“Memorable Experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 27, 2011

Zuri Kumarakom is a new hotel (about 4 years old) and has the latest luxuries in an area where one usually goes for old world charm. As a result, it's the best of both worlds - a fantastic location on the banks of the largest freshwater lake in Asia (Lake Vembanad) with all the luxuries of a top-notch resort.

The hotel is on the backwaters of Kerala, a very popular tourist destination, and it takes about 2 hours to get there from the Kochi airport. Once there however, you enter another world - the resort is spread over a huge area, but doesn't necessarily have too many rooms... there is a large man-made lake in the center of the resort that ensures everything is spread out and you get plenty of space...

The rooms are large and all have balconys. We had 2 standard interconnecting rooms and were very comfortable. We also had an opportunity to see the private villas... which were in a word SUPERB. If on a honeymoon or other romantic vacation, that woudl be a perfect location - large villa with bedroom and separate living area... private pool overlooking Lake Vembanad with bushes surrounding the pool for absolute privacy. In between the standard rooms and private villas, the resort also has another set of cottages which are slightly smaller and on the banks of the interior man-made lake.

The resort will send across golf-buggy's for you if you need help getting around... but we loved walking around... the views are awesome and seeing the sun set over the lake from the swimming pool was ethereal.

The only downer was food choices - there is a multi-cuisine coffee shop/ buffet restaurant and a speciality seafood restaurant; so there is some limitation there, but that was just a minor point. With 3 young daughters (3 1/2, 2 and 1 years old) we were very happy with the multi-cuisine restaurant.

The staff was very helpful and attentive and we were impressed with the service all over the resort.

One other area which might be a reason to visit by itself is the spa - a huge facility next to the swimming pool with 25+ treatment rooms and a very wide range of treatments available. My wife and I availed a treatments for each of us and we were extremely happy.

Overall an excellent location and one I would definitely go back to.

We had a wonderful week at the Zuri in early February. To be honest the Zuri had a lot to live upto. We started our holiday in India at the Taj in Cochin where we given a free upgrade to a suite over looking the Vermbanad lake, From there we joined the MV Oberoi Vrinda, floating luxury, cruising the Vermbanad and its canals. So having been spoilt rotten during our 1st week in India it was the turn of the Zuri.

Our first impression was one of tranquility, even with people around there was a feeling of peace and calm.

We upgraded to a cottage by the lagoon when booking our holiday, This room was worth the extra cost. We love the bird-life - to sit out on our veranda and watch the Kingfisher's and Cormorants feet away from us in a tree right by our veranda was priceless,

Our fist week in India was very busy, so for us the relaxation of the holiday started at the Zuri, we didn't want loads to do, just watch the birds, use the lovely pool, have a place to read whilst sipping a beer or G&T, catch the sun, unwind....Don't get me wrong if you want outings etc it's all there, we just wanted to relax

When choosing this hotel over others in Kumarakom, the deciding factors were the veranda over the lagoon and the cigar bar. My husband enjoys a cigar with his pint (which isn't too easy in the UK with the smoking ban) so to have a cigar bar with choice of fine cigars was something he was really looking forward to, imagine his disappointment when there was just no choice of cigars.....to cut a long story short the hotel moved mountains to resolve this. The Zuri staff are the most helpful I have ever come across, they want you to be comfortable and happy and do go the extra mile to make this happen. If something isn't right you just need to tell them.

My husband does have a walking difficulty, which in a hot climate, and in a room a little way away from the main buildings can be problem. On one occasion the buggies were all out after a busy day, so we could not get back from the restaurant, Ian was in pain and I was getting frustrated, so I complained to reception, who were mortified, we got Ian back in a laundry vehicle in the end. The management went out of their way to apologize and offered an upgrade. "NO" said my husband, I'm not packing up my stuff now and move, besides I like the solitude of our room and the bird tree...the poor staff at the Zuri must have thought we were nuts!

We did accept the upgrade, the room offered was facing the lake, with a garden full of trees with birds in.....We weren't at all unhappy at the Zuri before this, we were having a wonderful time. but the new room, on the lake, with its own pool and closer to the restaurant was the icing on the cake and really made the holiday special

To be honest I can't wait to go back. We never go anywhere 2x, too many places still to visit, but the Zuri will be the exception. It's so relaxing and we don't get much of that at home. The staff did make the difference, they really couldn't do enough to help. If there was even the smallest thing wrong, you just to say and it was sorted

We want to thank the Zuri for a fantastic stay at their hotel. It's well run, clean, very comfortable ( a very justified 5 stars) the food is varied and very good, and the staff a credit to the Zuri name

We were delighted to have you staying with us at the end of February and thank you for posting such a positive review regarding the level of service that we offer here at the Zuri Kumarakom! We look forward to welcoming you back to Kerala next year and can ensure you we'll find you plenty of birds. We were upgraded to a deluxe bungalow suite each with its own infinity pool overlooking the lake, which were quite breathtaking and certainly the most luxurious accommodation we have ever experienced. It provided everything expected of a five star luxury hotel with superb facilities and attentive staff in an excellent waterside location if somewhat distant from the 'city bustle'. As might be expected the restaurant prices reflected the star rating and were London prices (Indian wine 35 dollars a bottle, modest French wine 50 dollars.) An enjoyable one day stopover. Recommended.

The overall experience has been great right from check-in till check-out.. The reception has everything made in the shape of houseboats and the way to welcome was quite refreshing with cool coconut water being served in a royal style (keeping in line with the overall theme of the place --- coconut lagoons surrounding the backwaters with houseboats)
The cottage was well spaced out and had a direct view of the lake. The bathroom had 3 separate areas - the bathtub, the shower panel and the open shower area. It was enough for any couple to relive their honeymoon days...
The location was excellent as it was situated right on the shore of Vembanad lake... A speed boat ride (either in the morning or evening) is a must to enjoy the flora and the fauna of the place... In terms of amenities, they should have had a games room as there is not much to do around in Kumarakom and one is expected to spend time in hotel itself...
The best was the spa... its just world class.. though the rates were very high but after experiencing the services one would vouch that its all reasonable... Also the swimming pool is pretty small and is a little misfit with the overall facilities of the hotel...
Food quality was good but the options were very limited for vegetarians...

On arrival Anshul and Shyam on Reception made us very welcome and we were given a chilled welcome drink as the weather was really hot. They were both very helpful, friendly, and professional and they should both be commended.

The rooms were spacious, clean and room service was excellent. The restaurant offered a lot of variety of food and all the staff throughout the hotel were very friendly. In the evening there was different entertainment on each night.

The hotel offered Yoga classes in the morning in the middle of a a man made lake. There was a Spa which offered different types of massages.

We had the pleasure to stay in the Presidential Suite for one night and the experience was out of this world. We had our own swimming pool overlook backwaters and the view of the sunset was magnificent.

We highly recommend this hotel and we would difinetly visit again.

When we drove into the hotel grounds, we could not believe what we were seeing. Amazing grounds and the a very impressive approach to the reception area. The reception are decor is amazing. The hotel grounds are clean and the landscaping is excellent. The rooms are very modern and very attractive and most importantly clean and well maintained. The grounds are quite spread out with excellent walkways. The staff is warm, friendly and effiecient. If this was not enough we were blown away by the quality and variety of food. I think I put on a few pounds in one evening there. After dinner we again went out for a walk and could not get over how beautiful the entire place was. I would highly recommend the hotel.

We were booked into this hotel by the Madras Anchorage Round Table. It formed part of our World 00 Tour.We arrived by coach and each person was welcomed into this beautiful resort. We were a mixed bunch of tourists from Africa,Europe,UK and India.
Our room was clean and tidy. The decor beautiful, the gardens lush and well maintained.Early morning yoga class overlooking the beautiful pond gave one the sense of Nirvana. The resonating AUM filled the air with a calmness that seem to spread over all the guests who stayed at this beautiful resort.
The food was delicious. The huge selection at breakfast left the guests open-mouthed for choice.
The evening calmness was broken by the beautiful sound music emanating from the amphitheatre. The beautiful aromatherapy of the Spa made one want to walk in just to imbibe the scents.
The staff were polite and ever so helpful.
This hotel will always be remembered as one of our Best ever hotels
