendra were articulate and well informed. The routes were well planned and the logistics impeccable. They have a lot more treks up their sleeve, depending on the degree of eagerness displayed by you.
The cottages are aesthetically done up, well equipped, very comfortable, tranquil and does not dominate you as a normal 5 star room does. The staff are exceedingly polite and always ready to oblige the slightest of your whims with a smile.
The cuisine is imaginative, possibly Imogen's doing ! Kumaoni dishes, stuffed paranthas, home type dal & roti, Shammi Kababs, mediterranean delights, mouth-watering desserts - its all there, if you can digest it ! A friendly tip. Do a lot of walking & then gorge !!
For those on to Yoga, Meditation , Massage, its all there. You only have to ask.
Finally the ambience. No garrulous conversations, no loud-mouths around, it is tranquil, with breath-taking views, serene environment, an attentive & caring staff. You enter a sphere where you become 'family' from Day 1. Very soothing to to the nerves.
Way to go, Imogen & Narendra !!!
It definately is a repeat destination for me.

Room Tip: Senior Citizens stay at Owl. Magpie & Eagle's Nest are good for views and to improve your di...
