“Best bet in 'Eua”
Reviewed March 5, 2012

Stayed at the Hideaway at the end of three weeks travelling through Tonga in January 2012. Eua is definitely worth a visit, and The Hideaway is far and away the best place to stay. Taki is excellent value and knows absolutely everything about the island, as it is his family's land. Recommend the Fangatave Beach walk, amazing views, caves etc. Also worth heading up the road for a kava session with the men in the next village. Accommodation is great value - you can pay three times as much for comparable accommodation elsewhere in Tonga. Nice one!

Kia ora,
We are a whanau of 6 from Aotearoa.( New Zealand)We had the pleasure of staying at the Hideaway, Eua for 5 nights December.2011, January 2012.
We learnt about hideaway by looking on the Eua accommodation website and thought it looked good.In fact, from the moment we arrived it was amazing!..The incredibly friendly and informative host picked us up in his truck from the airport and we immediately felt charmed by the beautiful ambience of Eua at dusk.
The family who host the hideaway are just delightful, they provided fun, clean accommodation( we had two rooms, each with their own bathrooms) and the cost was really affordable. We were able to use the kitchen to cook our own food. The communal area was really inviting, we enjoyed hanging out talking and eating and using internet.
The hideaway is built facing the coast and access to the sea is along a walkway, it takes less than a minute. The view is spectacular, although we were not in whale season, we had plenty to do! The water was warm and the coral beautiful.
While we were on Eua, Taki( the host) suggested lots of interesting activities for us to do; this included bike rides, walks and meeting locals. We were all so impressed with how friendly tTngan people are.
We also really enjoyed attending church both in Eua and on Tongatapu.
Our whole family would really recommend staying at the Hideaway!!!!

I had the pleasure of spending two full days and one night at the Hideaway and it was truly a wonderful experience for many reasons. The facilities are charming, although not swank, and you have everything you need including a warm shower. The picture postcard setting seals the deal, and I had a most relaxing afternoon reading and napping in the little pavillion out over the water. The delightful owners,Taki, Naite and their daughter (I think Fau), extended every courtesy and I enjoyed memorable and informative conversation with them. My day long hike through the rainforest was spectacular, and I also enjoyed weaving with a local woman in the nearest village. Alas, my time was up all too soon, but hopefully you won't make the same mistake and will stay longer.

I had a really enjoyable time at the Hideaway. The rooms are basic but clean and have all you really need. Taki and his family were friendly and helpful. The meals are great. Even though I was there in the whale watching off season, there was still lots to do and at very reasonable prices. It really is a lovely location and a great place to escape from the world for a while.

My girls (4 and 6) and I spent two weeks staying at Hideaway and we had a lovely time. It wasn't even the whale watching season and there was plenty to do with the beautiful walks, swimming etc. Their website doesn't really show the beautiful beaches that are on the island - one a five minute walk from hideaway through tropical bush. The beaches were picture perfect tropical beaches. The staff were sooo friendly and accommodating with meals and meal times. Hideaway is not fancy but it is clean and very charming. The island feels unexplored. One of the biggest factors for me was the help that was available through the guides. We did some walks and snorkeling that I would not have attempted with young kids if it wasn't for the trustworthiness and consideration of the guides.

We've stayed at the Hideaway for two nights and had a great time. Taki and his family are very helpful and take you to all the places you want, free of charge. The accommodation is basic and maybe needs some tender, love and care at some points but the location, the view and the service make more than up for that! Taki and his family make you feel very much at home and know a lot about the island. We highly recommend the Hideaway!

We saw a whale swim by while eating breakfast on our last morning - what an amazing treat to top off a wonderful few days! It was the very last whale of the season. We hadn't gone to Eua for the whale season, we had gone to do some research. Taki and his team (and especially our guide Jo and Taki's main righthand man, Sifu) were extremely helpful. They helped us to arrange the visits we needed for our research, ensured we were comfortable whilst back at the Hideaway, and encouraged us to have a rest and enjoy ourselves as well. They are all very knowledgeable about Eua and Tonga in general. The rooms are comfortable, the meals are great, and it is all affordable. We had a really great time! I have already begun to make plans to go back, this time with my husband for a holiday.

Room Tip: The rooms are all pretty much the same. The rooms overlooking the sea are probably the best for bre...
