“An idyllic family vacay”
Reviewed August 9, 2013

Was there with my wife and three kids (boy 8, girl 10, boy 12). Stayed the night before in Toronto, and it was an easy, less-than-two-hour drive from there. The weather wasn't great, but the kids didn't care . . . there are enough amenities to keep them occupied rain or shine: lake with canoes and kayaks, bikes, fishing, outdoor pool with hot-tub, indoor pool, game room (ping pong, etc.), basketball/squash courts, staff-run activities and more. The food was great - lots of variety for picky eaters and yummy menu choices for the grown-ups at dinner; a nice touch is your family gets the same table for each meal. I'll confess this was my first all-inclusive trip . . . and I'm sure there are hundreds of places like this in the U.S. and Canada . . . but this resort is really - for lack of a better word - sweet, well-run and the staff seem to want to be there. Only minor quibbles: spotty wifi in the room (much better in the lobby area, and who needs it when you're on this kind of vacation?) and understand that the day programs can't be spot-on for kids of all ages; meaning, my daughter loved the Jam Sandwich drama show one morning, but my sons - who can't imagine an earth without Minecraft (videogame) - would rather have been doing something else. We've already booked our trip there for next summer, if that's any indication of our feelings about the place.

Hi DanMP68,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review about your summer vacation at our resort. I am truly glad that your first summer vacation with us was a good one and that you are going to return this upcoming summer.

When you were talking about your kids and how one loved Jam Sandwich and the boys just wanted to play video games - you really summed up our Kids Camp challenges! I hope the Sports/Outdoors camp will be exciting for your boys next summer. It sounds like the Arts/Drama camp would be good for your daughter. You can tell your sons that we now have X-Box and Playstation Video consoles in our games room. I am not sure if this will make you happy but I think the boys will like it!

I wish you and your family a safe and happy New Year and we look forward to seeing you again this upcoming summer,

We had a wonderful experience in this cottage - although we had to cut it short due to power outrage and no water. Many thanks to Christie and her staff for making us comfortable in these odd conditions. Christie is an awesome manager - and so is Chris, the young by who took us on a boat ride!! Thanks to both of you.

My wife and I took a chance on this resort in October of 2011 when I picked up a Travel Jaunt coupon.
I try to get in a 3 to 4 day break in October just before the crazy Christmas rush so what I was looking for was a quiet, peaceful getaway on the water and out of the way.
And I totally got what I was looking for.
We were extremely fortunate with sunny weather and good temps for that time of year, and were able to do a walking tour, a lake boat ride, explored the trails, have a snooze on the beach, and just totally let go.
Our room had all the amenities required so that we could fend for ourselves for our breakfast and lunch, but dinner time was an absolute treat in their fine dining area overlooking the lake. The night time meals were fantastic. Lunches were soup in a cup from the lobby, which was just fine with me.
We like it so much, we extended our stay after the coupon stay another night, and went back in 2012.

Hi Mike C,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your resort experience from your October 2011 and October 2012 visits. When our guests extend their stay, we know that we are doing something right!

The fall is such a beautiful time of year here. Crisp sunny days that, as you know, are perfect for hiking, boating or relaxing on a Muskoka Chair on the beach. I am happy that the weather cooperated and you could experience these activities.

I hope that you schedule a return visit with us this year!

All the best and enjoy your summer,

Dianne.

Overall it is a nice place and we had a good time, however our stay was not excellent. We were there with two young kids.

Anything to do with food was a headache.

1. Dinner- while kids have a buffet dinner, adults order form a menu. The waiting time to get the meal we've ordered was VERY long, so of course kids had already finished their meals and grew quite restless, and we were still waiting for ours. When we mentioned this to the server, she just said they were understaffed and kitchen had some computer issues...... We would have been better off grabing something from the kids buffet and leaving. Dinner finally arrived, VERY late and not great quality and we had 2 restless kids on our hands. A nightmare.

2. Kids night snack- yes, they have cookies and milk before bed time for kids BUT, they don't tell you, so we didn't know untill out last night. Then on the last night, the kids snack was supposed to be served at 8, but wasn't ready, then not ready at 8:15, and so on. Staff just told me to came back later and again later....finally got it after 9:30. Also staff advised that they tend to run out quickly of cookies and milk, so I need to come at 8 (like I said, nothing was ready at 8). Besides, how hard is it to have enought cookies and have them on time?....again a nightmare.

So word of advice for future travelers- bring your own spare food and snacks. Do not trust the all inclusive, cause they may or may not serve you on time.

Check in desk -they are very slow. You will get a nice friendly service, but you will wait for it. Same with room being ready on time- ours wasn't ready at 3:30 as promised. The previous people did not even move out from that room by 3:30. Staff had no sense of urgency about it, like it was a normal occurance.

Boat rentals are very expensive, we paid 70$ plus tax for half a day, which is the most we ever paid for half a day rental in any of our getaways. Also, they placed a huge hold (I think about a $1000) on our credit card for the boat rental and lifted it several days after we have already returned the boat. So in fact once we have returned the boat, we couln't use our credit card for a good few more days, as the hold was still there. We called the bank and the bank advised that it is up to the vendor (Bayview) to lift the hold in a timely manner, which they didn't in our case.

Inflatables on the water- are placed far from the shore, in deep waters, effectively out of reach of young childern, who cannot enjoy them (but are asking all the time, since they see them). Unless you are comfortable letting your kids far into the deep water to reach the inflatables - you'll be just faced with having to say NO to your kids. There is no alternative for inflatables that is in shallow waters.

Kids programs- are nice but we had to go back and forth to look for them. They did not start at the locations that front desk told us. We had to walk back and forth with two kids, to find their meeting place, several times over, and then had the front desk tell us- "they are there"- when we just came from "there" and there was no one "there". Again a nightmare.

Finally, the board games- they don't have many options and for some that we tried- none had all the pieces- so again- bring your own.

Good points- nice lake, nice spacious rooms, friendly staff, all buffet meals are good.

Hello xxxxxoooooo,

Thank you for posting a review of your recent visit to our resort.

I see that overall you enjoyed your stay but had definite issues with the food service timing, check-in timing, location of water toys, price of boat rentals and kids programs communications.

We take comments such as yours seriously and I will be addressing them with my management team. We take pride in our customer service and never like to have our guests inconvenienced by waiting for a service for an extended period.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and thanks again for visiting our resort with your family this July.

Best regards,

Dianne.

The staff at this resort was very nice and very friendly, Christi at the check-in, Mariah at the restaurant, Kevin at the waterfront, everyone is wonderful and amazing! In the evening of Jun 1st, I asked for the direction to the indoor swimming pool, a very nice lady at the front desk went outside and showed me the direction; unfortunately I forgot to ask her name. Another nice lady at the check-out asked me if I would come back, for sure I will, not even mention others but just for one good reason - the excellent service at this resort, thanks everyone!

The food was excellent for dinner and buffet breakfast. Viewing the lake from the restaurant was wonderful.

We could see the lake from our window/balcony, nice view. Not enough time to try everything activity, we will be back and try...

Hi Ilovetravel18,

I am so glad that you enjoyed the staff at the resort. Thank you for mentioning their names in your review - it means a lot to them!

When you live and work at a resort you sometimes forget to look out the window and see what is around you. Your comments about the beautiful view of the lake from the dining room and your room balcony reminds me to take time to "enjoy the view".

Thanks for taking the time to post your review. Come back and visit - stay longer next time!

All the best and enjoy your summer,

Dianne.

Went there with family for a couple of nights. Beautiful resort, tucked in a nice corner on sparrow lake. Old, but well-maintained property with good amenities, clean indoor and outdoor pools, well-kept lawns. Good amenities like free kayaks. canoes and bikes. Had dinner on Sunday evening, but found the menu very limited - just 2 chicken items and 1 beef item on menu. There were some starters and good desert options. However, the menus could use more items...simple ones like sandwiches which the kitchen can easily put together. Overall a great place to go.

Hello Andy c,

Thank you for visiting our resort with your family this past June 2013.

Our resort is definitely old - we have been here since 1898! I am pleased that you found our facilities clean and well-maintained.

I hope you enjoyed the kayaks, canoes and bikes while you were here. We just added paddle boards this summer - they seem to be a "hit" with the guests.

Have a great summer and please come and visit us again.

Best regards,

Dianne.

While this property is showing some age, the rooms are very clean, and the beds are comfortable. I had a nice lakeview room with a nice balcony. I was here on a conference, and the conference facilities were okay but the chairs were very uncomfortable. The service here was great and the food was excellent! Very nice choices on the menu. I would like to take my kids here sometime!

Hi mjhoc,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your recent conference trip to our resort.

We are happy that you enjoyed the food, service and resort cleanliness. I have passed along your comment about the conference chairs to my management team for discussion.

We have lots of programs, entertainment and activities for children (and adults), especially during summer and school breaks year round. We would love to host you and your kids at the resort when you don't have meetings to attend.

Have a great summer,

Dianne.
