After my wife booked this holiday without reviewing the accomodation, I was a bit apprehensive when I read some reviews on here.I needn`t have worried as it was one of our best hols to date.Firstly it was 7euros per night air con & 15 euros for safe key so Lena must have dropped her prices.Rooms were basic but spotless and all staff were excellent and so friendly, including the owner.Personally I thought Hersonissos was a dump so after two visits there we retreated back to our haven up the hill, and made do with our daily visits to Old Hersonissos.Koutouloufari was just so relaxing and the people are just so friendly and generous with their hospitality. Two restaurants i must praise highly are Oniro & Emmanuel where they cook their lamb & pork in wood ovens for 12 hours, and then just falls off the bone.Give Petros a miss, worst seafood pasta ever. So fair play to wor lass, she has discovered a little gem of a village.

We spent a week here and had a good time. Loved the village and location of appts. Please don't be put off by the burglaries we were there the same week it happened. And I know the one person left his door opened which you wouldn't do at home. I feel you need to be as careful if not more when you are on holiday where ever you are, not just Crete.
So I would recommend these apts. Staff were friendly, the apts were clean and adequate, we had 2 small balconys so got the sun morning and afternoon, 2 nice size pools. Plenty of room for sunbathing and no issues with sunbeds more than enough to go round which was a nice change.
Centrally located in village and more than enough choices of shops and restaurants.
Our favourite restaurant was Gallini so left out of apts, looks Grecian with its decor and waitresses, great service and food, presented beautifully and no more expensive. We would also recommend Nickos with his fish and grandmothers cretan dish, opposite Pithari. Also go right and plenty of good restaurants.
It is a 20 minute walk into Hissoronossus which is uphill on the way back but the little train goes to Old Hissoronossus and then the walk is on the flat

yes visit number 8 to the astra, we love it,its like going home! love alex to bits, and john, always nice to see eleni and soula they cant do enough to make our visit a happy one.yes a couple of apartments were broken into but so many people leave their balcony doors wide open and valuables on show, yes it does get hot.we always have air con in june and keep doors locked when we are out or in bed, always have a safe and its always locked.after all would you go to bed at home and leave your front door open?i understand one apartment broken into was directly under ours, we heard nothing.the same happened last year notes are in the apartments to ask that doors and windows are locked at night or if you go out, ours was on the dressing table. but these things happen everywhere in the world and will not stop us from going to crete, greece or the astra, in fact we are off again in october.great places to eat are esperos which is next door, patrikos and the little terverna in piskopiano behind the church, which i cant remember the name of.great gifts and honey go to tina and christopher at the kellari or evelyn next door to esperos.walk into hersonissos but get a taxi back unless you are a really keen walker, its very uphill!.cant comment on the new rep,we do our own thing, we only have the flight and apartment out of the package holiday has its cheaper than flight only and booking the apartment seperately.has always the apartment was cleaned everyday, clean towels and bedding.in fairness to the astra and people wanting to move i can understand this however i understand only three studios where empty last week.met some lovely people again this visit and cant wait to return in october.i would highly recommend the astra we love it.no night life for the youngsters but plenty down the hill in hersonissos.great place for kids and families is star beach lots of activities going on.roll on october!

This was our 1st visit to Crete, and we were initially quite pleased with the accommodation at the Astra Village, in the small village of Koutouloufari, it is simple but adequate. However , on only our 2nd night we were burgled during the night while we were asleep, along with another apartment on the complex, and others in the village. The thieves took handbags and my husband's shorts leaving them by the swimming pool once they had extracted all the cash. They did not take cards or jewellery / cameras/ watches. They gained access via the patio door which we had left slightly open, so it is our own fault in a way , but then we found out that this has happened before and there is no warning from the management or Thomson Holidays . Indeed when we asked if we could move to a higher room we were told - why bother, they get in all the rooms!! We also asked the rep if we could change rooms to a higher one, which would have made us feel a bit better, but she was not willing to intervene on our behalf and did not wish to alarm the other guests. I feel that Thomson should put pressure on the apartment owners to improve security i.e- a security guard at night. We did not lose a vast amount of money, and are only too glad that we did not wake and disturb the burglars as who knows what may have happened. We will be far more security conscious in the future and more picky about where we stay.
This apart , Koutouloufari is a nice place to stay, with plenty of shops and tavernas. If we ever went back , which is doubtful , we would stay in different accommodation. Our favourite tavernas were Asotos in Koutouloufari and David Vegera in Piskopiano.

Had a lovely time at the Astra Village. We hired a scooter for 2 days to see some of the island and has a fab time.If you turn left when leaving the appartment out onto the little high st continue to walk straight ahead and you will come to a little gift shop that has some lovely displays.Directly opposite the gift shop is a bar that is higher up.Would recommend a few evening there as you can just watch this little town go about its business as the sun goes down .A MUST is Gallinis for food, geat staff and very attentive.Overall a very pleasant place to visit and would recomend it to all those looking for a gentle relaxing holiday free from the stresses and strains of shift work! Enjoy

We stayed at the Astra Village for 1 week in early September 2009. The Astra Village is set in the middle of Koutolufari, about 1km from Hersonissos, which has some beaches to visit. It's therefore away from the main crowds. But it certainly has a good atmosphere there with enough night life. For nightclubs you'd have to head into Hersonissos. Gallini is a good restaurant to go to. Fabrica is also a great place to pick up a crepe. The Astra Village itself does have a bar and they usually have a deal on for cocktails. The staff in the bar, particularly Alex make you feel welcome. There is also a supermarket across the road from the apartments and there's a larger Spar down the hill in Hersonissos.

The apartments are up to a good standard. The bathroom is small though. The kitchen has two electric hobs, a kettle, a toaster and a fridge. Some rooms have views of Hersonissos. The rooms are cleaned daily (our cleaner liked to organise our toiletries). The rooms have air con, which you have to pay 9 euros a daily. There is also a safe which costs 17 euros for the week.

We were also able to stay on a few extra hours as our flight was early the next morning, but they did charge us 20 euros for that.

The apartments do also have a couple of pools that can be used, although they're a bit on the small side.

nice clean but basic apartments, beware of early departure. We booked from 28/8 - 5/9/09. We were asked to depart at 10am on 4/9. we asked if we could keep apartment until departure time of 01.30 on 5/9. We were asked to pay a further 20 euro which we did we were then told we had to vacate at 1700 so 20E only covered from 10am-5pm. our flight wasnt until 04.40 am on 5/9. Some people had to vacate at 10 am 18 hours before their flight. I saw the travel company rep and explained we had booked until the 5th, however she agreed with the hotel, The hours we had no room we were allowed to leave our cases in reception unattended.
Most of the people on our flight complained of the time in advance we had to leave our accommodation but we were told the rooms were booked for others coming in.
Air conditioning is expensive and very noisy 9 euros per day. they tried to charge me for an extra day.
The village is lovely and there is a lovely patisserie also Petras is a lovely outdoor restaurant the chef is belgian.and the food and service are fab.
A trip on nemo the glass bottom boat is fantastic did that twice ! great fun.
Fab weather, nice views, shame about the attitude of the rep and the receptionist on the last day, early vacation of apartment totally ruined the week.
