“Just the place for peace and relaxation”
Reviewed April 18, 2013

I recommend Emerald Trail to all travellers who are looking for a place in the hills to chill out in. The location is easily accessible from Delhi, preferably by the Kathgodam Shatabdi (it doesn't ply on Thursdays) from the Anand Vihar Terminal early morning. It takes about 6 hours to reach Kathgodam from where it takes just over an hour to Emerald Trail by cab from the station.

The cottage has a large drawing room, four well-appointed rooms with clean loos, prompt service, good food and a large lawn. There is greenery all around and you get an overwhelming sense of peace and tranquility just sitting there.

I went there twice -- once last November and this March -- and had a wonderful time on both occasions.

Room Tip: I liked the two rooms on the first floor because of the verandahs and the quaint woodwork.

We spent 3 nights at Emerald Trail. The warm and endearing staff go out of their way to make you feel at home. Simple home-cooked food, cosy rooms, lots of books and board-games to keep you engaged and a typical outdoorsy, farm- like feel makes a stay at Emerald Trail an absolute must for every tired soul from the city. The lodge is safely tucked away from the madness of the neighbouring town of Bhimtaal and is cradled amidst towering silveroak trees that overlook the valley. A family of happy 'bhutia' dogs and four resident cows make for a perfect farm picture!!

Congratulations for Emerald trail and the twin joys of your life!

We had a great time at Emerald Trail. Kudos to you for doing the place so nicely...its very evident that its a labour of love.
Its done up just right...not too opulent( then its scary for us parents to keep the kids in control), child friendly with indoor and outdoor games and the live toys ( Lucy and gang),they loved it...can't wait to go back.

Lalit and his team were very helpful and courteous. The rooms were big and nice, enough sheets for everyone, neat and clean and above all very comfortable..it was a perfect home stay..felt just like home!! The food was as per our requirement..non spicy and fresh....the only thing we (I )missed was desserts ! Also the power fluctuations.
But it was a memorable stay. We want to go back with our entire extended family now! In a place like that its better if you are in a big group where the kids are having their own fun and the adults just chill...

It reminded us of our holiday in the Chalets of Black Forest and Salzburg, It was actually a slice of Europe.

Please keep up the good work!

Kasturi and Rajeev

We spent three nights at Emerald Trail during the Puja holidays -- and had a great time. The cottage is beautiful, with a lovely expanse of green around it on which you can loll around all day. Our kids had a good time: there were four frisky dogs to play with, some cows to observe (they didn't get around milking them though!) and nice patches of vegetation (grown organically, we are told). The cottage itself -- with four comfortable rooms -- is very pretty, with a spiral staircase (the kind that we see in old Hindi films!) winding up to the first floor. Our room had an attic-like field, and windows that opened up to a vista of green. The accoustics in the rooms are incredible. We could hear our friends muttering away at night! But sitting out in the sun all day and going for long walks (well, some of us did that) ensured that, despite the mutterings from other rooms, we slept well. I should also mention the food: it's lightly cooked, yet delicious.

Is there a downside? Only the electricity, which is erratic. But they have their own solar panels, so there is some electricity.

This is a place one has to go back to. We are planning out our next visit!

Room Tip: The downstairs rooms are bigger, and one has a big loo. But the upstairs rooms have a lovely view of...

If you are really a Traveller , not a tourist.- Go for it. Perfect spot to explore your own soul. Infact your stay can be a great one if you are the sole team staying there. Patch up with your friends or relatives. It will be your memorable stay. Don't expect it is Bhimtal . It is 11 Km from Lake upwards and a complete village stay. It has a cottage with 4 rooms . Ground rooms are bigger. Manager Lalit will do everything to make your stay comfortable. Cook is good. If you want to change in the way of cooking . Please help cook to know about the same. Can you imagine , me "Bangali" have cooked 2 kilos Fish ( taken from Bhimtal market ) in the kitchen for all.
Don't expect a 5 star facility nor even 4 star . If you like village life and want to enjoy your home life stay away from the busy Tourist Life. Vegetables are grown at the firm itself.
Set your expectation correct . There is no TV in your Room and TV is placed in the common area. There is no desert after food , so you can arrange it yourself when you go for a Bhimtal visit . Or , I can give you a rustic Idea --" there is a Small shop on the way from Emirald upwards to Jungles , which prepares Jilebi in wood smoked oven. Simply awesome.
You will find Yellow-billed Magpie, Blue whistling Thrush , Blacked Lored Yellow TIT birds in the property itself. You are really have interest in wildlife , lookout for Leopard Scat in the upwards roads.

The location of the place is very very secluded making it one of the quietest places i have ever stayed. The environment is homely with friendly staff who lives with the family there. The menu is discussed with you before the meals being prepared. Everything is freshly prepared and grown inhouse at the farm.Even the milk is used from in house cows. There is nice collection of books. If you want to enjoy a peaceful, homely( not ultra luxury) environment, this is the place to be.

Room Tip: there are only 4 rooms and all are same

If you love going out of the way - and be a traveller rather than a tourist, Emeral Trail could a place for you. Not too far from the plains but still totally secluded in terms of tourist crowd, you can feel the silence around you all time at this place.

The 4 room cottage plus adjoining lawns are placed at the right location - overlooking a valley and it gets it share of sunlight right from the morning to the late evening at different parts of the property. There is lots of open space for kids to enjoy themselves and for adults to just sit and relax all along the day.

Do note that all the rooms in the cottage are not of the same size/setup, hence it is best to travel in groups/extended family so that you can take the whole cottage and adjust accordingly. The staff is very courteous and food is good. Plenty of reading material to keep you occupied as well. Or, go for long walks in the mountains and have panaromic natural views to soothe yourelf.

It is like living in your own house...

Room Tip: Go with extended family or a group of friends; hire whole cottage to enjoy most...
