The location is beautiful & the resort is just on the bank of lake. We had a very nice time. The biggest attraction is the lake.

This boutique (homestay) hotel is perfectly placed on Vembanad Lake in a very quiet position with a perfect view of the sunset across the water from the verandah of the lakeside rooms. The rooms are moderately sized and families will like the additional 'children's room' at the rear of each bungalow. The price is good for this very expensive area at about 4000 rupees per night including breakfast and one other meal.

Unfortunately, the management though charming and very willing to assist you, is extremely inexperienced. We had to complain about : taxi from the airport (didn't arrive), lunch (staff asleep on the dining room tables), table tennis (table surrounded by piles of wood and furniture, cycles (only two and no woman's bike), food on first night (inadequate for two and not up to Keralan standards). These were all put right. Excellent meals were served to our room and the place was tidied. Even the staff started to use the badminton court!

I really hope this is sorted out because the place and staff have great potential but I cannot recommend it at the moment except for a single night stop over.

I would like to write a review on this resort, though I am wrinting it after six months of my stay I didnt forget the experience we had in this resort. This resort on the banks of Kumarakom lake is a beautiful place to stay and especially when you visit with your family. Well maintained. We stayed there for two days and it surely helps in calming your senses. The silence in and around the lake and the view of the houseboats passing by onthe lake is worth a watch. Overall we had good experience.

Our stay in Kumarakom was extremely pleasant, all thanks to the gracious hospitality and superb services provided by Mr. Salim Das and his professional staff of Illikkalam Lake Resort.

Kumarakom is one of those places on earth where you go to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Get away from cars, traffic, pollution, city congestion, and leave your worries behind, and feast your eyes on the ever-green trees and the vastness of this exotic lake resort. Just gazing at the blue lake while lying on a hammock and soaking up the sun, is therapeutic enough. It's no wonder that celebrities like Britney Spears will be spending New Years Eve in Kumarakom this year.

To experience Kumarakom's natural beauty, you could either book a pricey 5 star luxury room at one of the deluxe resorts (and pay a hefty sum) or you could go easy on your wallet, and book a cottage at the Illikkalam Lake Resort. People come to Illikkalam Lake Resort, not for the luxury or the entourage, but to be one with nature. They come here to find peace and quiet.

In the morning, they offer YOGA CLASSES, where by a certified yogi comes at 7am and offers Beginners and Advanced classes. This traditional meditative practice is something that has beenpassed down since the Indus Valley Civilization (3000 BC). I've never done yoga before, so our Yogi (our Guru) explained the origins of yoga, and how it helps the human body stay fit (both physically and mentally) and protect itself from unwanted deceases. The session lasted for 2 hours, and composed of a variety of stretches, positions, and breathing exercises, after which we felt rejuvenated and ready to tackle the day.

Morning breakfast can be chosen from a wide variety of menu items (all traditional Kerala home-cooked food) .. I recommend the "appam and erichi (chicken) curry". Appam is a fermented flat bread made out of Rice and Coconut - dip that in the chicken curry, and you have a meal that tastes AMAZING! All your senses get heightened, and you'll get to experience one of the true tastes of Kerala.

During the day, you could explore their organic garden, as well as their wild duck and rabbit farm. They have baby rabbits which you could pet. You can ask a hammock to be tied in front of your cottage between two trees. There you can lie and enjoy the calm breeze, and the therapeutic view of the vast lake. You can also ask one of the staff members to bring you some tender coconut water (which you could sip through a straw from the coconut itself). Or if you're feeling a little more adventurous, ask for some "toddy" (fresh and sweet alcoholic beverage taken straight from the coconut).

In the afternoon, Illikkalam Lake Resort can arrange for a tour on the lake on a house-boat. This is something that can't be described in words, and must be experienced first hand. The Kerala House-boats are huge, slow-moving, exotic barges used for leisure trips. In earlier times, these were used to carry rice and spices from Kuttanad to the Kochi port. These houseboats are about 60 to 70 feet (about 18 to 21 meters) long and about 15 feet (about 5 m) wide at the middle. The hull is made of wooden planks that are held together by ropes of coconut fiber. The roof is made of bamboo poles and palm leaves. In the houseboat they we went, they had fully-fitted bedrooms, with a dining room, as well as a kitchen with our own personal chef, who would cook us fresh fried lobsters, shrimps, as well as "karimeen pollichathu" (this is another delicacy that you must try - it's a A fish, which is available in the back waters of Kerala, and is baked in a very traditional Kerala way with traditional exotic Kerala spices).

In the evening time, the resort can arrange an Ayurvedic massage which is a deeply penetrating, full-body oil massage for those who have tense muscle aches. One session of this, and you'll feel completely rejuvenated.

Our 5 day stay at Illikkalam Lake Resort was one of the best and most relaxing of all leisure destinations I've ever been to (beats Cancun, Hawaii, Maldives, Phuket any day). It was also easy on the wallet - as I felt that I didn't have to spend that much to get some peace and quiet, while being surrounded by the beauty of nature. I recommend Illikkalam Lake Resort without hesitation!

First of all, this is not really a resort. Its a group of cottages facing the lake. No doubt, they are quite close to the lake, about 30 feet away. We were two couples and booked two lake facing cottages. We came from a houseboat and arrived at 10 am, were told we need to wait till 12. Then the shock, we were told that one cottage was not lake facing but lake view - you can see the lake from the side in the distance from the sit out. We were really irritated - one was cottage 5 and the other cottage 12 and they were quite far apart. We had specified clearly we wanted lake facing cottages and next to each other.

The reason why i say it is not a resort is because there is nothing to do there - no gym, pool, etc. So, if you are happy to sit on the chairs in the sit out outside the cottage, watch the lake and then relax all the time, its fine. It also found it quite stiffling because the place is quite small and not much place to even take a leisurely walk.

Then there was no hot water in the rooms. In the morning, the hot water didnt come, it took one hour for them to finally send to buckets and it delayed our departure by an hour, thereby messing up our plans.

The boating thing didnt work out well either. They said you need to take like a half day boating trip for it to be worthwhile. You are kind of stuck in the middle of nowhere and so, theres no opportunity to go anywhere else.

The food though was very good - they had one cook and lots of kerala food and he cooked it well. we enjoyed the kerala food. no restaurant - you get served at your sit out or there is a kind of a dining hall with a thatched room and open sides (allowing you to get bitted by mosquitoes.

There were two boys there and the cook. The two boys were quite helpful and friendly. We got off to a bad start with the booking mix up and relations took a while to cool.

Overall, if you just want a cheap place to chill by the lake, this is it. It you want to enjoy a full fledged resort or you have kids restless to do something, this isnt the place.

On July i reached to kerala with my friends for celibrating our summer vocation from pune. we stayed 2 nights & 3 days in illikkalam lake resort. That was extreamly new experiance of us. we got lake facing cottages. so that we could enjoy the beauty of like & the beauty of lake at night. In this resort, have a beautiful organic fam & have a walker's path for relaxation. And the all staff of this resorts are so frendly. As per the requirements, they will arrange boating, entertainment things such as table tennis, badminton, chess, charoms and so on. So, simply i can say, everything was so good & it will be so comfort to others.

We planned to stay for two days and cut it short by a day. I have stayed in better restorts at better prices. The management was arrogant. The resort is out of town and the road to get there is real bad. The rooms are dingy and bathrooms are clean but ugly.

There is no beach. We can see the lake and not play in it.
