The hills have a certain magical, mystical way about them. Many of us want to have a holiday home in the hills. Some of us will have it one day and for those who wont or for those who will but cant wait, Amitabh has a wonderful option. Its his own home in the mountains that he has opened up for the weary city dweller seeking a moment of peace, quiet and solitude in the hills.

Located a convenient 2 hour taxi ride from Kathgodam in a sleepy little hamlet called Darmani, it is patently clear that Junoon in the Hills is the owner's labour of love the moment you step inside the gates. 4 years in the making, it stands out and fits it at the same time amidst the simplicity and innocence of the lazy Kumaoni village it calls home. Referred to as 'Company' by the locals, probably alluding to the employment it provides for the villagers, this is a place where jarred nerves and tired bodies caught in the relentless pursuit of urban oneupmanship get a chance to relax and recharge before going back to the inevitable grind.

The construction, though modern, is aesthetic and fittings are tasteful. There are 3 well furnished rooms, a family suite, a large living room, an open deck with a magnificent view, lots of green spaces and even a small gym. There are 'things to do' for those who cannot digest the concept of being able to do nothing such as the pool table, the mini golf, satellite TV and music. For others there's the unlimited opportunity to lie on the deck and sip endless cups of tea gazing at the magnificent Himalayan peaks in the distance that are as awe inspriring as they are forbidding. You could also take walks through the village and observe life first hand as it takes its langorous course through the village - the small grocery shops, the farmer tending to his crop, the infant monkey giving hell to its parents, the winding roads, the meadows, the fruit laden trees, the stream at Garampani and the clean mountain air. Like most hill folks, the villagers are simple, warm and very welcoming - not only will they guide you around, but will also be eager to escort you if looking for something in particular. This is probably even better if you have small kids for they will get an opportunity to observe nature first hand that they arent exposed to in their city lives. Amitabh is a caring host and took the effort of calling us a couple of times to ask whether we had everything we needed and were being looked after by the staff. The staff are very courteous and deserve a 10/10 for effort.

This is a very new property so there are a few areas for improvement which I suggest not as criticism and perhaps are already being worked upon. One would be to try and improve the quality of food which we found to be a little disappointing. I understand this is a homestay and only provides home style food, which we were actually quite looking forward to, but the quality was a little sub par. Electricity was also a bit of a problem and we were without power for the entire first night because the feeder at the local station had broken down. Obviously, the power station was to blame so no fault of the owner, but just something to be aware of. Other than that the power cuts arent all that frequent and you probably wouldnt even notice. The weather is generally pleasant but got a little warm during the night when electricity was playing truant. However, these are minor issues in the face of an overall lovely experience which will not take away anything and certainly wouldnt stop me from going again.

Time is chasing after all of us, but for a brief moment, make it stop. Visit Junoon. Stay a while.

A very balanced review - thank you for the input and comments. We have worked on the food, and have improved both the quality of the ingredients, and the range of food cooked. We look forward to having you back with us so you can sample the food and tell us whether we've improved or not!

Re the electricity - this is something we need to address in a more structural way - perhaps a generator...? For now, we have installed an inverter, and UPS devices for all the electronics, so at least the tv, music and fridge / freezer don't go on the blink when the electricity plays truant.

The path to Junoon in the Hills takes you directly into a whole new world. The spacious house is surrounded by the beauty of nature – a panorama of Himalayan mountains, a colourful garden, majestic trees, extensive valleys and much more…

The huge windows in the modern house provide a light and open atmosphere and the beautifully finished woodwork make it a very cosy place. Every room has its own theme, and wooden furniture gives an insight into the art of handcraft in Asia.

The local area offers a range of activities - from peaceful walks in the area to adventurous trekking in the hills. Even relaxing massages or a game of pool are an option. Junoon in the hills is the perfect getaway for people who look for variety, peace and fun.

The local staff is welcoming, friendly and helpful and are pampering guests with culinary delights.

I can recommend this fantastic place to everyone who wants to escape the commercial tourism and enjoy a “real” holiday.

This is the place for working couples who just want to run away from the daily rigmarole of dropping kids to school; onto phone calls; to the office; meetings; picking up kids and more calls..a home away from the mad pace of city-life. Surprisingly, our kids rated it the "best holiday ever.." when we were worried about how they'd react to being away from the city. The kids (four of them)had a wonderful time running around on the hill slopes; catching newborn lamb (or goat) and; spotting birds. They did not spend more than an hour in front of the TV even though the place has a sat TV connection. The food was simple, rustic...just the way my granny used to make it for a meal. So, if you want to enjoy simple luxuries in a serene surrounding, head to the Junoon in the hills

I spent 3 days at Junoon and enjoyed every bit of it. Located 1.5 hours from kathgodam station, Junoon has a warm and welcoming feel to it that made me feel happy to be there within minutes of our arrival. The home is a true labour of love, with personal touches and attention to detail clearly evident all thru the house. Bright and sunny, my favourite section is the deck which offers stunning views of the valley and doubled up as our bonfire, music and chilout zone in the evenings. The food is scrumptious, staff friendly and efficient and the colorful rooms nice and comfy.

A leisurely walk down the mountain trail, fun picnic by the stream, super relaxing massage, and temperature controlled heated beds all added to a fabulous holiday experience.

I shall visit Junoon many more times and I look forward to being there again....

This was my second trip to Junoon. Both times were truly heavenly. Its the ideal getaway from the hustle bustle of the city without compromising any of the luxuries and comforts of home! The home is stunning with each room having a view of the hills. THe food is home cooked delicious indian comfort food. The attention to detail is there from hot water bottles place in your bed, to different locations for each meal. Dinner and cocktails by the fire and a picnic at the river. The air is clean and the location divine. Its a combination of peace, comfort and luxury. I came back refreshed, rejuvenated and i cant wait to go back!
Thank you for creating this wonderful getaway.. its a labour of love that you can see and feel in every part of the place.
