If you want to get exceptionally good service and nice accommodation (for Tanzanian conditions) for reasonable price go for Tilapia at Mwanza. The hotel is clean, staff attending and there is a variety of different dishes int restaurant, including indian cuuries, african barbecue dishes, tasty sizzlers and even more -japanese teppaniyake! There is a little swimming-pool with exceptionally clean water and a fresh breeze from lake Victoria helps you forget you are in a quite big and busy city. Although it is located outside the town's centre- everything important is just a five-minute walk away. I spent there three enjoyable days and do not hesitate to recommend it to anybody who is looking for a non-pretentious yet comfortable accommodation. They do not have spa nor fitness center.

In July we stayed for one night in the Hotel Tilapia. It is not the best hotel in mwanza nowadays.
although the location is great, and the bedrooms are big, this is just a 3 star average hotel that is getting old and have seen many new hotels in mwanza like Malaika etc

The best thing about the Hotel Tilapia is the Teriyaki restaurant.

Areas of improvement
1. the rooms and the bedsheet are smelly.
2. very noisy especialy if you get rooms near the reception or main building.
3. buffet breakfast is the worst i have ever seen. I think best they dont put buffet breakfast and ask guest to order la carte but part of the room price.

next visit i will stay in malaika hotel.

Room Tip: rooms next the reception or kitchen are very noisy (ac unit and hotel staff noise)

I have stayed here 3 times over the last 4 years on my travels to Tanzania. The rooms are clean, the staff is friendly, and the open air restaurant provides and idyllic place to share a meal with friends, old and new.

We stayed here the first night of out Tanzania safari with Eastco. The room were adequate, food very good, friendly staff and overlooks the lake. What more could you ask for.We visited in September 2011 as part of our two week safari. Being next to the lake makes it nice for walks and makes for a nice general atmosphere.

Well at least not the real one. We had a great time here. The pool was inviting as you cannot swim in the lake. There are beautiful gardens to relax in. The staff were friendly and helpful. We stayed in the Katherine Hepburn Suite. Same price as the other rooms so we took this one and glad we did. It is a beautiful room on the boat with its own balcony. Very spacious and great views of the lake. I would stay there again.

Room Tip: If you like somethig different and charming try the Katherine Hepburn Suite on the boat.

The Tilapia is a large hotel situated in a nice location on Lake Victoria. The two times we stayed here, the hotel was teeming with people, which made it lively and a fun place to stay. The restaurant sits directly on the lake, and it serves decent food over a wide variety of cuisines. The rooms are nice, not great, and the rates are competitive. Service is awful, but there's not much need for it, as this place is far from trying to be a luxury hotel. Overall, this is a good choice for a brief stay in Mwanza.

Location would be one of the few positive aspects of Hotel Tilapia. It's set by Lake Victoria, and from the dining areas, you can enjoy the beautiful view. It is possible to walk to the town, which would take around 10mins at a comfortable pace.

On the other hand, we found the service to be rude and arrogant. For example, I had difficulty connecting to the wifi from our room and called reception for help. My response was "Try again" and the phone was then slammed down. After trying again, I made a second call which resulted in the same rude and unhelpful reply. Finally on the 3rd attempt, the staff finally sent some one up to room to assist.

Our room itself was spacious and clean, and mosquito nets were provided, but we were disappointed by the view that looked out onto the roofs and fences on which the hotel laundry was drying.

The restaurant was good for an Indian dinner however the buffet breakfast in the morning could have been given a miss.

I wouldn't stay here again. We actually found another hotel in Mwanza which was stunning, and much better value. I'd recommend the restaurant at Tilapia for dinner, but I'd suggest to look around carefully before choosing to stay at this hotel unless the service improves.
