“Nice Location...Property...Ambience... Slow Food Service”
Reviewed January 17, 2013

Cocobay has a fantastic location with a beautiful view of the Vembanad Lake. We stayed there for 2 days and we enjoyed our stay all along, but the only regret was the slow food service at the Restaurant. The breakfast is a complimentary buffet and we had no issues. But, for the Lunch and Dinner the food service were pretty slow and it took nearly 45 minutes to an hour for them to serve foods. It is better you order well in advance for the next session, which will save you from the frustration. Apart from that it was wonderful stay, location, hospitality, ayurvedic center, and the rooms were very good. The property is not too big, but it is well maintained and clean. The rooms and other amenities were good, we need to go through the backwaters from the Car park to the resort and the staffs were very friendly in nature. I would be raring to go back once again when I plan to Kumarakom after a few years....

Room Tip: Very Serene atmosphere facing Vembanad Lake

We stayed here for 2 nights only with the family but this is a beautiful boutique resort the entry and exit to the resort is exceptionally good along the back waters. I would give the restaurant a 3 over 5, but I felt they always made an effort to please there customers. The property itself is not very big but is in a very scenic and beautiful location. I would gladly recommend this place to anyone visiting kumarkovam. Also they are slightly lighter on the wallet compared to other resorts in the vicinity.

We stayed at Cocobay for two nights, not sure if this one can be called a resort for the service was really poor.

Cocobay is nicely located facing Vembanad lake and the sight of houseboats passing by, sunrise and sunset are all very beautiful. Areawise, this is a very small resort with about 15-20 rooms that form three sides of a square shape and a pool plopped in the middle of it, 4th side being Vembanad lake.

Pros:
- Location
- Boat ride from parking lot to the resort, enjoyable
- Tiny boat jetty where our kids had fun feeding the fish
- Rustic look of the room
- We had no problem with hot water when we stayed

Cons:
- There was a really LOUD family that had booked almost one side of the resort (6-7 rooms) and they spoilt the ambience by bickering, quarreling or laughing loudly 24 hours and the management did nothing to stop it. Everyone was uncomfortable about this and complained, but not much effect on the management and nothing changed
- Service in the restaurant was horrible, for plates, glasses, water bottles - everyone had to wait a good half hour. This feedback was shared by everyone that was staying there
- Breakfast would always be set up half hour past their schedule published
- A la carte was the only choice for lunch and dinner and it took a good hour to hour and half for the order to arrive, sometimes wrong orders came out after all that
- Some bedsheets had mold in them, probably due to the damp weather - but should have been taken care of

We could not take advantage of the spa because we went too late for booking a slot.

Overall the attitude of management was careless and they did not make any efforts to please their customers. There were a couple of out-of-country families and they had a hard time explaining their orders to the waiters and always got wrong orders.

Room Tip: Rooms are all about the same .. probably the ones closer to the lake are nicer. We had one closer to...

Cocobay Resort has a fantastic location on the edge of Vemnabad Lake. The premises are well looked after and it looks like an inviting place to stay while you enjoy some Keralan sunshine.

However, our experience at the Resort was a real disappointment for one reason; the service. The hotel is woefully understaffed so if you want to get anything done or if you want to order anything from the (extremely limited) restaurant or bar, it takes so long to reach you that you've forgotten you ever ordered it by the time it gets to you! That, or it never reaches you at all or you receive something completely different to what you ordered. On one occasion, four dishes took an hour and a half to arrive for our lunch, and when they did emerge from the kitchens our plates sat on the side not being delivered to our table for another 5 minutes. We took to doing most things for ourselves; we brought the glasses from our rooms to lunch and dinner and we cleared our tables ourselves before sitting down. You can expect to wait half an hour for water or beer to arrive, and you may have to ask for it 3 times.

The alarm bells started ringing for me when, on arrival, one of the management walked past me and spat in a bush! Not particularly professional in a decent hotel. While we were having a discussion about our bill at the end of our stay and trying to get a discount on account of the bad service we had received, the staff member we were speaking to simply stopped talking to us, ignored our questions and spoke to somebody else! The attitude of the management during that discussion showed their complete disregard for customer service, and they refused to take anything but a tiny discount off our bill.

I've lived in India for two years and travelled quite widely. This is undoubtedly the worst service I have ever received in all that time. It's such a shame because the location is stunning. The management really needs a shake-up. I've written this review with some reluctance because I'm usually a pretty laid-back traveller, but I think it's important that others know what they're letting themselves in for before shelling out what is a pretty substantial amount of money.

Possibly the worst hotel experience ever – if you have booked, suggest you cancel and find another property.
Our stay was at the end of our Kerala holiday – which till we checked into Coco Bay Resort, had been by and large an excellent trip with good hotels and superb food. The resort has a unique way of getting to it which promised a lot – but that is when the troubles started.
The resort has a lot going for it – an excellent location and a nice swimming pool. However, the resort is beginning to look “tired” as if no money has being spent on renovation or upkeep for quite a while. The room was musty and smelly and could do with a coat of paint and varnish on the doors and windows. However, the sheets and towels were clean – but a word of warning – don’t use the blankets as they are dirty and smelly – which is ok as the air conditioning does not work after 11 pm!! – more on that later.
The resort has only ONE place where you eat – a rundown thatched hut where there is only a buffet for breakfast and dinner. Even though we were shown a menu when we wanted a snack before dinner, we were told that only buffet meals would be provided and we had no other choice!! So we ordered a cup of tea and chicken sandwiches which took 50 minutes to arrive – because we were told that there was only one cook on duty who was busy making dinner!!!
We were told that dinner would be served at 7:30 pm – when we got there at 8:15 they were still laying out the food – it only got worse from there – all the guests were kept waiting for a long time as they only brought out limited portions of food at a time with the result that one could not get a taste of all the dishes at one time as there were always empty serving dishes every time one went to the buffet – the same thing was repeated at breakfast the following morning.
We finally retired to bed and lo behold, had no air conditioning after 11 pm. I got up and went to look for someone to check what the problem was – only to be told that the fuse had tripped. This was repaired and the air conditioning came on for 10 minutes and went off again – sure enough this was repeated 3 times till I got tired and we went to sleep with just the fan on. The next morning when we complained we were told that we would be shifted to another room where we would not have the same problem – guess what – exactly the same thing happened in the second room – what we discovered that all the air conditioners worked on one line and the fuse kept tripping so another night with just the fan after 11 pm!!! Added to this was that on both nights there was no hot water!!!
The service is terrible – most of the staff barely understands any other language apart from Malayalam. Secondly, the property is severely understaffed and everyone is over worked so the service is really abysmal.
I strongly suggest that if you have booked a room at this resort – PLEASE CANCEL AND FIND SOMETHING ELSE – and if you are thinking of staying at this property – STAY AWAY!!!

The location of the resort is great, the place lacks hospitality. The service and food quality is poor. Looks like they are interested in foreign clients only. The bath tub is present but the stopper is removed. The tiles are slippery and one has to stand in the bath tub to take a bath and there is no mat outside the tub so one tends to slip. There were cobwebs on the couch put in the corridors. The restaurant service lacks professionalism and care. The documentation is poor and appointments for the massage were not taken properly. For checking out it took almost 2 hours despite telling in advance. The poor service was attributed to lack of manpower due to Christmas. Overall lovely place but poor management.

Room Tip: Room no 19 has very noisy AC avoid it.

The resort has nothing much to offer other than the view of the lake. The swimming pool is dirty. The restaurant serves limited number of dishes and the quality of the food is not good. The resort looks much more appealing in the photos.

Room Tip: Avoid this resort
