Karibuni Lodge

The Karibuni Lodge is a great place to stay in Kitale, Kenya. It is a hidden oasis with wonderful homemade meals and a quiet garden for relaxing. The owners are great - Teresa and Abraham - and very accommodating. The showers have hot water, and there are group houses available. Animal lovers will also be happy to meet the four sweet cats and three dogs who call the Karibuni Lodge home. Can't recommend enough! Thanks! Wow! What a pleasure staying there! We arrived late in the evening, but the food was still ready and warm on the table for us. Such a pleasant welcome! We stayed there for a few days, and were completely free to do whatever we wanted. The rooms were exactly what you need, the breakfast is served on a beautiful veranda overlooking the hills, and the hosts make you feel like a kid again coming home to mum after a long day at school! Incredible. Hope to come again someday!

Provided you are not after touristic luxury this place is wow! It is quiet, comfortable, clean, well run and provides good food and ultra friendly advice. It provides a lovely mix of African and Western as the proprietor Theresa is English, married to Kenyan chef Ibrahim. If that that sounds contradictory don't worry it works really well. The Lodge is a short distance from the centre of Kitale in a previously colonial suburb. Accommodation has rustic charm and all you really need. Its a good jumping off point for Mount Elgon and other places. I've stayed there on my own and also with a visiting team. For them it was a great half way house as they journeyed from UK comfort before going on to stay with local hosts. Theresa is helpful kindness itself.

Karibuni Lodge is like staying with friends, Theresa and Ibrahim, with Elvis and the crew just make you comfortable in surroundings which allow real relaxation after a busy day working. Cancel dinner because of a late lunch - no bother - would you like a some bread and cheese, a sausage or two? Washing gets done quickly - a bit of a scrabble in the laundry basket to pick out your own - great fun. And the coffee is good, and you can buy it to bring home at a good price. There with a group who came and went at odd times - does it matter. Not at all. We have comfy beds in a tent in a bamboo and thatched hut with innovative approaches to sanitation and plumbing, but snug as bugs in rugs and but can get the luxury end in the house if you really need it. If I'm back in that neck of the woods, I won't even look for anywhere else.

As a group of clergy and teachers we spent different amounts of time at the lodge while travelling and working in Kenya. We stayed 1 night at the beginning of the visit and 2 at the end. The Lodge is the most relaxing place to stay and Theresa, Ibrahim and Elvis provide fantastic service - nothing is too much trouble. The food was great and sodas and coffee were always available. The vast grounds were a pleasure to walk around and the accomodation clean and comfortable. I hope to be back again

Just returned from a 19 day trip with colleagues to Kenya and I stayed for 5 nights then 2 nights at the Karibuni Lodge. Theresa, Ibrahim and Elvis gave us great service and the food was excellent. It was clean, safe and great value for money. I will be back I am sure.

We spent a week here and I can't recommend it highly enough. We were a group of teachers and students visiting schools in Kitale. It's not five star but it's quirky and the service from Theresa, Ibrahim and Elvis is second to none - they went out of their way to make sure that our (often complicated) transport needs were dealt with and they spent time getting to know us.

The grounds are filled with turkeys, guinea fowl, chickens, ducks, geese. We made friends with the pet cats and dogs. Most of us stayed in the "cottage" rooms each of which is unique and all of which show touches of genius in their design. Spent hours on the terrace gawping at the view/sun and moonrises and eating huge quantities of home cooked food.

Saw some of the other hotels in Kitale centre as well as the Kitale Club and wouldn't even consider using any of them in place of the Karibuni.

Didn't want to leave!
