Tharavadu looks good from the outside but the problem is what lies inside. The challenges that we faced were multi faceted and I would try to summarize each one of them.
a. They try to sell you servant quarters as non AC annexe rooms and that is how we got trapped. The rooms are so bad that anybody with some moral fiber won't even put them out for rent but probably that was too much to expect from tharavadu. And I am not even going to delve on the room furnishings which are worse than pathetic.
b. Food quality at their kitchen is pathetic. They served uncooked or overcooked food and that too with a delay. When told about the undercooked raw meat the response was that you should go talk to the owner. Food can be a major issue as there are no good restaraunts nearby to add to the pathetic service that these people provide.
c. The staff is unresponsive a lot of times and it was a challenge to get them to provide basic amenities properly. Cleanliness of linen was an issue and the bathroom taps and pot were not working as they should.
d. There was only one switch to plug in a mosquito repellant. Hence you can either watch television or get rid of the mosquitoes.
e. Finally at the price they ask for accommodations I know for sure that there are better things that are on offer.

The customer stayed in the non AC standard room in the annex, not in our main block. The room rent is only 950/- and the room is having attached bathroom with hot water, European closet, clean and tidy room and bathroom, TV with cable, and a small balcony. We think these facilities are very appropriate for this price.

When you are complaining about the room, please think about the price also. It is not like a servant room and we welcome you to see the rooms.

I got a TV with a broken remote, when complained about the same, the person on the reception simply banged the phone. Afterwards they replaced a TV which was of a size of a TABLET!!!. Also you need to order your meals an HOUR!!!! before. Will not recommend this hotel to any one. Please do not go by the reviews from the net. Please think twice before coming to this hotel.
------ An irritated traveler.

But the maintenance and the service are terrible. The owners have a bureaucratic attitude and the adjacent temple stays open during part of the night playing a very loud music. Cleanliness left much to be desired. The village, along a very busy road, is not nice.

Room Tip: The rooms are small and there is no way to avoid the music of the temple

We stayed here for 2 nights so we could be near the Bird sanctuary. Dinner and Lunch were served to us on our balcony, which over looked the Tropical garden the food was very good.
Breakfast served with choice of your balcony or the restaurant which over looked the canal and the school.
The room was large, clean and good Value.
Locals very friendly particularly when we got a little lost and ended up at someone's back door! they laughed and redireded us.

Room Tip: AC is available. wifi also but in the office only.

This property is more than 100 years, it looks nice from outside and the rooms are also ok. we have to order our food atleast one hour before. We did ordered the food and told them that we would like to have our lunch at 1.00pm, even after 1-30 the food was not ready, and the food was not very good for the wait. We told that we would like to have our breakfast around 8-00am and told our preferences the previous day itself. When we went for breakfast, the food was still not ready, i ordered puttu with kadalaicurry as i wanted to try Kerala food. Puttu came at 8-30 sans kadalai curry. They asked me to eat with steamed banana and sugar. If you want to stay at this property, look out for a decent restaurant for your food requirements.

At first, very nice place but you have to know that the road is very near to it and that there is a temple right next to the hotel. That means (as the owner confirmed) a temple opening every morning at 4.30 with very loud music, singing and other instruments until 9am, when you were meant to wake up. On a saturday night, added to temple's music, people getting a drink at the alcohol shop on the opposite road and, in general, some others wandering around the place. Not v. confident in letting the room open at any time. Beds hard like hell but, after 1h after ordering, the food was good. Count 1h to Allepey.

Staff was very responsive and helpful to our needs (i.e., arranging taxis, recommending time of day for bird watching, ordering dinner and breakfast, etc). We had a great open air balance on the back of our room (ground floor) which is where we spent all our time. Very relaxing, shaded (so not too hot), and charming. Very nice place overall, good rooms and great service.

Room Tip: I asked to see a different room (with a different bed layout) and the front desk guy offered me an o...
