“Nice but could be better for breakfast”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

I have recently returned from a holiday at this 28 room hotel nestled in the hills directly looking down onto Hersonissos Crete. It is fair to say that George the hotel owner is a very warm and welcoming host. He always tries to please his guests wherever he can. The hotel is very well served with repeat visitors who book year after year. We met a Dutch couple who were guests for the 8th year in succession and had already booked for next year. Around the poolside it was apparent there were not a lot of first time visitors. In my opinion repeat guests are treated with more favour (and i do kind of understand this) but it does cause some disquiet amongst other guests. This was voiced by at least 3 other couples whilst i was resident. The room we received did not accurately reflect the one we saw on the website. It was however decent and had a view of the sea. My observation is that the shower(which is attached to the bath taps should be attached to the wall rather than left loose, this would negate having to shower one handed). The rooms could also benefit from a full length mirror (we do like to know how we look when we go out). A free safe was provided which was a nice touch. Otherwise the facilities at the hotel are excellent. The food cooked by Eleni is fantastic and of restaurant quality but pricey. However and in honesty i didn't eat anywhere better in the whole time we were there. The hotel drinks were also a bit more costly than the village, a beer being 4 Euros but the Amstel on draught was the best i experienced on my holiday. Generally on this visit i have found Crete to be very expensive. Every morning sunbeds were readily available and the pool was kept beautifully clean.Towels were provided at no cost (another nice touch). As to the breakfasts i know it is a personal preference but if i see another egg in the next 12 months i will scream. Breakfast was not fondly received with the non repeat visitors. it is monotonous and could be something to look forward too. I accept it is continental in concept but to be greeted each day with you can have a single egg boiled, scrambled or fried is disheartening. As was the processed cheese and ham. I will also like to point out the orange juice at breakfast is concentrated and not fresh. Although fresh orange is available for payment on the drinks menu? Why not provide cereal, pastries or fruit in a buffet format? People asked to pay for other options but this was not available. However i must say the bar area next to the pool where the breakfast is served is so lovely. The pool area would be of some concern if i had small children. The pool is infinity and very shallow at one end and only about 5' at the deepest point. My concern would be the hotel is on a hillside and there is a drop over the side of the pool. To sum up the Creta blue, a lovely hotel with great staff. I would recommend the village and this hotel in particular for a couples retreat break.

My sisters and I were looking for a week of relaxation, sunshine, delicious food and impeccable service and we certainly got what we wanted. I was emailing George way back in March when I booked it, concerned about whether one of my sisters could manage at the hotel, as she has mobility problems. I needn't have worried - George had reserved us one of the ground floor rooms, 421, which had a few steps down to the pool area from our little patio, and a gentle slope outside the front door. The room was bright, cool and pretty. Two of us in one room, and one on the single sofa bed. The air con was brilliant, much appreciated after the roasting hot temperatures we experienced during the days! My only tiny irritation, was the design of the bathroom. I can't understand why the shower is not attached to the wall. You should be able to just stand under it and wash rather than have to wrestle with the shower head - I am able bodied and I found it irritating, and it was even more challenging for my sister, who only has the use of one arm. Also, in our bathroom, the door opened inwards and banged into the toilet, reducing the space, this could be sorted by changing the door to open outwards into the hallway.

The infinity pool was beautiful, with views out over the sea and to the resorts below. The pool had a lovely bar. This doubles as the restaurant too. The pool man was a character, always smiling - he also doubles as handyman and porter! There is a toilet downstairs, in the reception area, which is lovely and clean - again my sis found the stairs a bit of a challenge so she sometimes used the slope around the side of the bar to get down there, but she managed. We only found out 3 days before we went home, that you can have pool towels for free, given out by the girls at the bar, which is a boon, if you don't want to take your own wet pool towel home in your case. The sunloungers were the most comfy I have laid on and there were plenty of them, although it was getting a little tight for room, after a lot of new arrivals checked in. There are also plenty of umbrellas and the lovely pool man will bring one to you if required ( they have a heavy concrete base) There is a shadier area for sunbathing on the grass if you don't like cooking in the sun!

The bar is manned by Costas, Vasiliki and Lavinia. Breakfast is served from 9-11am. You get tea, coffee, a small basket of bread and butter and jams, slices of ham and cheese, then a choice of egg, followed by gorgeous Greek yoghurt, drizzled with honey and served with a different fruit combination every day. I thought it was lovely.( If you are desperate for a full English, I'm sure there is probably somewhere in the village.) There are also a couple of little supermarkets where they sell delicious giant croissants, Danish pastries and doughnuts. My other sister used to go for a walk every day to get supplies for an afternoon snack as we were half board. Another thing I loved at Creta Blue, was the music that was played. Lovely and relaxing - breakfast was sometimes classical with a bit of Pink Martini thrown in (the band, not the drink, more's the pity!) Mid morning through to the afternoon, was chill out music - Café del Mar style that really went with the beautiful setting, and evening music was soul, R&B - all good in my book! We sometimes ate lunch, but can't really expand much on this because we ate salads if we had anything.........but the salads were delicious. We had Caesar, Cretan, Tuna and Greek, all scrummy and served with a bread basket. We tried the cocktails which were expensive (from 7 euros to 8.50 euros) but they were lovely. Unfortunately we didn't have a limitless budget so had to stick to cheaper drinks most of the time. I recommend the Blue Aegean - gorgeous! Now to dinner.............OMG! Eleni (George's Mum) cooked the most amazing food every evening. We looked forward to this every evening and I have to say we were never disappointed. As we were half board, we got a choice of starter but no choice of main, then either coffee or dessert (usually ice cream, but two nights there were Greek specialities - types of baklava, which again were delicious) The mains were out of this world. We had a lasagne one night, which was THE best I've ever eaten, we had pork with baked celery, chicken with beautiful home made chips, stuffed peppers......the food was heavenly. There is a wine list and George will pick out a good one for you to suit your budget.

The staff - George is a particularly charming, helpful, accommodating, welcoming, caring and lovely man, who couldn't do enough for us ( he smells gorgeous too!) Anything we were worried about, he sorted it, without fuss. He was kind enough to let us keep our room as late as possible on the last day as we were not leaving until nearly 9pm, which was greatly appreciated, especially as my less able-bodied sister could relax a bit more before our journey home which was stressful for her. George's staff are an amazing team - his Mum is an incredible cook, Costas is the smiling barman with an unfortunate liking for that terrible track "Who let the dogs out?!" which thankfully was not played more than twice in our week! The maids do a wonderful job with the room cleaning - they are very forgotten members of staff in reviews I find, but do the worst job in my opinion. I just hope they are appreciated within the team. As for the girls Vasiliki and Lavinia, the most lovely, smiley, friendly and warm waitresses I have ever met on holiday - you two and George made our holiday what is was - one of my favourites ever, in fact when we kissed them goodbye on our last evening, I cried....we had a FANTASTIC time, met some lovely people, enjoyed the gorgeous Greek weather and the terrific hotel. George, you deserve the accolades on Tripadvisor - you have created something VERY special at Creta Blue. I hope to meet you again one day. With love and thanks, from, Sally, Donna and Samantha xxx

Room Tip: Room 421 was great if walking up too many steps is a problem.

Pros: Beautiful hotel, large rooms, gorgeous pool, comfortable bed, set off a bit from the closest town and from the touristy beach area, a very nice breakfast (included with the room), a gorgeous view of the sea, and a friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff.

Cons: There really aren't any negatives to point out about the hotel. I will say this was the first time to Crete and I preferred the west significantly over the central part of the island (where this hotel is located).

I like many decided to book this hotel after reading the many reviews on trip advisor and it would be fair to say on the whole the reviews were accurate.
The hotel was booked through an agent and after a 25 minute taxi ride from heraklion airport and 40 euros later we arrived .
The hotel is perched on a hill looking onto the harbour below, there is a steep incline to
the rooms (some steeper than others ) however this enables all rooms a sea view.
On arrival we were met by George and taken to our room which overlooked the pool and bar.

The room

It was clean light with tiled floors, a double bed (hard mattress) small wardrobe kitchen area and bathroom.
There was a safe in the room provided free of charge , a fridge, kettle with a small amount of crockery and cutlery.
The bathroom was functional but small, there was a wall mounted hair dryer and shower above the bath , my only real issue was the fact there was no hook on the wall to attach the shower head so you needed to hold it whilst showering..... on a possative note lots of hot water in the evening. Would have liked a full length mirror !!!!
Good aircon and we never saw a creepy crawley in the room or outside on the patio throughout out stay , very clean !!!

Plenty of padded sunbeds around the pool and towels available.
Pool quite shallow.... I'm 5ft 6 and could still just about stand in the deep end.
Breakfast is the same every day eggs, fried scrambled ,boiled !!! bread , jam yoghurt ,would be nice to have some cereals.
Only ate once at the hotel in the evening I had pork in honey and ginger..... fair to say it was excellent and about 18 euros.

The village is a 5 minute walk from the hotel , the path is well constructed but steep and dark so take a torch... There are numerous restaurants and bars (see restaurant review) all are similar in price ranging from 20 euros to 30 pp for starter and main course

The hotel seems to cater predominately for the Dutch and British and there was always a vocal gathering around the hotel bar which closed at 1am.
Cocktails are about 7euros as are spirits and a large beer 4.5. prices a little cheaper in the village

Georges BBQ night is a good opportunity to meet fellow guests. We met some lovely people which truely enhanced our holiday.

The hotel is not adult only but no children whilst we were there , may well have been a different experience with children running around !!!.

If your looking for an action packed hotel with aerobics games drinking competitions etc then this is not the hotel for you (although you can sometimes hear the entertainment from other hotels on the coast).

This realy is the place to kick off your shoes sit back and chill out .

We arrived at the hotel by taxi , I rang the hotel the day before and Georgio the manager arranged it for us. Bit of a shock how steep the hill was to our room, but in the morning we got up and stood on the balcony and realised it was worth it.
The room was lovely bright and very clean. We booked through Expedia, it said washer/dryer and a stove in the room . NO neither was in the room.we booked an Executive room .
Breakfast was nice , staff were very hard working and always smiling .
We only ate there 3 times as the drinks were double the price of places in the village. It was €4 for a large beer , not even a pint . Ice tea was €3.50 a can . (What a shame , this was the only bad thing )
We went to the Astra bar in the village most evenings .
Pool was spotless ,the pool guy cleaned and scrubbed it every night .
Maids cleaned the room every day and changed the towels .
Half way through our holiday ,Georgio upgraded us to the penthouse suite. Think he had over booked the rooms , but we didn't complain as it was very nice. The balcony was huge ,with fantastic views .
You do need a car as its a 25 min walk down to the main shopping in hersonissos . Its a killer walking back, We never have a car on holiday as we find it stressful . It would be a good thing if the hotel had a shuttle 3 or 4 times a day down to Hersonnosis .
Best of all we never seen any cockroaches or creepy crawlies the whole of our holiday :)
We were so impressed with the staff we gave them all a €10 tip
Thanks Creta Blue for a lovely holiday :)))

Room Tip: Choose room 417 :)))

This is truly an exceptional hotel and holiday destination. This was our second visit and won't be our last; the staff make sure that you feel relaxed from the moment you arrive and nothing is too much trouble. If you have a problem, not that we had, just mention it to George and it will be sorted! We organised our holiday directly with George, booked flights on the internet and collected a car at the airport in the confidence that had there been any problems we could have contacted George knowing that he would help. The pool is spotless as is the whole hotel.

Was debating whether or not to write a review, however I told myself it was the right thing to do and I shouldn't be so selfish. All I want to do is keep this hotel a secret, but the hotel deserves the recognition and other people need to experience it. My boyfriend and I have just returned from a 12days here. The hotel is truly unique, it is set just behind the beautiful village of koutouloufari which has the nicest bakery and other traditional greek tavernas. Creta blue is perfect for a relaxing break, the service is 5* all of the staff take an interest in you and are attentive. Arriving at midnight I dreaded having to go through the normal hotel procedure of checking in, however on arrival we was shown straight to our room given a drink and told we would check in tomorrow and meet George. At breakfast George introduced himself and said there was no rush, just to do it whenever we was ready. George is possibably the nicest man I have ever met and I cannot help but reiterate the service from all of the staff. The rooms where clean and spacious, we booked a garden view room but still could see the sea. I have to mention the food at the hotel, it is out of this world, the meat pie is possibly the nicest thing I have ever eaten. The hotel restutant prices aren't expensive like your usual hotel, they are pretty much the same as you will find in the local restaurants. Thankyou George and all the staff for an amazing holiday. Beautiful hotel cannot wait to come back.
