“Homestay in India”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

We have stayed few nights in this amazing colonial house. The hosts very very helpful and friendly, and have organized for us boat trip, sightseeing etc.The homemade meals were very delicious. True authentic feeling of India, after spending week in Kovalam and Varkala, which are more touristy.

We had been to this homestay after our marrige, fisrt home out after marriage. I had booked the homestay and houseboat package and a extra day at homestay follwing this. The owner Mr Babu and his wife both were very much hospitable. We had reached kottayam at morning however our check in was at afternoon only. As conveyed on phone earlier, we got a temporaty room to stay in until then, the cab driver was there at the station sharp to pick us to the homestay. The food was awesome, and we liked the food every time, we get a choice of telling them in advance our preferences. We stayed in two rooms, one upon arrival and another room as we came back from houseboat. Both the rooms were clean and tidy. There is power cut issues, however since it was Februay did nt bother us much. There is a swing outside at the back gate and a beach style swing, my wife was happy with both of these. She felt so homely that we even washed our clothes and dried it outside as we do in home.
The house boat was a unique and memorable experience too, this was a first time for us, there were two persons, one who drove the boat and another a cook, they greeted us with fruits and juice as we got in, the boat started sailing at 12 noon and about 1.30 stopped and anchored in the mid of the lake to have lunch, the food was good and particulary exciting to have luch with water all aound. We both got an oppurtunity to steer the boat too in the mid of the lake, nice experience.., we started back at 3.30 -4 and reached a village called Vichur, the boat was stationed here for the night. we took a normal row boat reached other side and visited a krishna temple here,
This night we spent in the boat itself, the AC was switched on for the night, it was very sultry otherwise, the interiors were ok, had a bed, ac, windows, and a tv. The Tv was not fuctional but it did nt matter at all as we wanted to spend time away from this in a natual environment. The attached bathroom and toiled was clean and tidy.
We had our dinner and both the driver and cook left (probably their house was some where nearby). We could see a lot of boats stationed near us, may be about 10-12 boats. Ours was a small one with one room and a hall like sit out space, there were big, bigger, huge boats, some double decker boats, some were too posh, 2,3,4 bedrooms boats, it was nice to see all of them.
We returned back to the homestay and spent one more day, got a drop back to the railway station. The owners of the homestay, cook, attenders all were so courteous and made our stay more plesant and meorable.

Room Tip: Please carry torch light if it is also a boatstay.

Owner Mr Babu is very friendly & helpful. The room was very small but clean & perfectly acceptable. The house & grounds are lovely & surrounded by canals. There is a verandah with seats & a swing & its lovely, quiet & peaceful out there. We had evening meals each evening & the cook Lal is excellent & nothing too much trouble. Excellent value & a great experience of real India.

Coconut Creek was a wonderful experience even though we were there just for a day. My daughter enjoyed the garden with a swing, hammock and a small bridge over the canal. The hosts were very gracious, friendly and courteous. The rooms were clean and neat and just the right size for us ( a family of 3). The food was the best and the land lady herself cooks most of the items. Since I was a vegetarian she had made a jack fruit dry fry and it was so thoughtful. The breakfast, lunch and dinner were authentic Kerala style food and we also enjoyed tea and snack outdoors.I requested for a Kerala style plantain fry and it was hot, crunchy and fresh. We also enjoyed coconut water right from the farm. I definitely recommend this for families, couples or individuals looking for an affordable, quiet, peaceful and homely atmosphere.

The setting is perfect for a backwater retreat. It looks like the owner built a new wing that has air conditioned rooms rooms that are small and cramped. This would have been OK if the A/C worked. It went out after an hour and we had to rely upon the ceiling fan. We paid extra for the A/C and it would have been nice if we would have receive a credit. The WiFi only worked in a few rooms. Everything else was find and we enjoyed both the dinner and breakfast.

Room Tip: There is no pool or fitness center

Huge property spread across 4 acres. Mr Babu the owner is a hands own owner and has mainained a spotless property. The property has lot of open space for kids with swings and hammock. the wooden swing in the verandah is the perfect place to enjoy one's morning cup of tea. Now for the best part, the food. We had all our meals at the home stay and everything cooked by Mrs Babu was lip smackingly delicious. Authentic homely kerela food, served with care. They even arranged for my taxi an houseboat trip which made our vacation a comfortable one.
