My husband & I stayed here for 3 days last week and absolutely adored this place. It is a lot like camping, but in style. Arent & Mabel have a lovely place here with fruit trees, (we ate bananas every day) wonderful views, and cool architecture. Very nice people also. Would definitely reccomend this place to any adventurous couple or family!
Surrounded by mountains in the rainforest and pretty close to the Sulphur Springs you feel like there is nothing else in this world but pure nature. There is plenty of fruits growing in the garden and they use solar energy which makes it very sustainable.
The establishment is just beautiful and made with love into detail. The birdhouse is in harmony with nature since it is partly open but protects you from mosquitos and the like. You feel like you are sleeping outside but still have your privacy in a wonderful room with a comfy bed.
Arent and Mabel are lovely people who can help you with everything you need!

The Bird House is a beautiful wooden cottage on the property of La Bou. It has one big comfortable double bed and a toilet inside. The showers are outside in open air space. It is basically open air only covered with mosquitos nets that are very efficient! Not a single mosquito inside. And they provide also wonderful views of the whole garden and the real feel of nature. In the night you will hear the sounds of the forest. The owner, Arent is very helpful and caring. The whole garden has plenty fruit trees and you can taste those in season plus Arent or you alone can open a fresh coconut every day from palms growing right in the garden. If you want to cook you can do so in the BBQ area in the garden. The location is about 15 min walk from the bus stop in Soufriere. In the area closeby the cottage you can go hiking, the Waitukubuli trail is few min away, so are the hot sulphur springs of Soufriere. There is a coffee estate about 30 min hike from the cottage and I recommend you bisit the beach in Soufriere village right in front of the church called Bubble beach spa. You can swim there, wonderful snorkelling better than Champagne reef and soak in the warm baths.there is a massage available as well. All in all wonderful stay, relaxing environment, plenty of nature.

We found this place by chance on the hike to the Soufriere sulphur springs and moved in next day for couple of nights. We were amazed by the garden and the very special architecture of the house. The house was clean with very comfortable bed and we loved the fact it was surrounded by many windows only covered by mosquito nets so we could see outside to the garden and feel the nature by sight, by feel of wind and by the sounds.
Do not expect a 5 star hotel room with marmors, waiters and liftboys. Everything is genuinely made for the stay in a jungle paradise and is designed for the needs of a man in nature (not for spoiled tourists). With it goes that there is no hot shower (none is really needed when the tempreture exceeds 25 degrees even at night, and neither the water is colder then the 25 degrees). The shower is outside the main house near the terrace, it cannot be closed nor locked.
It was the perfect place to explore the south part of Dominica. We are quite extreme hikers and explored everything by foot, therefore it was a wonderful place for us. However, I do not recommend this lodge for people without a car that are not able to hike every day 20 mins to the village (bus) and back. The owner is, however, very generous and might be able to give you a ride from time to time. We went with him several times, he even took us to Rosseau when we needed.
We could easily have stayed longer and will definitely rent the house again when we return to Dominica. In comparison with other apartments and B&Bs in Dominica this was clearly the most wonderful spot we were at and it was cheaper then other alternatives (e.g. In Picard - near Portsmouth you end up with 90 USD a night with a comparable quality). The Bed and Breakfasts in Rosseau are much much worse for the same price.
The owner gave us fresh fruits from the garden.
You will definitely enjoy the barbeque place. There you can grill your steak or fish, drink a beer and enjoy the evening.
There is no kitchen (nor refrigirator) in the birdhouse, but there is one in the main house.
If you need anything special, ask the owners. They are very helpful.
It is near to the Champaigne reef. Do not miss the snorkelling, we saw plenty of fish and a turtle there just after 3 mins of snorkelling. Also an octopus and morays. Also the scotts head is good for snorkelling, but I would rather recommend diving scotts head than snorkelling.
The buses go very often from Soufriere to Rosseau and back and cost 4 ECD.
We wrote that the vacation is good for families with little children, but only if you can rent the main house as well (I guess you must ask the owner). Please take into account a worse (i.e. long) access to the place without a car. Also, at least 1/3 of the route to Soufriere is dirt road.
